I purchased this truck used and each time the truck is below 1/4 of a tank or filled up the fuel guage bounces between full and empty causing the "low fuel light" to come on. It will read right once it's at 3/4 and down to 1/4 of a tank for that 1/2 of a tank of fuel otherwise it just bounces constiantly between full and empty even if I just filled it. I spoke with the prior owner and he said the problem started around 3 or so years ago at 75,000 to 80,000 miles on the truck.

Fuel sensor causing fuel gauge to act erratic. Have to use trip meter to keep up with mileage so I won't run out of gas again! gauge may show empty and cause low fuel light to come on when there is a full tank- to showing half full when it is actually empty.
: the contact stated after leaving the vehicle idling there was a loud boom sound heard. The temperature that day was 47 degrees below zero. The contact did not notice a problem at first because the vehicle was still working. After driving to a filling station, there was a fuel leakage discovered under the vehicle. There was a visible split in the fuel tank. The vehicle was towed to a dealership. The dealer was unable to determine the exact cause of the failure. The fuel tank, pump and heat shield were replaced. The contact noticed the original fuel tank had a crack three feet long in the top. There were wires around the fuel pump that had melted. Although the fuel tank had never been replaced the fuel pump was replaced in October of 2005.
The fuel tank fell off the vehicle. The consumer noticed this problem on September 10, 2005. The consumer has not taken vehicle to a dealership yet. The consumer believed that two brackets broke, causing the tank to hang close to the road. The consumer felt that it was dangerous to move the vehicle because of the fuel tank being so close to the ground. The fuel tank was repaired.

Consumer states: something was wrong with the sensor in the gas tank. Was told this by the dealer. The light came on indicating low fuel, and the gauge showed low fuel but actually there was a full tank of gas.
Low fuel light comes on when driving even when tank is full.
: the contact states there is a NHTSA recall campaign 05379000 concerning the anti-lock brakes. This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. In addition the fuel gauge intermittently read the fuel tank as empty when the tank was full and the warning light indicates a low fuel message. No repairs have been made. Updated 1/25/2006 -.
2003 Chevrolet Silverado experiencing problems with the gas gauge and the speedometer. The speedometer needle became stuck and would not return to zero. The dealer replaced the cluster. Looking at the complaints and service bulletins, it's obvious that gm has a problem with their fuel level gauge sending unit in the tank. I also have the problem, along with many others in the area. It appears that no one intends to do anything about it. It appears that someone is going to have to run out of gas in the middle of a busy highway, and when trying to get off the hwy, somebody gets killed, before anything is done. Or, one of our wives gets stranded by running out of gas, and raped and/or murdered, before anything is done. This will keep going until one of the above incidents occurs and a class action suit of all the people that have the problem come together in the suit. We all know what happens then. The lawyers win, and everybody else looses. Fixing the problem would certainly be the cheapest corrective action in the long run.
Dealer replaced the fuel tank. Once again while driving at normal speed fuel tank collapsed. The collapse of the fuel tank was due to the vacuum that pump fuel failed to vent.

After filling the vehicle with fuel, the fuel light comes on to say low fuel, the gauge goes to empty. The consumer is concerned the fuel tank may cause a vehicle fire.
The consumer stated the fuel gauge malfunctioned. Dealer notified. . The fuel gauge was 3/4 full, however the truck ran out of gas 20 miles from the nearest gas station. . The dealer stated there were multiple problems with the fuel sensor with this particular make and model.
While driving gas tank is leaking fluid. Dealer notified.
Starting in late 2001 the fuel gauge started fluctuating from full to empty and anywhere in between even after filling the tank. Chevy service manager said this was a common problem with these vehicles and would cost about $400 to repair. Since this is a common problem, Chevrolet should be required to pay for repairs.
Abs pump was energized when I started vehicle and continued to run even after I turned off the key. Only way I was able to stop pump was by removing abs fuse, causing my abs system to no longer be active. Chevrolet said this was a common problem. Also fuel gauge will intermittently register no fuel after filling up and while riding even when the tank is full.

Gas gauge is ereratic at best. Shows no fuel then pops up to full. Sometimes indicates 1/4 tank of fuel. . In reality, the fuel tank is empty. Has caused us to run out of fuel on the highway several times.
A popping sound was coming from fuel tank. Vehicle been in / out of dealer shop on four occasions, and had various repairs done, but problem still occurred. Feel free to provide us with any further details on this matter .
Anchor bolt holding front strap , noticed was missing when having tires rotated, strap was hanging down aprox. 2-3 in. Away from out side corner of tank. Took to dealer and had bolt replaced.
Fuel sloshes and moves truck and makes thump noise as if no baffles. Afraid it will break tank and spill fuel. Was taken to dealer for repair but not put on shop repair report as I had requested.
