Five problems related to brakes failed have been reported for the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Complete brake failure. Steel lines rusted and burst. On side street, slowing down to stop before entering the highway on down hill location. Stepped on brakes, line failed, just missed rear ending vehicle in front of me, was able to shift in reverse and get stopped before entering highway.
I went to stop to make a turn and brakes went out. Was able to slow enough to make it to the house brake fluid all over rear tire. This is not the 1st time the 1st time hauling a trailer when brakes failed the next time my son was driving and vechile cut him off slammed on the brakes blew line under drivers door caused accident the next time was backing out of driveway and applyed brakes pedal went to the floor at this time I am afraid to drive the truck as I never know when this is going to happen to me I do alot of highway driving and I feel that after replacing 4 brakes lines in less then a year and the truck gives no warning of any kind the the brakes are low.
All brakes lines had to be replaced because they rusted through. Brakes had failed when driving on highway prior to replacement then mysteriously came back locked on one side (left rear).
Emergency brakes fail inspection every year since I owned the vehicle from normal wear and tear. I have them worked on every year to pass state requirements, costing lots of money.
Brakes failed to stop vehicle on several occasions traveling at a slow rate of speed and normally on a slight slope. Occurs almost everytime the vehicle is moving slowly. Consequences have been driven on the grass, redirected direction to miss other cars, no accident yet. To correct, a recall was issued on 8/29/05, had no issue then, having issue now and chevy will not fullfill the recall as they state the vehicle is 11 years old and has over 150,000 miles.
