I took my vehicle in for our states' required annual vehicle inspection. The mechanic observed that the brake lines were extremely rusty and, in his own words, on the verge of complete failure. He showed me the lines which were flaking and already pitted and crevased. He noted this was a **very** dangerous condition and could result in a "no brake condition". After showing me the brake lines in question, he recommended full brake line replacement. I took his recommendation seriously and I went home and did some research on the internet, and much to my surprise, the internet abounded with owners of 1999-2003 Suburban (and other chevy/gm models) problems associated with the rusting of brake lines. !!! I was appalled that so many problems have been documented and with no formal recourse/action taken by Chevrolet. [as a related note, in the prior annual inspection for this vehicle, the abs sensors were noted as rusted through, and which I had replaced]. We live in virginia where the weather is moderate and there is not that much winter conditions that require road salting, etc. So this is not a result of the vehicle living in harsh road-salted conditions. I ended up deciding to spend the $$ to remediate this dangerous driving condition and to get another 10 years out of the vehicle. I purchased a stainless steel set of pre-bent brake lines specific to this vehicle (shows that there is a demand for these in the market because of this condition) and having them installed (over $1k total). Ouch! Chevrolet needs to step up to the plate, admit culpability, and make it right for vehicle owners. Come on chevy. . .
I have been dealing with this problem with the abs system for over 2 years and have replaced all the sensors brakes and hubs on my Suburban, I have been reading all the customer complaints and chevy is well aware of this issue. My abs system runs when it wants prevents my car from properly stopping and when I reported the issue they told me to pull the fuse so the pump would shut off, so I am driving around with no abs system and we just had the sensors replaced again as well as the hub and the same thing is happening with the pulsating of the break peddle and the running pump I would think chevy would do a recall with all the complaints. .

Vehicle was serviced per recall below on 1/26/2006. Abs sensor was inspected and cleaned, but not replaced. Defect covered in recall is now being displayed by vehicle (braking distance is extended at low speed - caused by abs sensor malfunction). Vehicle is currently not driveable. Apparently the solution in the recall was not sufficient to address the problem. Dealer and Chevrolet refuse to address this problem. Recommend that the effectiveness of the recall solution be re-evaluated. Nhtsa action number: 05v379000

Abs system was serviced as part of 2006 recall campaign. Sensors were cleaned and returned to service. Please note that in 2006 when issue first surfaced, one week prior to recall, Chevrolet dealer quoted a price over $800. 00 to replace hubs. Then when recall was announced, they said the hubs could be cleaned. In November 2011 sensors failed again and hubs (housing sensors) were replaced. The recall campaign was not effective.
My 2002 chevy Suburban was serviced under NHTSA id 05v3379000 on 11/24/06. The problem is the vehicle will not stop between 5-10mph due to corrosion near abs sensor - under recall clean area and lube. Since this is a corrosion issue it will recur many time in future. Approx 4 years after recall service - I am having the exact symptoms described in recall. I think this recall should be recurring since corrosion is constantly occurring.
The contact owns a 2003 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated when braking at low speeds, the abs would independently activate. The failure progressed over time and would occur several times while in transit. The dealer advised that the abs was defective and the sensors would need to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. Failure mileage was approximately 55,000 and the current mileage was approximately 60,000.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated that the anti-lock brake sensor would independently engage when driving at speeds of at least 10 mph. When the abs would activate it would cause an unusual increase in stopping distance. The contact previously received notification of NHTSA campaign id number: 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: anti-lock) but was advised by the dealer that because the vehicle was over 100,000 miles, they would not make repairs. The manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 65,000 and the current mileage was 113,000.
The NHTSA campaign id #l 05v379000 on my 2001 Chevrolet Suburban was performed in 2005 at the valenti auto mall in mystic, CT. The intent was to treat a gm recall no. 05068 to fix abs front hub sensors that would corrode. Supposedly they did this at 85,000 miles in 2005. In 2009, I have been having recurring abs issues and they replaced the inaccurate sensor signal at $675. Recurring issues they now need to replace the passenger side sensor at $675. The issue is that the sensor recall did not solve the problem, gm has stated the customer must pay for the very issue the recall called out, which was corroded senor hub assemblies and the customer must pay. This has been a very dangerous condition that gm/Chevrolet knew of and did not fix in an appropriate manner. The Suburban barely does not stop well at all and is very dangerous.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated when the brakes were applied at a low speeds the antilock system came on and caused the brakes to fail. While driving 60 mph the power steering failed. There was a plastic electronic variable orifice ring with wires attached to the steering sensor which caused the steering to be uncontrollable when driving. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer stated that there were no recalls for his VIN on any of the failures. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 150,000 and the current mileage was 197,000.

The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the abs would engage at any speed while driving on dry pavement. The dealer repaired the brakes and sensors. The contact found a recall on the internet regarding the abs, but the vehicle was not included. She feels that the vehicle is unsafe to drive because it is used to transport her child. The current mileage was 96,000 and failure mileage was 85,000.
Initially purchased Suburban with 61,000 mi. Had no problems with anything. I received a notice from gm for a recall on 2001's for activation of abs braking system at slow speeds. Having no problems with it at the time I waited a few weeks before going to bergstrom chevy in neenah WI. I let them take the vehicle in the garage to do the recall work. 2 and a half hours later they called me from the waiting area and said it was ready. I drove away and continued to have no problems until approx. 14 months later when the abs started to activate at every stop at around 5mph. It continues to do this now and has since the summer of 2008. I contacted bergstrom and gm about the problem and they say they no longer do this recall work without charge. I looked at the bolt heads on the front brake calipers to see if they were marred by removal and there is no evidence that these bolts were ever removed for servicing the sensors. The facing of the bolts is still intact with no marking of any kind on these bolts so I am certain bergstrom never removed the calipers to clean the sensors. I am furious with gm and their products - I have always been a gm customer since beginning to drive in 1976 but with the products they've been producing in the last 10-15 years I will never buy another late model gm product. ( I am also having issues with the intake manifold on my 1998 Buick park Ave - another inferior gm product) it's no wonder the company is having financial difficulty with all the complaints I've been hearing about and experiencing with their products.
The abs on our 99 Chevrolet Suburban began kicking in everytime we hit the brakes. We took it in the be diagnosed and was told that there is a recall, campaign number 05v379000, on this issue that covered over a million vehicles including other 99 Chevrolet Suburbans but that our particular VIN number was not included in the recall. We were told that the sensors had rusted and were not recieveing the amps they needed to work properly. The repairs were cleaning the mounting surface, greasing, and replacing the sensors. This diagnosis and the repairs needed were the exact same problem as all the recalled vehicles. We believe our vehicle should be included in this recall. At this point we have not yet had the problem fixed.
The contact owns a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact is experiencing abs issues. An independent mechanic stated that the sensors needed to be cleaned on the wheel sensor. The manufacturer stated that the VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock), even though the failures were identical. The failure and current mileages were 140,942. Updated 02/10/09 updated 02/11/09.
The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the abs warning indicator illuminated. It was diagnosed that the hub sensor assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure recurred. The manufacturer was notified. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent. The approximate failure mileage was 180,000. The VIN was not available.
The contact owns a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban. While driving 5 mph, the abs activated without warning and the stopping distance increased. As of September 24, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle. The contact believed that the abs wheel sensor caused the failure. The manufacturer stated that his VIN was excluded from NHTSA campaign id number 05v379000 (service brakes, hydraulic: antilock). The current and failure mileages were 219,000.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban. The contact stated that the brakes were spongy and continued to feel weakened. The dealer replaced the sensor for the front anti-lock braking system five times to no avail. The contact stated that the anti-lock braking systems would independently engage at low speed and the brakes would feel shaky. The dealer was unable to provide a cause for the failure. The failure mileage was 37,520 and the current mileage was 80,000.

1999 Chevrolet Suburban customer states that traffic came to a complete stop and after applying brakes to stop the anti lock brakes came on almost causing a accident* the dealer informed the consumer there were many customers having the same problems with their cars and provided her with a copy of the recall. The consumer then contacted acton to have the car put through a diagnostic test and they came back with a passenger wheel hub. The mechanic stated there was a lot of play in the tire, it was moving side to side. The consumer took the vehicle back to regular mechanic who could not remove the hub. The consumer was informed by her regular mechanic that the bearing and sensor was the problem. The consumer wants to be reimbursed for repairs and also has a service campaign bulletin which she feels relates to her defect.

: the contact stated while driving 10 mph or less the abs activated. The independent repair shop determined the abs sensor and hub needed to be replaced. There is a NHTSA recall, # 05v379000, regarding the abs. The vehicle had the same problems as indicated in the recall; however it is not included in the recall due to the VIN. Updated 03/17/06.
2000 chevy Suburban. Anti-lock brakes activating under dry normal conditions causing longer stopping distances. Investigated NHTSA website and found future recall notice relating to this condition. Presented vehicle to dealer to fix problem. Dealer performed recommended fix, but this did not remedy condition, in fact it may have exacerbated the problem. Dealers only recommended solution was to replace the front wheel hubs containing the anti-lock sensors at a cost of $850. Dealer indicated that it has had to replaced numerous hubs for the exact same problem on theses vehicles and that chevy has not taken responsibility for any of these services under warranty or recall status.
Abs brake system on the front driver's side wheel began having failures at very low speeds(under 10 mph) when the vehicle(1998 Chevrolet tahoe) was coming to a full stop at the end of the drive or when pulling to a stop. This was occurring over & over more more than a month. I contacted white-allen chevolet in dayton ohio and the service manager contacted the gm zone manager and gm would not warranty this repair saying that my vehicle did not fall under the recall years for this problem even though the problem was exactly the same as the recall issued for the same vehicle 1999-2002 ( mine is 1998). I finally had to have it done strictly because of my children's safety the day I made the appointment my daughter and I almost glided into traffic coming to a stop while taking her to school. The zone manager response to our claim was that my vehicle was not part of the recall and they will not have the repairs done as part of the recall even though the failure is the same defect according to the service manager. Service was supplied on 9/26/2005 at white-allen service order reads "checked abs system right front sensor failure due to low voltage output action taken : replaced left front hub and bearing parts: owner has the old replaced parts.
Anti lock brakes unexpectedly activate at low speed causing increase in stopping distance on dry pavement. Dealer replaced left wheel hub and anti-lock sensor at a cost to me of $500. Vehicle is a 2002 with 40,000 miles.
At low speeds when pressing the brakes the abs brakes on my 2002 chevy Suburban pump and allow the veichle to move forward. Have had two occassions were this almost caused an accident. Dealer parkway motors calumet michigan determined it was corrosion on the abs sensors. They told me they first reported the problem to gm engineering 3 years ago and currently the see almost one of these problems a day.
2001 chevy Suburban; abs activates at low speed. Taken to grossinger chevy for repairs on 11/23/05. Abs sensors replaced and fr rotors turned to remove corrosion which triggers sensors. Problem still persists; returned vehicle to dealer. Fr rotors turned again since small corrosion spot still evident. Now rotors at minimum thickness. Problem resolved - no charge for 2nd visit. Total repairs billed at 525. 76+tax.
The consumer complained about abs brakes kicking in at low speeds. The service brakes and abs will not hold when the abs kicks in. The problem has been on going since November of 2004. The dealership cleaned and greased the brakes. They machined the rotors and replaced the left upper arm bushing. And they checked the abs sensors. The problem recurred. When she contacted them they said they could not find the cause of the problem. It started getting worse in July of 2005. She took vehicle to the dealership again. They replaced the sensor bushings and an idle arm. The problem is still occurring. She took it back to them. They replaced two rear drums, the sway bar bushings, the u joints, and t tightened the transfer case. However, the problem recurred. A recall for the 2000 models was issued. When she contacted the manufacturer, they said that this model year vehicle was not included in the recall. The contact had to have the service brakes replaced before. The dealership replaced the rotors and the pads. The contact felt that it was a result of normal wear and tear. .
Abs brake sensor malfunction.
The contact states when he applied the brakes the abs activated. This happened at lower speeds when the brakes were applied. On one occasion he panic braked and the vehicle would not stop. This resulted in the contact's vehicle hitting another vehicle. There was a recall for this type of vehicle, but the manufacturer said this vehicle was not included in the recall. The service dealer cleaned the abs sensors after the accident occurred. He assumed this was a safety problem. This corrected the problem.
The contact stated there was NHTSA recall 05v379000 for the abs system, but this vehicle was not included in the recall although the vehicle is experienced the same problems as indicated in the recall. The service dealer said it was the abs sensor that caused the problems. The dealer confirmed the problem was due to corrosion built up on the abs sensor.
The contact owns a 1997 Chevrolet Suburban. She received recall 05v379000 notice for a 2001 Chevrolet silverado regarding the abs system. The contact stated that the 1997 Chevrolet Suburban is experienced the same abs brake problem as indicated in the recall. When the brakes were applied it seemed as if the abs system was kicking in, and there was extended stopping distance. It did not matter what the road conditions were this would happen even on dry roads. The service dealer did stated that the sensor in the vehicle needed to be replaced. The manufacturer has not been contacted.

When applying brakes at any speed brake pedal springs back, resists. Dealer first replaced brake lines, then determined that problem was a defective brake sensor on the right front wheel.
2001 chevy Suburban 1500 lt, abs problem. Recurrence of failure of abs pump to deactivate. Pump runs continuously until it burns up. Replaced previously (not under warranty). Over $1000. At this time the abs fuse is pulled so pump won't burn up again, but I have no antilock brakes. Apparently a sensor or something is failing and causing an expensive repair.
