36 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

Failure Date: 05/01/2011

S10 appropriate handling -copy of a letter to the president re the dangers of rupturing brake lines on a 2002 Chevrolet Silverado 3500. The consumer stated the vehicle needed front brake pads, rotors which were more rusted out than worn and one caliper. As the consumer was bleeding the air from the hydraulic circuit, he noticed brake fluid pouring out of three locations on the driver's side. The steel brake lines had ruptured on both hydraulic circuits due to the steel lines rusting out. The consumer replaced all of the steel lines, as some of the rust was hidden from view within plastic retainers.

37 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

Failure Date: 01/28/2011

Brake lines rust through with no advance warning. In my case it was at highway speeds while the truck was loaded with approx. 1000 lbs of material. Fortunately it was just the rear lines so I still had front brakes to bring the vehicle to a complete stop. When researching this event I found cases that the front and rear brakes rusted through at the same time. Due to the amount of weight these trucks can haul or tow I believe the chances of a serious accident are great enough to warrant nhsta to investigate this farther.

38 Brake Hoses, Lines/piping, And Fittings problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Silverado 3500

Failure Date: 01/19/2011

Brake lines, transmission lines and engine coolant lines all failing on 2004 chevy Silverado 3500 hd as well as on 2003 GMC sierra 2500 hd. These problems have caused numerous amounts of time to repair and replafe, and today there was a brake failuer on the 2004 hd GMC that almost resulted in deadly accident. These lines should not have rusted and we have issues with both vehicles on the same lines. These vehicles were producted with inadequate parts for all lines on the underside of vehicle. There should not be 1,000 plus complaints from consumers regarding the rusting of these components, of which have cuased several major anmd life safety issues. The brake lines are an integral part of any vehicle and to have them rust thru to the degree of all the complaints there is obviously an issue with the compenents the manufacturer installed on these vehicles. Between our 2004 chevy and 2003 GMC trucks we have replaced all of the tranmission collant lines, oil engine lines and ready to change brake lines in 1 truck with the other truck having to also be replaced due to rust. The entire underside compenents are completely rusted through.
