On 9/23/12 while changing a flat, it was discovered that the spare tire has rubbing on the side walls. The spare tire has never been used as we just bought the vehicle new. Brought this to the attention of the dealership on 9/24/12 as to how we should secure the spare without causing rubbing again. They advised they would look into it and call us back. Still have not heard anything. Concerned with continued rubbing on the side walls if we should ever need to use the spare again as it can blow out.

I was driving my vehicle and had a flat tire. I could not get my spare tire to come down as it was seized under th back of the vehicle. I had a repair shop fix it and they advised me this is common on all general motor vehicles that salt get inside them and rusts out the spare tire hoist unit making it impossible to get the tire down. I am concerned as it could have happened to my wife and kids on a cold night. After looking online this is a major problem that most people do not realize until they get stranded with a flat tire.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Suburban 1500. The contact stated that the spare tire housing unit was defective which made it impossible to remove the spare tire when he needed it. The dealer advised her to notify the manufacturer who stated that they would reimburse her for the repairs. The vehicle was repaired; however, the spare tire housing malfunction has reoccurred. The manufacterer stated that they would not reimburse her to have the housing unit repaired again. The failure mileage was 120,000.
I had a flat tire on a 2004 chevy Suburban. After about 1 hour of trying, I was not able to release the spare tire hoist on the vehicle. Since I could not access the spare tire, I had to call for a tow truck. The tow truck driver also could not get the spare tire to release from the vehicle. The vehicle had to be towed to the dealer. The dealer had to replace the "bad" hoist. This was the first time I tried to use the spare hoist since the vehicle was purchased. The dealer said that this is a common failure and the tow truck driver agreed. The dealer also said it was my fault for abusing the hoist (driving on dirt roads) and not properly servicing the hoist. No where in the owner's manual does it talk about spare tire hoist maintenance. The total cost for a flat tire was over $400 and 7 hours of my time.
On December 28, 2005, I was driving south on interstate 95 in southern south carolina near walterboro when a bf goodrich tire on the left rear of my 1999 Chevrolet Suburban suddenly disintegrated into fragments while I was driving. Before I left on my trip to florida, I had the tires on my vehicle rotated and balanced. All of the tires appeared to be in good condition. . . With deep tread. Bf goodrich has informed me that the tire in question was sold to gm as a spare tire for the vehicle when it was new in 1999. The tire was exactly the same type of tire as the others and was marked exactly the same way. I placed the tire on the vehicle to use in November of 2003. Since that time, the tire has been in use for approximately 24,000 miles.
The firestone tire (steeltex a/t; 245 75r16) that blew out on my Suburban was brand new. It was my spare tire. I drove on it approximately 20 miles when an approximately 6 inch square piece of the sidewall blew out for no apparent reason. In light of all the recent problems with firestone tires and recent news report that this particular tire is under investigation, I felt it was important to report this tire failure. (tiresize: 245 75r16)( dot number: tire size: 245 75r16 ).
On the three separate occasions, I felt vibrations that seemed like a loose wheel and immediately stopped my vehicle. On one occasion, the left rear tire tread separated from the steel and was half gone around the tire. On the two other occasions, I could feel the same vibration and when stopping, I could see the tread separation from the steel belt in the form of large bumps completely around the tires. I attribute my safely stopping to 35 years of trained professional driving and always being conscientious of any unusual vehicle sounds and actions. Each time the tires were replaced by the same firestone dealer. A prorated charge was made on each tire and the dealer denied any manufacturing problems with the tires and my tires were just flukes. I took the fourth tire off the vehicle and placed it inside as a spare tire with 26,000 miles on it, fearing it would too separate. Had these incidents occurred when either my wife or daughters had been driving the Suburban, I believe that their lives could have been endangered. If you wish examine the fourth original tire or any of the replacement tires, feel free to contact me. I believe that these 16-inch tires, due to my experience, are just as likely to fail as the 15-inch tires. ( dot number: sp872kr03l tire size: lt24575r16 ).
