3 Warning Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 06/25/2015

Air bag warning light occasionally started coming on. Took truck to several independent svc places. They said do not have computer reader for airbags. Light started staying on constantly. Took truck to dealers and they said because of liability, the diagnostics are $900 and could run another $1500 or more to fix problem. And, they wanted to keep truck. Truck is used daily for short runs and has a bunch of equipment on it that would have to be removed in order to leave it somewhere. Because of the staggering cost, and the inconvenience of having to off load the truck and not have its use and the lack of places to work on it at all, we have left it alone. I have driven vehicles without airbags over 3 continents and through jungles & all types of terrain over the last 40 years with out ever needing airbags. Now takata makes a safety device that can shoot and kill you -- do I need this? if so, who pays the repair bill?.

7 Warning Light On problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

For no apparent reason, the air bag warning lights on vehicle came on when starting the vehicle. Vehicle has not been involved in any accident. Vehicle was taken in for repair and repair shop said the front sensors for no apparent reason had gone defective disabling the air bags on vehicle. Sensors had to be replaced and I was told parts were only available from a Chevrolet dealership. After repair I checked online and found numerous other owners of Chevrolet vehicles have experienced the same problem. I am concerned with the safety issue of disabled air bags when this part goes defective for no reason.

8 Warning Light On problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 08/31/2014

As I was driving the "service air bag" warning appeared in the information center of the dash and the air bag light started to blink. There was no reason for the warning light. I re-set the information center and the warning reappeared. Very disappointing as there are only 64,537 miles on the vehicle. I checked on the internet to see if there was a recall for this problem for my vehicle, as the miles are very low on my vehicle. Of course there was none for my vehicle. It appears this is a common problem with gm vehicles and an extra expense to the owners. I'm very disappointed at this point. I could not locate any recalls for my vehicle VIN, but there were other recalls involving the air bags with other gm vehicles. I'm lost for words.

14 Warning Light On problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 07/17/2013

I offer same complaint as filed under NHTSA id# 10485141. A service air bag warning light came on in my 2007 Chevrolet Silverado truck. I went to the dealer who sold it to me to have it serviced & was told the right front impact sensor was corroded & had to be replaced. This was a safety issue, and stated to dealer that gm should cover the cost of repair. The dealer said no & that there was no recall on record. I agree completely with the comments provided under above-referenced compliant: "I called gm & was told that this was an environmental issue & the salt air in my area caused the corrosion and gm was not responsible. I told the person that I was talking to that apparently gm must be aware of the problem if they know that the salt air corrodes the sensors. I mentioned the fact that since there is a problem that the air bag could possible inflate while driving & cause the driver to swerve off the road or into another vehicle thus causing death or serious injury. I was then given a file number (71-1127296694) and told the matter would be investigated. I later received a phone call from gm,said looked into complaint & since it was an environmental issue gm was not responsible for repairs. I then stated to him that I was aware that Chrysler recently had a recall of vehicles to be repaired because the airbag sensors were corroding. I was told that gm. Had no such recall. My argument is that this is a safety issue. The corroded sensors could malfunction and cause the air bags to deploy thus causing the driver to swerve and potentially get into a serious accident. Chrysler corp. Must have realized this because they had a recall. " this is a potentially serious situation. Please investigate. Jhb.

15 Warning Light On problem of the 2007 Chevrolet Silverado

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

I had a service air bag warning light t on in my 2007 Chevrolet Silverado pick up truck. I went to a dealer to have it serviced. And was told that the right front impact sensor was corroded and had to be replaced. I felt that this being a safety issue that general motors should cover the cost of repair. I called g. M. And was told that this was an environmental issue and the salt air in my area caused the corrosion and g. M was not responsible. I told the person that I was talking to that apparently g. M. M,ust be aware of the problem if they know that the salt air corrodes the sensors. Furthermore I mentioned the fact that since there is a problem that the air bag could possible inflate while driving and possibly cause the driver to swerve off the road or into another vehicle thus causing death or serious injury. I was then given a file number (71-1127296694) and told the matter would be investigated. I later received a phone call from a g. M. Rep. Who said he looked into my complaint and since it was an environmental issue g. M. Was not responsible for repairs. I then stated to him that I was aware that Chrysler recently had a recall of vehicles to be repaired because the airbag sensors were corroding. I was told that g. M. Had no such recall. My argument is that this is a safety issue. The corroded sensors could malfunction and cause the air bags to deploy thus causing the driver to swerve and potentially get into a serious accident. Chrysler corp. Must have realized this because they had a recall. G. M. Does not seem to care and is apparently waiting until there are serious accidents and they are forced to recall vehicles. I also wonder if g. M. And Chrysler use the same vendor to purchase the sensors. Most likely they do as there are probably not many company's that manufacture them. I feel this is potentially serious situation plus the fact that another automobile manufacturer recognized the problem perhaps your agency should investigate.
