23 problems related to brakes failed have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I drove my truck earlier in the morning, to run an errand. I returned home, and after about an hour I headed back out. As I was backing out of my driveway, I noticed the brake pedal felt soft. I drove down one house and applied the brake again, and the pedal went to the floor. Upon returning to the house, I observed a puddle in the driveway, and upon investigation under the truck, saw fluid had been leaking from corroded lines under the drivers side of the cab. I took my wife's vehicle to work and did some research. I found that this has happened quite a bit to Silverado owners. I had the vehicle towed to a local mechanic and am waiting to hear what the bill is going to run. Regardless of what the bill runs, I am thankful there were no kids running around in the neighborhood, as it was a school day, and that I was not on I-95 when the brakes failed. This could have ended much worse. The fact that the truck is paid off is only going to keep me from buying a new vehicle, (I'm thinking Ford?) for so long if the issues keep up.
I was pulling into a parking place and as I stepped on the brake pedal it moved up and down real fast and it got real hard. The brakes failed to stop. I hit the car. The same exact thing happened to my wife and she hit a handicap sign. I contacted Chevrolet and was told that my truck is not in the recall. The recall described the exact problem that our truck is having.
Contact stated: 2nd time the brakes failed on this vehicle. During second incident an accident occurred on 4/6/2005, contact was going about 35-40 mph, there was another vehicle in the lane, stopped, and another vehicle stalled in the same lane. Contact slammed on the brakes, and the brakes failed.
Steering wheel and brakes failed while driving. Driver drove vehicle home. Then, driver contacted a mechanic for an appointment.
The caller said this vehicle is not included in the NHTSA recall 05v379000 concerning anti lock brakes. The vehicle experienced the same problems as mentioned in the recall. The dealer and manufacturer said her residence was not included in the recall at this time. Caller stated she hit garage door as a result of brake failure. The abs brakes activated while parking or stopping at a stop sign. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop but they were unable to duplicate the problem. An accident occurred when the abs brake did not activate as they should when on an icy driveway. As a result the vehicle hit the consumer's garage door.
Anti-lock brakes engaging at low speeds on dry pavement causing brakes to fail and vehicle to continue moving. After several near misses of other cars and buildings, the fuse has been removed to disable the system.
My '99 Silverado had the brake failure problem (anti-lock brakes not working at very low speeds) that I see is now being investigated. I took it to the chevy dealer, and was told it was a common problem. I was required to pay to have it fixed. I suspect this was never reported by gm.
: the contact stated while driving 25 mph a noise was heard coming from under the vehicle. The dealership determined the antilock brake system had failed and needed to be disconnected. A local independent repair shop disconnected the antilock brake system. Updated 5/10/2006 -.
Anti- lock brakes failed during a sudden stop and the brakes locked up causing a skid. After the failure something (a pump) kept running and would not stop until the control module was unplugged.
While braking pedal went to the floor, then the brakes failed due to corrosion. Dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem.
Intermittent brake failure at low speeds, brake pedal on dry pavement stiff non-responsive mashed pedal no brake response struck pedestrian dealer finds no problems changed brake fluid no change don't know what else to do.
The brakes failed while coming to a stop causing an accident.
Brake failure. Abs activated on my 1999 Silverado pickup and truck would not stop and rolled into traffic lane from gas station. This has happened a number of times, necessitating pulling of the abs fuse in engine compartment thus rendering abs inoperative. Had wheel hub bearing unit replaced at a cost of $377. 00 and the day after the abs activated again and vehicle would not stop. Pulled fuse again and have not replaced. Checked around the country in NY and ok. , and had sons check with dealers and they asked why do you want to know if a problem. Dealer here says not a problem but I feel it should be looked into before maybe more people have problem and are killed.
The antilock brake controller failed. I talked to the dealer here in tupelo, and he said that it was out of warranty and they would not fix it unless I paid. I checked on the cost and they said that it would cost around 950. 00 but would be about a month because they only had a couple of the units that would fit my truck and they were keeping them on hand for warranty calls. I asked them why the long delay and they said they were going out quite often. I called gm customer service to inquire and was told they were unaware of any problems with the antilock systems on my year of truck. That did not seem to be the same information I received from the dealer, so I called 7 more dealers in the surrounding area and talked to the service departments. All I had to do was say that I was having problems with my antilock brakes and they said "OH is the pump running all the time?" they said that was a very common problem and they had to replace them all the time. I then thought that I would see if I could locate a used one in a salvage yard and replace the controller my self. . . I called numerous salvage yards and found quite a few of 1999 Silverado's but all of them had already had the controller removed. I then called gm back and told them of what I had found out, they were very nice but in effect told me "tough" so I thought I would write to you and file my complaint and see if you have had any others.
Antitlock brakes failure, module went out on three different vehicles at 40,000 miles.
At normal braking procedures brakes will intermittently fail, causing longer stopping distance. Dealer cannot determine cause of defect. The brake failure occured three times.
The brakes failed at 30mph and I almost hit someone the abs went out on me, and I had no brakes for about 1 minute. The pedal was hard and the truck would not stop. Dealer has it now replacing a abs part.
Brakes failed to stop vehicle when traveling over bumpy roads coming to a stop dealer can't find the problem on three trips for service, I can duplicate the problem almost at will, why can't the dealer.
When pressing brake pedal on uneven or bumpy roads, brakes fail, causing extended stopping distance.
The 1999 Chevrolet truck ex silv antilock breaks have been failing at random times since April 1 1999. First at slow speeds and then at high speeds randomly. On 720-1999 my speed was 60 mi hr and the brakes failed when a deer crossed the state highway between graham TX and breckenridge TX. The brakes delayed and I hit the deer dead center of my bumper and grill! the air bags didnot inflate ever!.
Brakes fail to work properly when pressed. Stopping distance for vehicle was increased. Can feel vehicle slowing down, but not stopping right away. Took to dealer, and mechanic indicated that brakes were operable.
Intermittently brake failure. Dealer has attempted to fix defect 4 times, but defect reoccurred and couldn't determine cause. Also, a clunk in the front end indicta a loose part in the suspension or engine . Dealer has attempted to fix defect 6 times, but couldn't determine cause.
The brakes failed and caused an accident.
