3 Brake Light On problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/04/2017

I own a 2001 2500hd chevy silverado and last month I had the left rear steel brake line rupture and as a result I lost all braking power. Neither the brake light come on and the proportioning valve did not function correctly during this malfunction since front brakes lost all power. I was very fortunate that the road was clear, traffic was light and there were no pedestrians around. The parking brake worked marginally since I was carrying a load of wet soil home. I truly believe this is a very serious defeat with this gm truck. The very next day I had that rear left brake line replaced and the garage technician said all the remaining brake lines are in a similar state. Thank you, michael wanless.

4 Brake Light On problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 11/05/2016

When coming to a stop sign I applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I was able to steer into a parking lot and coasted to a stop. I had no brakes front or rear. When I stopped at the previous stop sign the brakes worked as usual. After having the pickup towed to a repair shop I was told and shown that the brake lines at the frame behind the left tire had rusted through. This failure came with no warning and at no time did the dash brake light come on.

5 Brake Light On problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 08/08/2016

I was driving approx. 25 mph within 100 ft. Toward a red light. A truck pulling a trailer pulled across the road in front of me. I pressed on the brake pedal. The pedal held for a second and then quickly dropped to the floor. I was able to swerve to the right of the truck, missing it and pushed the emergency brake. Realizing I encountered total brake failure I cautiously drove the truck into a mcdonald's parking lot at the corner. There was no brake warning light come on. I looked under the truck. On the drivers side under the drivers door the underside was soaked with brake fluid. Where the 4 brakelines are bundled together directly on the frame under the drivers door, one of the brake lines has a split in it. The truck is presently being evaluated for repair.

6 Brake Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/30/2016

I was driving my truck on 3/30/16 another vehicle pulled out in front of me. I slammed on my brakes to avoid a wreck. At the next red light I noticed my brakes were soft. I pulled over to check my fluid. It was down about an inch. I decided to try to make it home. Then a service brake light came on. I did make it home. I crawled under the truck and brake fluid was from the front to the back of the truck. I noticed two compromised metal brake lines on the driver side frame rail that were rusted through. I touched the lines and they were falling apart and flaking off metal at the touch. I contacted Chevrolet and it was towed to the dealer. They quoted me $1,100 to repair the problem. My truck is a 2006 I bought it brand new it has 59,500 miles on it and I paid right at $50,000 for my truck. It is unacceptable for this to happen in less than 10 years of ownership. This is a huge safety issue since Chevrolet used inferior and cheap products in their trucks. There should be a recall on this. Someone could have been seriously injured or killed the other day when I was driving. I replaced all of the rotors and brake pads and one caliper not 9 months ago. I never thought that my metal lines were compromised until I had a failure. I have lost alot of faith in gm due to this issue. I am still working with gm and the dealer to get the problem resolved, but it is not looking good. I am wondering how many other vehicles are compromised. I was talking to my uncle the other day and a gentleman overheard my conversation. He told me that he had a 2003 2500 Chevrolet the brakes also failed on. He was towing a trailer and toatled his truck. I am completely out of warranty as of next month. Gm says to keep my bill for the replacement of the lines that I may get paid back. I dont think that is likely at all. This should be a recall because safety is compromised.

Failure Date: 02/09/2015

The contact owns a 2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500. The contact stated that the brake light warning lamp illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the authorized dealer who diagnosed that there was an internal failure with the module and the dealer replaced the rear brakes, the module, and the relay switch. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 45,000.

8 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/09/2014

Had total brake failure, no warning till slowing down at intersection of busy road. Apx. 100 yards before stop light I applied brakes, pedal was soft, pumped brakes and pedal went all the way to floor! I quickly pumped brakes and came to stop in the intersection not 2 seconds after motorcycle with passenger passed in front of me! no brake warning light ever alerted, found steel brake line had rusted and ruptured. This truck has only 65000 miles on it, found another line is very rusted in same place as it crosses over frame. After research on repairs, found that this is common problem with these trucks from 1999 to 2003. This one could have been fatal,as motorcycle was traveling at least 45 mph. These trucks are all coming to the age of failure. Thank god, I was not pulling my boat that weighs 6700 lbs as this truck can no longer be trusted. I will be checking into repairs, and it will be sold !.

9 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/01/2014

Tl- the contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that the anti-lock brake system light illuminated for an extended period of time. The contact had to restart the vehicle to reset the computer and the failure recurred. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair shop who diagnosed that the wheel speed sensor needed to be cleaned. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact was not included in NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 140,000. Dyd.

10 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/24/2014

I was loaded up on my 2003 2500hd Chevrolet silverado for the weekend holiday camp trip with truck camper, and boat on trailer behind. For last minute safety my partner was inside the truck and I outside to test the brake lights, signals usual stuff before taking off. For no reason at all the brakes went to the floor and brake fluid all over the ground on the driver side of the vehicle. In looking closer the second line from the driver door on top of the frame has a split in it. I have now looked at the numerous complaints on this happening to other people. I have looked at gm's response for this obvious defect in the brake system and tend to wonder how many persons at gm would purchase a vehicle for themselves or their loved ones knowing of this huge safety issue. The complaints are not just in salt related places. Even if they were does gm not build their vehicles for all states and road conditions??? I can say I am one of the lucky ones that this just happened in our driveway. Where were going entailed mountain driving and I do not believe the outcome would have been the same if it were to happen then I keep thinking about this daily and the fear that goes with the thought of, what if we were in the mountains? does not go away. I will not drive this vehicle again until I have replaced all the brake lines with stainless steel ones and it is going to be costly. I should not have to do this nor should have all the other persons who have had to. This is an unbelievable safety issue that needs to be addressed immediately before some fatality happens if not already. These vehicles need to be safe in all driving conditions and areas period. Gm needs to recall these vehicles on this which I understand is 6. 1 million. I am appalled they have not already recalled on this and portrayed such a lame excuse as to not do something about it. Please fix this now!.

11 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/16/2013

Brake warning light illuminated along with chime and "service brake system" message on dash display. Chevy service technican diagnosed ruptured connection from line to brake modulator caused by corrosion and recommended replacing all brake lines at cost of $1700. Ordinary steel in this application is a poor materials choice--stainless steel would have lasted the life of the vehicle without this safety issue. Am told new lines are rubber coated for longer life. Antique vehicles (over 25 years old), are expected to have this issue, not a 10 year old truck.

12 Brake Light On problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 08/29/2013

Traveling on road at posted speed of 35mph approaching a highway intersection. Tried to make a normal stop and brake pedal went to the floor. Truck went through red light and through intersection of a section of highway that is 8 lanes wide. If not for early time of day it would have been a lot more traffic and killed someone. Stopped truck by slamming into park. No brake warning light prior to this or after.

13 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 07/13/2013

On restarting the vehicle moments after having driven it without issue, the brake pedal felt spongy, and with more pressure, sunk to the floor. Fluid was found to be running off of the truck frame under the drivers door. No warning light came on at the time. Later, apparently when the fluid had drained down enough, the brake warning light came on. On inspection, all of the brake lines were found to be very badly decayed just forward of the abs unit, with one having failed. This is not an off-road truck. It has had conservative road use. Fortunately, I was not towing my 8000 pound trailer at the time. I recently sold a 1972 Chevrolet which had never required any brake line replacements. Why are these relatively new trucks brakes all failing?.

14 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

Brakes failed suddenly. We were lucky that we were only going about 20 mph. Brake light did not come on and still does not show a problem. Rusted brake line ruptured and brake fluid comes out when the brakes are applied. I just sold a Toyota 1995 4wd that has been exposed to the same environment and there is very little rust compared to the Chevrolet. It looks like to me that all the lines should be replaced. I have not yet had it repaired. This could have cause a very bad accident. We are not driving until it is repaired.

15 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/31/2013

Vehicle was towing trailer in hayfield and brakes went out. The vehicle was in 4 wheel drive low and in 1st gear. My husband got it back to the barn which was about 1/4 mile away and then it had total brake failure. The brake light never came on and our brakes were not old. We found a leak in our main brake line and my husband pinched the line off so we would have some front brake so we could get the truck home so we could work on it. He removed the line and it was so badly rusted, that it had gotten 3 major holes in the line and we did have major brake failure. The line is was very rusty in several places, but the worst is where the cab and bed come together. Upon researching we have found that this model has a problem with the line rusting and causing brake failure. We regularly haul horses to horse shows and haul other heavy loads on the road. I can only imagine what might have happened had we been on a major highway and this happened. We bought our truck new and maitain it well. We have never had lines rust on anything like this and never had complete brake failure. We feel that this is a safety issue that needs to be addressed. It is very expensive repair, but it is serious. We make sure we have seat belts, air bags, emissions are low and I feel that brake lines should be made out of a material that will not rust out and cause a major failure. This happened so fast - we had brake and then we didn't have brake. I thank god that we were in the hayfield. We have talked to several people that have had this happen and we also talked to a repair shop that said he had a lot of these come into his shop also. We just want this made known and it should be a recall, but also a wake up call to use better materials.

16 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

While on vacation and carrying a ruck camper, with no warning, brake pedal began losing firmness, going near floor. We were able to slow down and get to the side of the road, but brakes would not hold vehicle completely stopped. After a few minutes the pedal did become a bit more firm and we drove very slowly to a better place to stop. This time the brake warning light on the instrument cluster came on as we were stopping. There was very little fluid in the brake reservoir and brake fluid could be seem leaking it under the truck. The truck, and camper, were towed. Dealer says all brake lines are rusted and must be replaced. Very expensive - and dangerous!.

17 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 03/27/2013

While driving on a main city street with heavy traffic the cars ahead of me started to brake. I started to apply my brakes lightly when the pedal went right to the floor, I went for the emergency brake and pulled to the side of the road. I was able to stop the truck. After inspection the main brake line to the rear of the vehicle was rusted and ruptured ! all of the other brake lines on the vehicle are in just as bad shape and need to be replaced also.

18 Brake Light On problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/26/2013

Master cylinder reservoir fluid level dropped from full to activation of brake service light. Investigation of the cause led to the discovery a leak in the brake line from the anti lock brake actuator to the right front brake caliper. All the brake lines appear to be extensively corroded.

19 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/11/2013

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 hd. The contact stated that she heard a clicking noise near the dashboard and the brake warning light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact then applied the brakes however, the brake pedal traveled to the floorboard abnormally and did not stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection where they advised that the brake lines were corroded and rusted. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified but provided no assistance. The failure mileage was 60,000. The VIN was unavailable.

20 Brake Light On problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 01/04/2013

Loaded truck with lumber at local lumber store, went to move truck to leave. As soon as I started to move the red brake light came on. Got out opened the hood saw almost of my brake fluid gone-thought it was just needing fluid-drove few blocks to lube service dealer wand together inspected the brake lines under the driver seat where you could see brake fluid all over the line-that has rotted through-had vehicle towed to repair/replace all brake lines. See invoice 166644. Had brake lines replaced cost was $1163. 59 and truck was out of my use for 3 days.

21 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

To start off, my brake line are severely corroded as the was a new england truck for the first 8 years of its life. After sitting overnight, I went to drive my truck yesterday. Upon starting it, I received the message "service brake system" on the driver information screen. I also noticed the brake light was on and that the pedal went to the floor. I went under the hood and noticed the brake master cylinder was empty and several of the brake lines were wet with brake fluid. I had just checked my brake fluid (with all of my other fluids this week as I was on a camping trip when this happened. I looked this up on the internet when I got home and found NHTSA action number dp10003 that discussed this exact same issue. Please advise on the status of this investigation. Thank you.

22 Brake Light On problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 09/22/2012

I was driving from the boat launch to park my 2004 chevy Silverado 2500hd when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. I pumped the brakes as I slowly approached my parking spot, however, I could not get any pressure to build up in the system. With no action on the brake calipers, I used my parking brake to stop as I entered my parking spot. There was no warning or indicator light alerting me to any brake problems. After parking I noticed a leaking brake line under the driver's side near the abs brake module. I made a temporary repair, attempted to bleed and pump up the brakes which resulted in the rear brake line blowing out right at the hose connection. Still no warning or indicator light came on to alert me to any problems with the brake system. I had the vehicle towed home and as we were taking my vehicle off the truck, the brake warning light finally came on and the electronic dash displayed the message "service brake system". The lack of fluid in the brake reservoir must have triggered the sensor there. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that the brake line failed inside a plastic brake line retaining clip located on the outside of the frame just before it was routed over to the abs modulator valve under the vehicle on the driver's side on the inside of the frame. I replaced all the brake lines with pre-bent stainless steel lines from classictube. Com. I am only glad that this happened in a parking lot and not while I was towing my boat, I do not believe I would have had enough wits about me to use the parking brake to stop my truck. I mentioned this problem to my local gm dealer who blamed it on the treatment of roads during the winter months. Granted living in the "snow belt" one should expect corrosion but never complete brake failure without any warning. There are numerous complaints online, just search for silverado brake failure.

23 Brake Light On problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

Excessive brake line rust and failure with loss of service brakes on gm light trucks. I recently had an experience where the metal brake lines broke unexpectedly on my 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 2500hd light truck. The brake pedal went to the floor while attempting to stop at a neighborhood stop sign. The vehicle had to be stopped from approximately 10mph using the parking brake and downshifting. No accident occurred. A local service station found that most all of the vehicle's brake lines were excessively rusted. All brake lines were replaced at a cost of $650.

24 Brake Light On problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 05/22/2011

Just backed into the st. Clair river to retrieve small boat. Loaded boat. As I put my foot down on brake pedal to move transmission to drive, brake pedal went to floor, got the trans to neutral, but not to drive. The truck and boat started to roll into river. Panic situation. . . Jambed trans into drive, and was able to get truck out of river, with water line half way up drivers door. Once home discovered badly rusted brake line above fuel tank ruptured. Repaired. . . Two months later, while wife was driving truck to work, brake line between master cylinder and abs modual failed. Had enough! replaced all brake lines on truck except the one over rear axel. I still willd o that one also. Abs/brake lights on dash are still illuminated. Still trying to figure out that issue. . Many discussions with other silverado owners, and autoparts employees. This seems to be a very common issue, with very dangarous potential for injurys. .

25 Brake Light On problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 04/08/2011

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet silvarado 2500. While driving approximately 25 mph the brake pedal extended to the floor more than usual and the vehicle became difficult to stop while applying pressure to the brake pedal. The brake light illuminated on the instrument panel. The contact inspected the vehicle and noticed that one of the shocks were wet and covered with oil. The contact noticed that the rear brake line which connects to the rear axle was also leaking oil. The vehicle was inspected by a dealer or local mechanic. There was an open investigation; NHTSA action number ea11001 (service brakes, hydraulic service brakes, hydraulic:foundation components:hoses, lines/piping, and fittings). The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

26 Brake Light On problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

Failure Date: 12/20/2008

I bought my 2003 silverado new. No complaints until 2008 when the brake rotors and calipers started rusting. Toward the end of the year I replaced the front rotors with new and exercised the calipers. I drove it a month and the rear brakes were acting up. I parked it until 2009 and tried driving it again. The rear brakes were acting as if they were not even there. I removed the wheels and found nothing but rust. Not just surface rust but deep pitted rust on the rotors and calipers. I replaced the rear rotors and calipers, installed new pads and bled the system, front and rear. Also noticed the brake lines are severely rusted but did not change them yet. I drove the truck for a week and was pleased with the way the brakes were working. Then the anti-lock brake light came on followed by the regular brake light. Everything looked normal, fluid level, no leaks, brakes seemed to work ok but wasn't going to chance it. I parked the truck and called the dealer and they said the only recall was for front abs sensors. How can a vehicle with less than 35,000 miles have its brakes turn into a ball of rust ! I owned a 88 silverado with 210,000 miles with no problems with the brakes. They must be using cheap chinese rotors and calipers. I'm luckier than most, I haven't had any close calls. I'm just disappointed in gm accountability. Hope you enjoyed your bonus I gave you.
