1 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/12/2020

Lost all brake fluid in the reservoir, brake line leaked all of the fluid out, I did not have any breaks, awful time trying to stop. The mechanic informed, it happens a lot with Suburbans.

2 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/18/2019

When driving my 2002 Chevrolet Suburban 1500 at speeds under 10 mph in bumper-to-bumper traffic, the abs independently activated. This happened in dry weather on a freeway. When the abs independently activated, the car vibrated and accelerated with difficulty and jerked. The brakes locked up, causing a tire to blow out. The car caught fire where the brakes had locked up the front right wheel. The fire commander who examined the car after putting out the fire and the mechanic who is repairing the car both explained that improper abs activation led to a rupture in the brake line, exposing the leaking brake fluid to the heat generated by the locked brakes. This vehicle is experiencing the same problems as indicated in NHTSA recall 05v379000 concerning the abs system but is not included in the recall due to the VIN. The car had been taken to a gm dealer two months earlier (in July) with a complaint about the same problems with the abs system. The gm dealer did not mention the recall but made extensive (and expensive) repairs to the car. The car experienced the same problem again in September, when it led to the fire. This was not enough time or the right season for the abs to deteriorate from salt exposure since the July repairs. My car is probably excluded from the recall because it is registered in virginia. It should have been included because the car is registered in fairfax county, virginia, less than 15 miles from washington, d. C. And maryland. Fairfax county is further north than many parts of maryland and west virginia. The region has the same weather conditions, length of winter season, and exposure to salt as washington, d. C. , west virginia, and maryland, which are included in the recall. Residents of the area frequently drive in these states, particularly in washington, d. C. And maryland, where many virginia residents work, shop, and seek entertainment.

3 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/23/2019

While sitting at the mailbox checking mail and pressing on the brakes firmly, the brake pedal suddenly went to the floor and the warning lights flashed red repeatedly saying to check the brake system. The brake fluid was leaking all over the place. Fortunately there was enough braking ability left to park the vehicle in the driveway. Also, I am thankful this did not happen on the highway.

4 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/06/2018

The 2005 Chevrolet Suburban 2500 was traveling on a city street and the brakes became soft instantly, a collision was avoided by steering away from the cars at the intersection and the emergency brake was used. There was no warning on the sudden failure, other than a indicator on the dash. A short drive to the home driveway, the remaining brake fluid has all leaked out under the drivers door location.

5 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/13/2018

Brake lines rusting. Twice in a month the brakes failed after a hard stop at a traffic light. Lucky for me & others there were no cars in front of me or trying to cross the intersection. After applying the brake hard to stop, the brake pedal continued all the way to the floor and the car did not stop. The mechanic told me that the brake lines rusted and therefore the brake fluid leaked out of the system.

6 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/15/2017

The brake fluid lines rusted at the area under the driver side wheel, causing the fluid to leak unexpectedly, thus rendering no brakes. The leak happened on my vehicle and another in this same area. The mechanic said there could be is a problem in the manufacturing of the lines due to the construction and because its too close to the wheel salt and road conditions causes this area to rust more easily. He's had a number of chevy sub. With this same problem in for repair/replacement.

7 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/17/2017

Brake lines rusted and leaking. Brake line to the rear brakes leaking on drivers side about as far back as rear door latch, about half way back of the gas tank. Brake pedal will go to the floor with minimal stopping ability and brake fluid leaks.

8 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/24/2016

Had my truck looked at by all american Chevrolet in 2014 after I read your article a couple of years ago, and while they said the lines looked rusty underneath the truck, things looked ok. The gm exec adam adler was estimating a $500 repair cost, and figured it was no big deal when I eventually got to that point. I also read that gm said if a problem occured I'd not lose braking because it was a double system, and that I would also get an indictation on the dash of a problem. Sadly over the christmas holiday 2016, I experienced a total brake line failure, and luckily no one was hurt. The repair was not the $500 estimated by gm it was over $2,000. ". . G. M. Does not comment on other automakers recalls, alan adler, a spokesman for g. M. , wrote in an email. Adam adler gm added that general motors had developed a parts kit last year for the brake lines. . . " these are available through dealers and the aftermarket, he said. based on time studies, the repair including labor should cost about $500. We can only suggest how much labor time the repair should take. I also received no warning on the dash of the truck when the lines failed, and the fluid was pouring onto the road, I could see a trail of it behind the car. Luckily I had kept the emergency brake well maintained and I downshifted the truck to stop and had it towed by aaa to the shop. Can we talk about this or who at gm should I speak with? when the brakes failed I needed to get the truck repaired right away and the cost was over $2200. 732-310-2520 stephen w smith.

9 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/20/2016

Brake line (hard line) catastrophic failure. Unable to stop on coming to highway intersection using hydraulic brakes. Had to resort to applying parking brake to stop vehicle. On inspection main brake hydraulic line ruptured- fluid spewed on roadway and approximately 1/2 of fluid from master cylinder. Limited residual pressure from secondary was unable to stop vehicle without mechanical assist from parking brake.

10 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 05/08/2016

Wife was driving the truck with her mother, went to stop and the brake pedal went to the floor - limped the truck home - checked master cylinder, added fluid and when we pushed the pedal, fluid came pouring out the corroded rear brake line - while no one was hurt this time, it is easy to imagine how it could otherwise been a disaster.

11 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 02/05/2016

Rusted brake lines to rear driver wheel leaks fluid resulting in vehicle not able to stop. Collision nearly occurred as result of loss of braking.

12 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/30/2015

As I was about to exit a parking lot onto a four lane roadway, the brakes on my 2005 Chevrolet Suburban failed. I lived approximately 1/2 mile from this location and proceeded to drive home. It was a little scarey without any stopping power, even the emergency bake would not hold. When I got home, I used a flashlight to try to find the source of the problem. Found a pattern of brake fluid leaking. Removed the spare tire to get a better look and found a brake line between the abs and rear of the vehicle had rusted out. From the looks of the line condition, they need to be all replaced. Never in my 70 years have I seen brake lines on a ten year old vehicle look like they did, really in bad shape. Looked at other lines, fuel, transmission, they all looked like they should be replaced.

13 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/13/2015

Backing out of a parking space went to stop and brake pedal sunk to the floor abs and brake light came on I put the truck in park opened the hood the master cylinder had fluid then looked under the truck and under the drivers side door brake fluid was leaking from 1 of the 2 steel rusted lines had the truck towed to a repair shop the shop said the 2 lines from the master cylinder to the abs block had severe corrosion and the rest of the brake lines aren't much better im sorry guys but this is a serious problem to me I could have been killed or killed someone else im one of the lucky ones I guess so now the truck is in the shop having all the brake lines changed for a cost of $ 600. 00 and guess what we also own a 2003 tahoe with 90000 miles on it I guess they will have to be changed also same condition all brake lines rusted badly how many people must be seriously injured or killed before something is done about this problem its wide spread look on line how many people have gone through this its a shame make g. M do the right thing here.

14 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/11/2015

Brake lines rusted through and leaked fluid from system.

15 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/06/2015

Complete break failure. Break pedal went to floor and almost killed my family. Noticed leaking break fluid coming out of rusted break line under vehicle.

16 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/02/2015

While driving at 30 miles per hour applied the brakes and brake pedal became soft and went to the floor. The vehicle barely came to a stop before I hit anything. No warning lights or messages appeared before this happened. Found brake fluid leaking from rusted metal tubing on frame just behind driver's side front wheel.

17 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 1999 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/08/2015

While traveling at very slow speeds, I have noticed that the vehicle takes longer than usual to stop. When I apply the brakes the vehicle will continue to move before coming to a complete stop. Brakes are in good condition, brake fluid is at the right level and it is not leaking any brkae fluid at all. The vehicle takes longer to stop and could cause an accident if not inspected by manufacturer. Request a one time inspection on barake system on this model and any other model that uses the same brake/parts for braking systems. There is a NHTSA recall # 05v379000 pertaining to the hydraulic antilock brakes, howver some VIN#s are not included in this recall even though my vehicle is experiencing the same symptoms and seem to get worse.

18 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 04/10/2015

While applying my brakes on highway rout 87, near albany NY, the pedal went to the floor and we crashed into the car in front of us. After being towed to a aaa repair facility they told us that the brakes were fine but the steel brake line had blown out and the fluid had leaked causing loss of stoping power without any warning. . . We spent $890. 00 plus a hotel room for one night as we waited for them to make a repair to one brake line. I recently found out all the brake lines are rotted out and need to be replaced. This makes no sense. . . . . There is a clear safety issue here. Please reopen the case and advise a recall before a big SUV like ours hurts someone in a small car because there brake lines failed. They won't know until its to late!!!.

19 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 03/07/2015

I was pulling into my driveway at approximately 15 miles per hour. My brake pedal went all the way to the floor and two of my dash lights illuminated (t/c (traction control), and brake light, also had the readout "service brake system". Luckily, I was rolling to a stop in my own driveway and avoided hitting my other parked cars. I inspected the brake system and found that brake fluid was leaking between the abs unit and the driver side rear tire (more specifically near the fuel tank) from the metal brake line. The brake reservoir was half full of brake fluid and completely drained within ten minutes of just sitting in my driveway . I inspected from what I could see concerning the underside metal brake lines; all brake lines are rusted and brittle and will need replaced.

20 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/28/2014

I took the vehicle to local Chevrolet dealer for oil change and yearly state inspection. The vehicle passed the state inspection/emissions control test. I was not notified that there were any issues concerning the vehicle. The vehicle was driven 5 miles to home. Two days, started the car, but had no brakes. The brake pedal went to the floor. A warning light was on. There were puddles of brake fluid in the driveway. I had the vehicle towed back to the dealer. They informed me that te brakeline had completely corroded. The cost for repair was quoted at $800. From what I understand, this sudden and complete brake failure could have occurred at any time, even while driving the vehicle.

21 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/16/2014

Was driving behind a school bus when it stopped to let kids off. I applied my brakes and the pedal went to the floor. I had no brakes, I am not really sure how I managed to stop without hitting the bus. I pulled over in a parking lot. Got out of my 2003 chevy Suburban went into the bank to call my husband to come get me. By the time I got back out to my truck there was a puddle of brake fluid under the drivers side door. My brake lines where shoot.

22 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 12/12/2014

Applied brakes and had to press almost to the floor. Once stopped, the vehicle would start to roll again unless I applied further pressure on the brakes. I drove the vehicle home and the next morning there was a puddle of break fluid under the car.

23 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 11/11/2014

Loss of breaks. The hydraulic break lines failed and leaked brake fluid. The brake system suffered a loss of loss hydraulic pressure. The break lines showed heavy corrosion. Corrosion caused the hydraulic brake lines to fail.

24 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/09/2014

While transiting the parking lot at the end of the work day last Thursday, I was approaching the street entrance when I attempted to slow my vehicle. When I pressed the brake peddle, I encountered normal braking resistance for about a half second before resistance stopped and the peddle floored. I pumped the peddle several times to attempt to build pressure in order to stop the vehicle. This was unsuccessful. I abandoned the hydraulic braking system and deployed the parking/emergency brake in order to stop the vehicle before entering rush hour traffic on the cross street. The parking brake system was able to stop the vehicle before it entered traffic. There were no accident or injuries. The hydraulic braking system appeared to have suffered a sudden and complete failure without any warning. In fact, the "brake system failure" indicator light did not come on until several minutes after the vehicle had come to a complete stop. On site inspection showed rusted brake lines and no brake fluid in the master cylinder reservoirs. There were large puddles of brake fluid on the ground at both the left front and left rear wheels and a trail of brake fluid leading back up the parking lot. There was also a small puddle of brake fluid by the right rear wheel. The mechanic at the dealership, where I purchased the vehicle new, confirms that one brake line ruptured due to corrosion and that the others were also corroded and should be replaced. Please note: this vehicle was purchased in and has been continuously garaged in central virginia and has never been operated for significant periods of time in traditional "salt belt" states or in marine environments which would accelerate corrosion. Were "stainless" or corrosion resistant alloys mandated or used in these brake lines?.

25 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 10/07/2014

While driving in heavy morning rush hour traffic on a northern virginia interstate, brakes were applied for typical traffic slowdown. After releasing the brake, the warning light alerting driver of a brake issue came on. At that point, I tested the brake and the peddle sunk to the floor while quickly loosing braking resistance. I was able to pull over and stop the vehicle within about a mile. Looked underneath the drivers side and saw brake fluid leaking/dripping out of the brake line which was ruptured. Had to call a tow truck to take this to a shop for replacement of all of the brake lines. All of the lines were corroded. Checked online and saw that this was a "typical" issue affecting 2004 chevy Suburbans but that a product recall was not issued yet. I was thankful that this did not happen the previous day when my 16 yr old daughter drove the car to school.

26 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/27/2014

Driving down highway coming to red light depressed brake pedal, pedal went all the way to the floor. Could not stop vehicle before going through red light, held down vehicle horn to warn other drivers which saved me from injuring/killing someone else or myself. After getting vehicle on shoulder of road noticed brake fluid dripping down the frame rail on the drivers side in front of rear tire.

27 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 09/26/2014

While approaching exit ramp in delaware (exit 1a) traffic slowed so I began to hit my brakes to slow and all of a sudden the brake pedal hit the floor and I could not stop I almost hit the vehicle in front of me with the exception of fast maneuvering of which my dash cam caught, I swerved to the left lane to avoid a collision then hit the emergency brakes and got back into the off ramp then I realized that there was no break pressure and smoke bellowing from under the hood of my vehicle I pulled over to inspect and notice brake fluid leaking. I took the vehicle to national tire and battery where they informed me that I had a double front brake line rupture - I am having them replace (a $1000 job) however I've asked to retain the brake lines as proof.

28 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/31/2014

The brakes on my 2003 Suburban failed suddenly with no warning as I was taking the exit ramp off the interstate near my house. I brake sharply when a vehicle cut in front of me from the right travel lane into the exit lane, and the brake pedal suddenly went all the way to the floor. At the moment that happened, the instrument panel chimed continuously and displayed "service brake system". The truck seemed to have no braking power whatsoever, and I had to slow the truck using the emergency brake. I had just driven around 55 miles in heavy traffic on I-95 and the beltway, with traffic often slowing, speeding up, then slowing again, then speeding up again. If this brake failure had occurred then, instead of on the slightly uphill exit ramp off I-66 1/2 mile from my house, it likely would have resulted in a serious crash. After I got the truck home, I saw fluid leaking from the brake line running under the driver's side door. A few days later, I spoke with a service rep at the dealer, who gave me a verbal estimate that replacing just that one brake line would cost around $500, and to replace all of them (which he recommended) would cost around $2000. I had the truck towed in a week or so later and had all of the lines replaced.

29 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/30/2014

On 8/30/14 I was driving down the road going about 25 mph when a car came out from a street on the left side and pulled in front of me without looking, I pressed down on the brakes quick and swerved to the right to avoid hitting him, he had no idea as I was swerving out of the way to not hit him, he was making his turn, I got on the horn and he just pulled over to the right and gave me a wave as to say he was sorry. Anyway, when I pressed down on the brake fast, it went all the way to the floor, I had total brake failure, all the brake fluid leaked out from the driver's side near the chassis, there was no stopping this truck. I don't see how they can say you are still able to use the brakes, you can't pump them. It is now sitting at the mechanics getting fixed, so far he told me it would be $600-$800 labor, I have not gotten back the truck yet as I write this. The brake lines were so rotted, it was only a matter of time, and I only bought this 9/17/13, the truck originally came from pennsylvania.

30 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/23/2014

I was backing up my Suburban to attach and move my camper. I had just returned from a short trip to the grocery store, brakes were fine at that time. Upon the 3rd or 4th time I pressed the brake pedal while backing up, the pedal went to the floor. No brakes. I was on fairly level ground, so moving it to park stopped what little motion I had. There was never an indication of spongy brakes. Never an indicator on my dash of a brake issue, I just immediately lost all braking function. At this time it's Sunday and I'm waiting on Monday to contact a mechanic. I have fluid leaking from above the side frame member on the drivers side, under the rear door on the passenger side. I still don't have an indication of failure on my dash. I realize cars rust, I live in michigan. But the failure is what disturbs me. Supposedly gm has a dual line system, but I had no or very little stopping power on a 6000lb vehicle. Had I been in motion or even towing my camper, the results could have been catastrophic. I understand there is an investigation still open on these vehicles. It is not terribly time sensitive that this vehicle get fixed, so if you'd like to inspect I'll need contact immediately. Otherwise I will get it to a mechanic for repair.

31 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/23/2014

Driving approx 50 mph on 4 lane highway. When slowing for red light ahead, noticed brake pedal going closer to floor than normal. Vehicle was not slowing as normal, and brake pedal was staying close to the floor. Got stopped and pulled to side of road. Check of master cylinder revealed brake fluid level to be approx. Half full. Upon checking under vehicle, I saw brake fluid pouring out from the gas tank shield.

32 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 08/02/2014

I was sitting in my driveway and I pressed on the brake to engage reverse when the brake pedal went all the way to the floor. This is not a normal braking for our Suburban. Brake fluid was added to the brake fluid compartment and brakes were re-tested; brake pedal continued to go to floor. Further investigation of the vehicle outside the Suburban found brake fluid leaking from brake line when brake pedal was engaged.

33 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2000 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/20/2014

We bought our 2000 Suburban in 2002 with only 3000 miles . This was a secret service fleet vehicle with hardly any miles on it . We have had this vehicle to date with only 88,727miles on it. Last summer after pulling our 31 foot camper back from vacation I noticed that I was leaking brake fluid in our drive way. I was glad that we made it home with no incident. We have not used the truck sense that time . I looked under the truck only to see all my brake lines corroded and leaking. They offer aftermarket brakes in stainless steel lines. Why don't all the automotive companies put the stainless lines on there vehicles. It can't be that much more for peace of mind. I would also like to say I have a 1996 chevy tahoe that I bought brand new and has 132000 miles on it with brake lines that don't leak. I can tell , and show anyone that gm used an inferior metal for brake lines at least in my 2000 Suburban.

34 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 07/04/2014

While driving down hill the light at the bottom of the hill turned red. I stepped on the brakes, heard a pop and hissing noise and the brake pedal went to the floor. The truck was slowing but not by much. I pulled it into low gear and blew the horn. The car sitting at the light took notice and pulled out of the way and I was able to go around the corner onto level ground and stop the truck. When I opened the door brake fluid was pouring out on the ground. There was no warning of the failure and the truck has been gm dealer serviced including brakes.

35 Brake Fluid Leak problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Suburban

Failure Date: 06/26/2014

I had the vehicle in park, on a hill, and when I shifted it into drive, felt a pop in the pedal. Then the brakes would not hold the vehicle. I had a very difficult time stoppinf the vehicle due to the loss of brake pressure. The brakes pedal would just fall to the floor. My husband came out and found one of the rear brake lines was rusted and leaking fluid. The brake lines have visible rust on the outside of them.
