I have a 2010 Chevrolet 1500 pickup truck and after returning from lunch noticed the spare tire hanging loosely on the underside of the truck bed. After trying to use the jack handle to tighten it back up which failed I lowered the tire via the jack handle and proceeded to view the hoist. The hoist is held up by a single bolt to the undercarriage. I removed the bolt and found that the metal surrounding the bolt had several stress cracks and 2 new fractures. I removed the unit and have it currently. I called a dealer and asked if they had any issues with the hoist and they said they had not but a couple of people had lost their spare tires. I took the unit to the dealer and they said no bulletins were out on this issue and could not help me. I think gm has a safety issue with this part (25974843) as it was replaced in 2013 with 20870067. If this bracket fractures completely the entire 100 lb tire will drop down off the back of the truck and become a serious road hazard. I would be happy to send the unit to you for analysis.
Spare tire hoist bracket broke and spare tire was swinging loosely under rear of truck. Further investigation revealed several stress cracks in bracket surrounding the bolt hole. If tire bracket would have broke off tire would drop to pavement and become a road hazard. Sources at dealer indicated they had no bulletins on this item but knew of some people who had lost their spare tires. I still have the parts.
The contact owns a 1998 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The vehicle was equipped with cooper discoverer h/t tires, tire size 235/75/15. The dot number was 3dhlc5u0607. The contact stated that while driving approximately 70 mph, there was an excessive vibration and the vehicle began to sway across the road. The vehicle was driven to the side of the road. The contact noticed that the rear driver's side tire tread was completely separated and the steel was visible. The tire was replaced with a spare tire. The vehicle was then taken to four different independent mechanics. The defective tire had not been replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and there were no resolutions. The approximate failure mileage was 144,000.

: the contact stated the spare tire was damaged while stored in the well of the vehicle. There was a hole in the sidewall due to the tire not being securely attached to the vehicle. Although the tire pressure had been monitored by the contact on a regular basis, three to four times a year, the contact never released the tire from the well. He only checked the pressure while the tire was still attached to the vehicle, therefore, the contact was unaware that the tire was not securely attached. The owner's manual did not provide instructions on how to remove the spare tire for regular inspection.

Pickup came with 17 inch tires. Ordered 3 new 17 inch tires and was planning on using the spare as the 4th tire. The spare was a 16 inch tire instead on a 17 inch. Dealership claims no damage wil come to vehicle or lost of driving control when using the 16 inch tire. Gm web site clearly states "mixing tires could cause you to lose control while driving. " dealership showed me bulleting from gm stating the size difference will not cause concern. Who do I believe?.

The spare tire was not the same size of the tires mounted on the vehicle. The consumer stated that Chevrolet does not make nor provide 17 inch spare tires for his vehicle. The 2005 vehicles now have 17 inch spare tires. The consumer asked if it is safe to make an 8000 mile journey pulling a 6000 pound trailer with two different size tires on his vehicle.

Spare tire tools not correct. I do not have access to my spare tire. Female end of lowering tool not the correct size to engage the male end located at the end of the tube assembly. Upon having a flat tire I was stranded in between towns. This would be very dangerous for for women carrying infants and young children.
While driving cable broke underneath the vehicle that held the spare tire. Was told by the dealer that the there was a recall on the tailgate with the same cable. Consumer felt that this was the same problem with the spare tire cable.
The cable holding up my spare tire on my 2000 z-71 Silverado pickup broke, dropping the spare tire onto the road. Fortunately I was on a road early in the morning just pulling through a intersection and wasn't pulling my horse trailer.
Spare tire was bolted in to tightly, and was unable to get it released when in need of tire. Dealer notified.
Spare tire will not unlatch from under vehicle. Dealer notified.
While driving on highway heard a loud noise. Consumer looked out of the window and saw spare tire rolling towards him at 50 mph. There were no injuries. Spare tire located under truck. It was caused by tire holder cable breaking, due to poor quality and design, tire rolled into ditch ans stopped.
Noticed belt protruding out of left front tire. Took vehicle to firestone dealer. They told me my tires were not under any kind of warranty because, they came as original equipment on my vehicle. I then showed the manager the warranty that came with the vehicle. He said nowhere did he see that they should replace the tires. All the information pertaining to replacing the tires was there on the first page. They then tried to tell me that the tire damage was due to normal wear and I had an alignment problem. I told him I want firestone to honor the warranty and replace it on a prorated basis. The manager then told me that he knew nothing about tires because he was not a tire manager. He then told me several other locations where the facilities had tire managers. He then let me drive off with a damaged tire. Not even offering to put on the spare tire. (tiresize: 265/75/16).
When trying to change the spare you must insert a rod and turn to bring the spare down. The rod fails to connect properly as a result you are unable to lower the spare. When roadside assistance was contacted they said there were many instances just like ours. The dealership explained that the spare was tightened too much causing the shaft(which passes directly over the tire) to bend. My husband, daniel r. Noriz, has a 2000chevy Silverado z71. His VIN # is 2gcek19t6y329756. His truck had the same problem. We have stopped to help a 2000gmc sierra owner bring his spare down as well. He was not aware of this problem and was having trouble bringing his spare down. My sister-in-law has a 2000 GMC sierra with the same problem.
