14 problems related to brake disc rotor have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The contact states that he received a recall letter concerning the anti lock brakes. He took the vehicle to a dealer. While performing the recall repairs the dealer noted there was a problem with the front rotors. The dealer determined the rotors was made of poor quality material andwas not receiving sufficient support and wear from the pads. The dealer completed the recall repair, however the rotor problem has not been corrected at this time.
Took truck to have brakes done on all four wheels. (could not stop but was able to steer around trouble, was reason for doing this) rear brakes and pads had to be replaced, they could not cut the rotors due to rust. I have never seen this condition in forty five years of working on cars or trucks, the rust ate away the pads to 1/3 their size. This condition should not have happened. I can see changing rotors because of heat or metal on metal, not from rust. I have the parts that have been replaced. The front rotors and pads did not need to be replaced. This happened in less than 5,000 miles as I had a new york emissions and safety inspection and it passed both.
1999 Chevrolet Silverado developed braking problems. The consumer had difficulty stopping the vehicle without excessive pedal pressure, shaking, chattering, growling and other miscellaneous strange noises. The consumer was informed the rear rotors needed to be replaced because of corrosion and delamination.
While braking all four brake rotors caused vehicle to pulsate. Dealerships was notified, but was unable to resolve the problem.
While braking, the rotors would make a loud grinding noise. The brakes pulled to the side and stopping distance was increased. All the rotors were defective, there were pieces missing and rust pockets on the rotors.
The consumer stated the brake rotors experienced premature wear. When the brakes were applied, the vehicle experienced extended stopping distance and there was a heavy vibration. Four rotors were replaced along with the brake pads. Gm did not offer any assistance.
Brakes working improperly causing damage to rotors. Brake pads not worn, but rotors chewed up and peeling apart. Inside surface of front rotors flaked and scaled off in large sections. 1999 Chevrolet Silverado with 44,900 mileage. After new rotors caliper and brake pads installed, brakes begin grabbing and vibrating. Took truck to dealer who did additional resurfacing of new front rotors, removed and replaced front wheel sensor. Mechanics revealed that there have been many other owners with brake problems on these vehicles, but gm has done nothing as yet.
Consumer stated that while driving at any speed and without warning the front and rear brake rotors are worn causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified. Ts emergency brake clip and front rotors and pads were replaced.
While driving at any speed and without warning front and rear brake rotors wore out, causing extended stopping distance. Dealer notified. Ts. . .
The lining of the rear brake rotors flaked off the rotor. In talking with the mechanics concerning this incident I have been advised that they replace a significant number of rear brake rotors on Chevrolet Silveradosdue to this same complaint. These rotors had to be replaced while the front rotors are still original equipment. This situation caused the vehicle to shudder violently when braking at highway speeds. Causing a feeling of no control on the vehicle. The entire vehicle would shudder.
Purchased car, 10/06/2000. Upon braking over bumpy road, brakes seemed to slip, and made a thumping sound. Dealer said front brake rotors were out of round. The rotors had just been replaced, and they refaced both front brake rotors. On, 11/01/2001, after a car wash, the abs motor ran non-stop after the car was turned off. Dealer "tested" abs system, advised pump motor had "failed" and replaced it, at a cost of $979. 04. On March 20,2001, the abs light came on when I was leaving work. Dealer advised that the part they had replaced in Nov,2001, had "failed" and they would replace free of charge. They called to say when they did replace it, it shorted out, and now we needed a "modulator" at a cost of $600. 00 plus labor. I believe that this is a serios safety issue with these trucks and I know that many of them have had the entire abs systems replaced. If chevy knows the location of the abs is a problem, why hasn't it been corrected? and repairs relating to a design flaw should definitely not be the consumers burden.
Corrosion on both front brake rotors causes excessive wear on all four disc brakes. Dealer was notified, and informed consumer that was a normal condition. Feel free to provide any further information on this matter.
The consumer stated the brakes failed at low speed, less than 20 mph. This was an intermittent problem. The vehicle had been taken to the dealership, the first time they said it was due to rust on the rotors. They replaced the rotors, but that did not fix the problem. The bearing hub assembly was replaced, the problem ceased for about a year. The bearing hub assembly hwas been replaced three times. The problem recurred. There was no accident.
Back brake rotors are worn out. Contacted dealer, and dealer said it was regular wear and tear. Grinding noise occurred when problem first started. The dealer recommended heavy duty brake rotors.
