7 Brake Abs Warning Light problem

Failure Date: 05/17/2008

A few years ago I was driving my truck (1999 Chevrolet silverado z71 4x4) on a connecting road (dirt) when I hit the brakes to turn. The abs pump started running. I thought it was odd that it kept running but didn't think about it. When I returned back to my apartment, it was still running. I got up the next morning and the battery was dead. After charging the battery, I noticed the abs control unit (under the cab on the drivers side) was still running. I took it to a Chevrolet dealership which proceeded to tell me I needed a new abs unit $1100. As I cannot afford an $1100 part on a 9 year old truck. I just unplugged it. Both the brake and the abs light stay on in the cab any time the engine is running. I have attempted to find a used unit to no avail. The vehicle now has over 240000 miles on it, with exception of a little rust, the only issue I have is the anti-lock braking system.
