Defective fuel level sensor provides erroneous data to fuel gauge resulting in gauge showing more fuel available than actually in the tank. Hazard of leaving motorists stranded in remote or unsafe locations/conditions, or of running out of fuel during vehicle operation. Chevrolet has identified the problem as a faulty fuel level sensor/fuel strainer and documented the problem by corporate bulletin 04-06-04-012c but is not offering repair of the problem for out of warranty vehicles.

Once the fuel gauge reached the half way mark it would suddenly drop and register an empty reading. The contact called the dealer and was told that this was a common problem. Caller says vehicle stalled. The lights on the dashbord came on and the vehicle died. This has happened 6 times, she did not know when it will happen. It stalled at any speed and under any condition. Dealer and manufacturer have not been contacted yet. The caller said the gas gauge malfunctioned, and there was a recall on other years of model. The gas gauge would show full and go down to empty and back up to full, now it will not move at all.

Fuel gauge was defective. When the tank was full it registered half, and when it was half it registered empty. . Consumer ran out of gas twice. Manufacturer stated no complaints or recalls on this matter were found.

Consumer noticed that whenever putting gasoline into the gas tank to the full level, and then driving vehicle it becomes half full, but fuel gauge indicates full without the consumer adding gas to the tank.
Consumer stated fuel gage was not working properly. Sometimes when filling vehicle up, fuel gage showed empty. At other times when the vehicle was empty the fuel gauge showed full. Also, it was hard to tell when vehicle needed fuel. Consumer had spoken with other Suburban owners and they were having the same problem. Consumer felt this is was a design defect with these vehicles.
