Brakes Failed Problems of Chevrolet S10

I was involved in a traffic collision in which my brakes failed to stop my vehicle. When I pressed the brakes during a sudden stop, the brakes started to slow down my truck but then the pedal went all the way down to the floor with a rubbing noise and my truck kept traveling until I hit the vehicle in front of me.

Total sudden brake failure I had to leave the road to avoid other cars. 40mph front right steal line failed and right rear line failed at the same time lines are rusty but the rest of the truck is ok there was no warning signs ( like drips or low level in the booster).

The contact had the brakes repaired by an independent mechanic and was advised that the failure was due to crystallization of the brakes. The contact stated that the brakes failed five times. The current mileage was 135,574 and the failure mileage was 80,000.

After dealer replaced switch for abs recall 99 v 193 000. Anti lock brakes failed to operate while driving.

During normal driving conditions brakes routinely fail when applying brakes while going over any kind of bumps. Brakes eventually come back on as long as I continue to apply pressure to the pedal. Initially thought my foot had slipped off of the pedal slightly and deployed anti-lock brakes, however, after 5 times this does not seem to be the case. I have read the consumer complaints section of this site and this appears to be a common problem on s-10 trucks.

Brakes failed to stop my truck on exit ramp in stop and go traffic. Had to pump brakes to stop truck . Didnt think much about it until truck started pulsating during normal braking; 13000 miles on truck . Only when antifreeze was leaking from engine could I leave it with a dealer. I told them the brakes failed once and they ;brakes are not working properly . This truck has 5 year 100,000 mile exstended waranty that I payed for. Iam not a mech, but I have worked on cars for twenty years . The dealer said under normal wear the truck needs a brake job on front 250 dollars ,15000miles highway driving. I dont care about the brakes ,because I can repair them my self . Iam only concerned about brakes failing again .

Abs motor comes on during normal driving and normal braking resulting in partial brake failure. Brake pedal gets hard (cannot be pressed down) or soft (goes to the floor).

Today (11/21/00) was the third time I've experienced brake failure due to problems with the anti lock braking system in my 1996 Chevrolet S10 pickup. During certain, specific situations, the abs will "decide" not to apply the brakes, allowing the vehicle to continue to roll forwards. The road conditions under which this occurs are as follows: 1) slow speed; generally less than 10 mph. 2) wet, slick pavement that abruptly changes to dry pavement and then back to wet pavement. In these situations, the abs can be heard and felt cycling but no stopping power is available. The only way to stop the vehicle in this situation in a "reasonable" distance is to apply the parking brake and "lock up" the rear wheels. The first two occurrences, which did not result in an accident, took place approximately 1 1/2 years ago while the vehicle was under warranty. The S10 was taken to a Chevrolet dealer (groth brothers, livermore, CA 94550) who checked the abs system and said there was no problem. The third occurrence happened on 11/21/00 and resulted in me rear-ending a vehicle stopped at a stop light. --I approached the red light at which a vehicle was stopped. I was traveling less than 10 mph and the road was wet but I had plenty of room to stop (or so I thought); at least 50 feet! as I applied the brakes for a leisurely stop (didn't pump them, just an even, steady firm pressure), I could feel the abs system begin to cycle. At this point, no stopping power was available at all and I rolled into the car ahead of me at the red light. Because of the slow speed, no damage was incurred. Before you chock this up to operator error or a driver (me) who does not understand abs, consider this; I have had much practical use and experience with abs systems. Besides having an engineering degree and being fairly adept at operating a variety of equipment (cars, tractors, motorcycles, boats and airplanes), I am a pilot for a major us airline and operate aircraft equipped with abs s.

While driving about any mph could step on brakes pedal and the pedal will go to the floor, and vehicle will not stop. This brakes pedal failure caused shakes, jerks the truck to the left and one accident.

Brakes were applied when other vehicle suddenly cut in front of driver and then abruptly applied brakes. Brakes failed to respond. Driver swerved to avoid rear end collision. Vehicle began to skid, striking a concrete pole. At no time did the brakes ever stop the vehicle. The vehicle only stopped after striking the concrete pole.

While driving on a dirt road and attempting to stop brakes failed, causing consumer to go into a ditch.

During a panic stop at 5-10 mph brakes failed to stop. Twice the pickup was taken to the shop for repair and nothing was found. This only occurs during a panic stop.

Whenever vehicle runs over a manhole cover in a down incline it causes brake failure, vehicle would continue on into the intersection before stopping. This condition could lead to a vehicle collision if not corrected.

Abs/brakes have failed many times. Rear brakes lock up severely causing loss of control. This has occurred numerous times and is extremely dangerous. Have seen many similar failures at your web site. Please do something.

When ever the brakes are applied, the vehicle would go into a slide. Stopping distance is extended due to sliding. Have been to dealer 3 times for brake failue. Mechanic informed owner its an abs braking system that has worn. Had to replace the entire abs braking system.

Brakes fail on left turns. Left turns into parking spaces. Left turn while braking. Brakes go to the floor and the stopping distance is extended. This happens more often if the ground is wet or smooth surface. This also happend when trying to avoid head-on tc with person who ran red light. This was also a move to the left. I have taken this vehicle into the service department several times. Dealer cannot re-create the problem. It occurs when you don't expect it. Very dangerous.

When the abs activates the pedal falls to the floor and the brakes fail. This happens on regular road conditions. Vehicle taken to dealer (3) times, problem still exists.

When applying the abs brakes in normal conditions, the pedal goes to the floor and the brakes fail to stop the vehicle.

Abs brakes, upon applying the brakes vewhicle pulls to the right going in a straight line; on three occasions the brakes failed, almost causing accidents.

Brakes are failing when I stop it won't stop sometimes.
