35 problems related to brake electric antilock have been reported for the 1997 Chevrolet Suburban. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Arbitrary activation of the abs brakes at slow speeds or when parking. This causes the vehicle to not stop and continue moving for a few inches to a few feet. Vary hazardous when parking in tight areas or around children in a parking lot. Had similar problem on chevy 1999 silverado k1500 pickup that resulted in a recall. Would suggest the same on this vehicle to avoid same hazardous situation.
I have a 1997 chevy Suburban with a 7. 4 engine. For the most part its been a good vehicle, but the brakes are another story. The Suburban has been through 2 sets of front brakes, and none in the rear. Being concerned, the 3rd mechanic to really spend time figuring out the problem, found out the brake pressure modulator valve has malfunctioned. $800 for replacement. Doing a little research, gm had recalled this part on several of there 2000 SUV models. Contacted the gm customer service line, and they told me that it is an "old vehicle" and gm will not do anything about it. So I guess gm's safety systems are only good for 10 years. This will be my last gm vehicle I will ever own.

There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the abs. The vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the year of the vehicle. Repairs have been made and the manufacturer has been alerted.
The consumer states 1997 Chevrolet Suburban has brake problems. This resulted in a crash, and there were only minor injuries. The brakes just started having problems for a couple of weeks. Before the consumer could get a chance to have the brakes checked, had an accident. The brakes were checked and fixed after the accident, and the mechanic at the dealership told the consumer that this was very common with corrosion build up. The consumer had to pay $1300. 00 to fix the braking system. Prior to the accident the brakes were losing power, and it was difficult to stop. This was an intermittent problem. The consumer contacted gm about the problem with an e-mail, with no response. The consumer lives in a salt-belt state. The mechanic stated that there was a corrosion build up on the abs sensor. When I apply the brakes to my 1997 chevy Suburban, the abs kicks on and pulsates extending the stopping distance tremendously. There has been a recall on this for recent year Suburbans, but not as far back as the 1997 model.
Brakes had to be replaced every three to four months. Also, power steering was defective, and made the steering wheel difficult to turn. Consumer was aware if the brakes malfunctioning in conjugation with the steering problem.
The contact states there is NHTSA recall campaign 05v379000 concerning the anti- lock brakes. This vehicle has the same problems as indicated in the recall, but it is not included in the recall due to VIN. The contact repaired the vehicle at his own expense. While driving would step on the brakes pedal to stop or just to reduce the speed on vehicle, but brakes would not activate, resulting in extended stopping distance. Dealer had been contacted. Please provide more information.
When applying the brakes the steering wheel vibrates very hard, and vehicle could possibly lose control. Took to dealer, they said it was out of warranty.

When driving at any speed and applying the brakes, they will go straight to the floorboard, and the abs system will kick in. Consumer had to pump the brakes hard to stop the vehicle.
When traveling on wet pavement about 10-15 mph and upon depressing the brake pedal to make a gradual stop, the anti-lock brakes locked up, causing the vehicle to go into a skid, resulting in extended stopping distance. Consumer has contacted the dealer. Please provide any further details.
Brake pedal goes down to the floor whenever brakes are applied. Dealer was not notified at this time.
While driving the brakes aren't working because the front brakes are not strong to stop the truck,this also causes extended stopping distance.
While driving vehicle about any mph from 2-3 to 65 mph on a panic stop the consumer tried to apply brake pedal to stop vehicle, but vehicle did not stop. According to consumer, brakes pedal goes all the way to the floor and he does not think it is the abs. Dealer had checked other vehicles and compared them about the same problem.
Consumer experiencing ongoing problem with vehicle braking system. Intermittently whenever brakes are applied in wet condition the brakes would delay in stopping. Also, whenever the brakes are used in an emergencey situation the vehicle would not stop properly, it would continue to go until vehicle came to 5-10 mph then it would grab, causing vehicle to lock-up. After the lock-up, the brake system would pop loose when consumer applied the accelerator. Dealer notified and informed consumer that the problem could not be duplicated.

While driving vehicle about 20 mph, the vehicle's brakes does not stop, and the wheels lock. The had been taken to dealer.
Driving the Suburban about 30mph and vehicle in front stopped, applied foot to the brake pedal to stop, and the pedal just went down to the floorboard and the vehicle hit the back of truck.
Whenever the brakes are applied, they would pull to the left onto another lane. Sometimes would pull to the right onto another lane. Have taken vehicle to dealership 17 times and nothing was found wrong with brakes. The manufacturer has closed the files on the Suburban.
Driving along and stopped at a traffic light, light changed and vehicle proceeded approximately 5mph. Vehicle ahead stopped, tried to stop, applied brakes, almost to the point of standing and the vehicle would not stop.

Abs brakes problems on my 1997 chevy tahoe 4dr 4-wheel drive. The brakes have been terrible since I obtained this vehicle when it was brand new. They would grunt & groan, skip and act erratic. On ice and snow, I would actually go faster when I would apply the brakes and slide much faster than a car with regular brakes. On dry roads at slow speeds in town driving, the brakes didn't seem to take hold all the time. There would be a delay action when applying the brakes. I almost rear-ended other vehicles three times, through no fault of my own. I hate abs brakes and would like to buy one without it. Abs brakes systems are very dangerous, especially on this 1997 chev tahoe 4-wheel drive. I checked with mechanics and they all say that's just abs brakes, and I have to put up with it. This is wrong as they are a very real danger. I have to be extremely careful allowing substantial distance between vehicles and then its not safe. I think I have a lemon and know there are lots of other complaints about it around here. How about a little help with recalls and a new vehicle?.
Front brakes wearing out every 6,000 mi, rear brakes show virtually no wear after 138,000 mi. The antilock brakes feel spongy and vehicle won't stop properly. Why does some one have to die before you people listen.
The abs brakes has came on 561 times in one year and the dealer has tried to fix the brake 5 times, and there is no change in the failure of the brakes. When the driver applied the brakes the pedal went to the floor while the truck was going 10mph. The truck did not stop at that speed. The dealer still has not fixed the problem about the pedal going to the floor, and the brakes do not hold when this happens. The driver has contacted the dealer 20 times, and they still have not called him back yet. He took matters in his own hands and hopes that NHTSA can assit him with any kind of help.
Applied the brakes and the pedal went to the floor. This do not happen all the time, just sometimes. When this problem does occur, the vehicle experiences extended stopping distance.

During a normal braking procedures severe vibration will occur which will shake dashboard and entire vehicle.
When applying the brakes in wet weather the abs locks up and vehicle skids for an excessive amount of distance. Dealer can't duplicate the problem.
Abs system is faulty, dealer says there is no problem found. Nlm.
Pulls left while driving down road or when braking. Multiple service attempts. Still not fixed. Dealer cannot fix, gm won't replace vehicle. Vehicle is not safe and is a safety hazard.
