Chevrolet Silverado owners have reported 4 problems related to back up lights (under the exterior lighting category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Affects all current Chevrolet vehicles currently sold into the USA. Chevrolet has begun using the backup lamps (reverse lights) to illuminate the area around the vehicle even when the vehicle is off and not in reverse gear; typically when the driver is accessing & egressing the vehicle, or has actuated the door lock remote. The result is a vehicle appears to be reversing, or about to reverse, even though it's not capable of movement. Approaching vehicles assume the Chevrolet is about to move, yet are unable to verify the driver can see them and so can't proceed without escalating impact risk; those who do pass will focus attention on the potential movement of the Chevrolet rather than scanning for general pedestrian traffic. In addition, use of backup lights in this manner can teach children to disregard backup lights as a potential movement indicator, and increases their chances of runover by walking behind a vehicle that is truly in reverse and about to move. According to fmvss 108 the use of backup lamps shall comply with applicable sae standards such sae j387 apr2014 3. 4. 1 backup function a lighting device used to provide illumination behind the vehicle and to provide a warning signal to pedestrians and other drivers when the vehicle is backing up (reversing) or is about to back up. 3. 4. 2 backup lamp(s) (reversing) lamp or lamps providing the backup function; more commonly referred to as a “reversing lamp” in ece regulations. (also listed as a road illumination device).

Parking brake sticks: I bought vehicle August 2000. Was called to active duty and deployed with military for 1 year beginning January 2003. Yes, that's less than the 3 year warranty. My wife used the vehicle occasionally and I have 31,000 miles on the truck and upon returning, the parking brake sticks. I have burnt out 2 sets or rear pads and rotors. Additionally, the slow and intermittent portion of the windshield wiper stopped working and the reverse/backup lights don't work. I contacted the dealer and gm and they both told me "too bad. ".

This is not the first problem with this truck, the air conditioning blower motor went out. The third brake light was not tightened, and caused water to run down the back window.
