5 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/15/2011

I own a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban which when braking at low speeds the pedal drops near the floor and the abs causes it to kick back and pulsate this happens on an intermittent basis causing greatly increased stopping distances. These symptoms are consistant with a recall where they sprayed anti corrosion stuff on an abs speed sensor as a fix. This recall was performed on my vehicle 3 years ago at 40k miles now I am experiencing the same problem again @ 78k miles and gm says they are not obligated to perform it again or come up with a more permanent fix.

Contacted my dealership but they were unable to look back more than 10 years. Contacted gm customer service who state nhb has not issued a recall and the problem is likely due to my vehicles age and milage. They suggest I repair my vehicle and save the receipts just iin case the nhb issues a recall in the future. Onset of problem at 40,000 miles. Much worse more recently. Currently 60,000 miles on vehicle.

8 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/20/2010

The abs system on my 2000 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 failed to operate properly. It activated while stopping at slow speeds. There is a product safety recall issued #050683 front wheel speed sensor corrosion. The Chevrolet dealership refused to repair under the recall because the vehicle is now registered in kansas, however missouri is covered. I guess less than an inch of geography makes the difference between what is safe and covered and what is not safe and covered. I paid to have it repaired for the safety issues concerned. I purchased the used vehicle in missouri, and it was registered and driven in missouri. I put most of the miles driving to work in missouri. I'm confused about the logic at gm. Will be the last gm vehicle in my life.

13 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/01/2009

Abs would incorrectly engage when stopping at low speeds (< 5 mph). Increases stopping distance since abs starts pumping instead of just applying brakes. This happens on ideal road conditions and at low speed/non skidding stops. Mechanic replaced wheel hub assembly on both front left and front right wheels (wheel hub included new abs speed sensor). Problem was fixed. This is obviously a safety issue. Gm has already recalled 99 - 2002 (mine is a 2003) Suburbans for this. Mechanic indicated that abs sensors were badly corroded (presumably) from salt getting into contact with the sensor. Mechanic also indicated that he has fixed this in *many* Suburbans and in many cases that came after owners had unsuccessfully tried to get dealers to fix the issue. Mechanic said dealers were replacing the abs computer, at a cost of thousands of dollars, and problem still wasn't fixed. Important note: it appears that regardless of whether a recall is done, dealers should at least be aware of this common safety problem with Suburbans from this time period.

14 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/10/2008

Based on NHTSA #05v379000, our 2003 Chevrolet Suburban has exhibited the same problem of engaging the abs system when coming to a stop at a light or intersection. This only happens on a slow stop. The referenced recall does not include year 2003 and Chevrolet will not repair at no charge. This problem happens intermittently, sometimes three times in one day and then not at all for a couple of days. My auto mechanic has confirmed the problem is a corrosion of front wheel speed sensor.

15 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/15/2008

2003 chevy Suburban is having the same abs problems that led to the recall of 99-2002 Suburbans in the "salt belt". I have talked to the dealer as well as gm, but to no avail. The 2003 needs to be recalled as well. Thank you.

16 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

The abs on my 2001 chevy Suburban activates at slow speeds extending my stopping distance. I was subject to a recall in October, 2005 when I had no symptoms but took my vehicle to the dealer who says they completed the recall requirements. Now, I am having the symptoms and gm refuses to take care of the problem. I spent $80 at a dealer for diagnosis and they say it is a faulty wheel sensor(low voltage) and want another $330 to repair. The recall letter I was sent specifically states that "in some cases, the front wheel speed sensor may require replacement. " gm offered me a 10% discount on the repair after I called them. I feel they should repair it. Nhtsa recall # 05v379000.

25 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/23/2005

My wife complained that the brake system was not functioning properly on our 2002 Suburban. Random failures occurred with the abs system at low speed while coming to a stop. Pedal did not respond, pulsed and vibrated. Malfunction of abs brake system was identified as corrosion issue surrounding abs speed sensor mounting surface. Speed sensors were removed and areas cleaned of all corrosion and rust. Electrical readings improved performance of one side (320mvac plus) but did not improve second sensor (less than 200mvac). Further evaluation of the sensor revealed significant warpage to the sensor base attributed to corrosion. Required air gap could not be obtained due to the warped base. Replaced both sensors. Electrical reading on new sensors were greatly improved and no further malfunctions have occurred.

This caused us to drift past stop signs on a number of occasions and caused near collisions in slow moving parking lot driving. I took the vehicle to a local dealer, hawkins Chevrolet Oldsmobile, inc. And was told the abs speed sensor was corroded and not working properly. They replaced the abs speed sensors on the two front wheels on 8/25/05 under invoice ctcs85504. I inquired about whether this would be replaced for free given the obvious safety implications and was told to file a claim with gm customer service. The service rep said that this was normal wear and tear and denied the claim, but registered a complaint under file# 1-355599627 on 8/12/05. I conducted further research on the internet and found a news article about the gm recall for this same defect in canada.

28 Brake Antilock Wheel Speed Sensor problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/20/2005

This is a known problem here is a copy of what is wrong with my 2001 chevy Suburban 4x4 2500 NHTSA action number : pe05020 manufacturer : general motors corp. Component : service brakes, hydraulic:antilock date investigation opened : April 28, 2005 date investigation closed : open summary: in November 2004, gm notified odi that it was recalling approximately 150,000 model year 1999-2002 c/k model trucks in eastern canada to correct a condition in the antilock brake system (abs) that may result in unwanted abs activation and increased stopping distances during low-speed brake applications. Gm indicated that the condition can occur if corrosion forms under the wheel speed sensor and moves the sensor away from the integral speed-sensor toothed ring. The condition does not set any abs codes nor does it illuminate the abs warning lamp. Gm's recall procedure involved removing the wheel speed sensors, cleaning the sensor mounting surfaces on the bearings, applying zinc-x to the cleaned surfaces, greasing the mounting surfaces, reinstalling the speed sensors, and verifying that the wheel speed signal output voltages were within specification. Gm reported a failure rate of 0. 32 incidents per thousand vehicles in the vehicles covered by the recall in canada. Gm indicated that the corresponding rate in u. S. Corrosion states was 0. 03 iptv and that it would continue to monitor that experience. Odi has received 120 complaints involving my 1999-2002 c/k trucks in u. S. Salt belt states, which appear to be related to the defect condition addressed by gm's safety recall in canada. Twenty-two of the complaints allege that a crash occurred, including one that involved 6 vehicles and resulted in 4 injuries. A preliminary evaluation has been opened to assess the incident frequency and trend associated with the wheel speed sensor condition in the united states.
