Smell of fuel for about a week brought it to evans automotive st Aug. Fl. 32080. They contacted me and told me flaw in design of tank water gets up on top of tank and sits there. This rots out sending unit and fuel pump as well as locking studs that hold down this one piece unit. Tank is plastic but studs that lock in part are metal they rot making tank very very dangerous. They said I was very lucky the truck did not catch fire with my family and I in it. They said the smallest spark would have caused the truck to catch fire. To repair this it is going to run about 1500. 00. Or try to find a used tank in good shape. They are telling me weather new or used this is going to happen again over time. The flaw is that there is no way for water to get out of bowl shape where fuel pump is. That makes it very dangerous. When looking for tank it says tank from 2003 to 2009 fit. That means other trucks have same problem such as chev,GMC,pickups, searria, silverdos, youkon ect. . . . . . . . Please look into this before someone or some family gets killed. Thank you!!!!!.

This complaint is for a 2005 mastercraft x-2 boat not a chevy Tahoe. There is no option to choose boat manufacturers on this website. Chevy makes the indymar 350 on this boat and is the closest option representing this boat available. The events leading up to the failure are either running the gas tank down to 1/4 tank full or running the gas tank empty. The failure can occur upon the first instance of running the tank to 1/4 full as I have documented proof of a boat owner with 3 hours on his boat have a failure. To correct the failure boat owners have to pay $500 for the same poorly designed pumped which is subject to failure and stranding the boat owner once again in open water at unexpected times (often at the end of their boating day which is dangerous because it is usually dark or beginning to become dark). Unless of course it is within 2 years of purchasing a new boat in which case your still stranded but the dealer warranties the pump work installing another faulty fuel pump. Here is a forum where the issues can be discussed and specific reports reviewed. . Read more...

The contact owns a 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe. While parked in the garage, the vehicle suddenly caught fire. The fire department investigated and stated that the fire originated from underneath the hood. They also advised her to not move the vehicle until it has been inspected by the dealer. A police report was filed and two people sustained injuries. She believes the fuel pump caused the failure because the explosion was very large. The VIN, engine size, and number of cylinders were unknown. The current and failure mileages were 11,700.

Gas gauge had been broken for several years took to the dealership and was told that there have been reported problems with this happening but no recall had been issued after severl years my brother bought a new fuel pump and filter and fixed the problem or at least I hope it is fixed. Abs/ brake light has also been coming on and off I have also taken it to dealership for this problem about a year ago and was told that it is just the sensor not to worry about it brakes will be fine or I could always take out the fuse so light will stay off which I have not done, so far lucky and no failure with brakes working.

I purchased a used 1997 Chevrolet Tahoe and since that time the fuel pump has gone out 5 times, once in April, June, September, twice in October and in November. The latest incident was on 12/06/06. I have yet to find a mechanic who can tell me the problem that I'm experiencing. The wiring seems to faulty is all I hear. Please help!!!!.
Car shut-off while driving down highway on Sunday, April 16th, 2006 with no forewarning. Other cars in the land could have very well collided with my vehicle. I took my vehicle to the valley stream, NY dealership for the 90,000 mile service check-up the next day. The told me they found nothing wrong. The following morning my car would not start. I searched the internet and discovered that there was a recall on this particular part causing the problem. Gm informed me that it did not pertain to my specific vehicle because the VIN # was not listed campaign number: 05v155000 date: 2005-Apr-14 component: fuel system, gasoline: delivery: fuel pump defect summary: certain trucks and sport utility vehicles were built with fuel module reservoir assemblies that contain fuel pump wires connectors may overheat under certain operating conditions. Consequence summary: if the ignition circuit wire is exposed, the fuel pump fuse will blow, disabling the fuel pump and causing an engine stall or no-start condition. If sufficient heat is conducted to the pass-through connector, a hole in the connector may result, which may cause a 'service engine soon' light to be illuminated during the emission system diagnostic routine. Fuel vapor and in some cases liquid fuel may leak out of the fuel tank through the hole in the connector body. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire. Also if the ignition circuit or ground wire is exposed and shorts to the fuel level sender card wires, inaccurate fuel level readings may result. Corrective summary: dealers will remove the fuel tank, and remove the module reservoir assemblies from the tank, and install a new service kit free of charge. An interim letter to owners was mailed on may 25, 2005. The owners were re-notified on October 19, 2005, since parts are now available. Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438 and GMC at 1-866-996-9463.
I bought my used 2002 chevy Tahoe with only 29,000 miles. I have owned my vehicle less than 8 months and it has died (while I was driving) 4 times already. The 5th time this happened, the engine just wouldn't start. I hear the fuel pump is a common problem with GMC's however, at 50,000 this should not be happening. It's the fuel pump. Luckily, everytime my car stalled out, I wasn't in busy traffic. I don't want to know what I would have done had this happened if I was on the freeway. This is something GMC definitely has to look at.
Dt:the contact stated the fuel pump short circuited inside the fuel tank while driving at 70 mph and it lost power. He managed to pull the vehicle off the road without any power steering or power brakes. He found the fuse tha blew out and changed it. He was able to drive the vehicle home. Took the vehicle to a certified mechanic, the fuel pump was replaced at contact's cost. He contacted the manufacturer, and there was recall, but did not include this year, make and model.

My 3003 chevy Tahoe fuel pump failed vehicle still under warranty. However with 29000 plus miles and after talking to mechanic. Tech explained to me that fuel pump is cooled by gasoline in tank and said to me this is a common problem with newer chevys I believe this is a defect what happens to us that own vehicle. Out of warranty we broke down on rt 93 passing lane and could have been killed thank god for not! I truly believe this is a safety concern that should be looked into. Thank you.
My fuel pump failed and had to be replaced with less than 50,000 miles on the car. Symptom was that the car would not start. A fuel pump should last longer than 50,000 on a new car or truck. I think the original pump was defective or there is a design flaw.
The consumer stated that the vehicle stalled, and the fuel gauge did not work properly. While sitting at a stop sign the vehicle stalled. This happened only once. The fuel gage had not been working properly for about eight months. Nhtsa recall campaign# 05v155000 concerning fuel pump failure was issued. The aforementioned symptoms were typical for faulty fuel pump wiring. The vehicle had not been inspected by the dealer. The consumer made contact by phone with both the dealer and manufacturer in an attempt to obtain recall repairs. The consumer's request was denied because this vehicle was not included in the recall due to VIN. (12/02/05).
I have the same issue listed campaign id 05v155000 on a 2002 Tahoe. I spoke with chris lash, safety defects engineer with you last year in November. Today, I see gm has recalled several vehicles about this problem but I am not included on this list although I have had the exact same issue with the fuel pump failure. My VIN is 1gnek13zx2r314115. Please let me know what I can do to assist in this effort. Gm is non-responsive about this issue.
Fuel pump failure on 2002 Tahoe vehicle. The vehicle would lose power at any speed with no warning.
While driving vehicle was cut off. Consumer had to coast to the side of the road. Then, vehicle was towed. The fuel pump was found to be defective.
The vehicle is a 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe z71 four-wheel drive. The intermediate shaft shakes and rattles to the point of having slack in it. He took vehicle to the dealer and they greased it. The second time they greased it again. The third time the dealership replaced the intermediate shaft because it was on a recall. Consumer had to wait a year before they could get the replacement part. The problem has returned even after the part was replaced. The problem was in the same area but, the noise was a little different and it was making a knocking sound. Consumer believed that it may be in the front end differential. Consumer has not contacted the dealership. Also, fuel pump failed. Dealership replaced the fuel pump. There were other problems, but consumer felt they were minor.
While driving at 70 mph vehicle stalled in the middle of the highway. Dealer examined the vehicle and determined that the fuel pump was defective.

2000 Chevrolet Tahoe . The car would back fire through the fuel injection. The fuel pump has been replaced three times. The car was bought less than 2 years ago.
Engine starts and dies out. Sent Tahoe to service 3 times. First problem occurred on 2-16-04. Second problem on 3-16-04, and returned on 3-18-04. Picked up vehicle and on the next morning, the vehicle would not start again. When picked up on the third attempt for repair, service department said it is okay to drive car, they had done a temporary fix ,and we needed to keep 1/2 tank of gas until general motors created a new fuel pump. Vehicle still not fully repaired.
The contact stated the fuel pump malfunctioned twice. This happened while accelerating. The first time he was passing on a two lane road and the vehicle would not accelerate. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, and they replaced the fuel pump under warranty. This happened again approximately two years later. The vehicle had to sit for a while then it started up. The vehicle only went 20 mph when the fuel pump failed. The fuel pump has been replaced a second time.
After fueling vehicle and driving short distance, then parking on front-end-down slope, a large amount of fuel (apx 1 gallon) began dripping on ground from top of fuel tank. I turned vehicle around so front of tank was higher than rear of tank and dripping slowed and stopped. Mechanic said fuel pump assembly on top of fuel tank was leaking. Mechanic now in process of replacing fuel pump, and will give me old pump. Mehcanic said possible cause that he has seen before is due to corrosion, however, vehicle has been operated at all times in arid, dry desert temperature that is not conducive to vehicle corrosion.
1996 Chevrolet Tahoe 2 wheel drive 4 door 5. 7 vortec fuel pump failure. I have replaced the fuel pump assembly 3 times in the last 45,000 miles(4 months)the wiring connector to the pump gets hot and melts the wires inside the pump the last one had melted the wire bare inside the tank. The pump still works but the pump assembly is unusable due to melting of the housing and resulting leakage.

When I had my 2003 Tahoe for only 6 months, my Tahoe stalled in the road and had to be towed to the dealer. Well, they fixed it and they said it was a defective fuel pump. I would like to know if this has happened with other similar vehicles. Also, I had to bring back my Tahoe to the dealer last week because of a thumping noise in the steering wheel and they said that the steering wheel shaft just needed some lubrication. My concern is that I only had this vehicle for 14 months with 15700 miles on it and I already have problems. Could my vehicle be a lemon? please research about other 2003 Tahoe's if they have had similar problems.
Regarding your defect investigation peo4042 fuel system, gasoline delivery, fuel pump, 2000 - 2001 Chevrolet suburban: complaint that fuel pump wiring overheats, resulting in engine stall and fuel leakage from the top of the tank: fyi, this is a common problem with all 1996 and newer Chevrolet / GMC gasoline engine trucks, all of which have the vortec engine series. This engine requires high fuel pump pressure (55 - 60 psi), which requires high electrical current for the pump, particularly under conditions of high fuel demand, such as towing (the circuit has a 20 amp fuse). Possible root causes of the problem may (1) inadequate wire gauge to the pump, causing a voltage drop and consequently high current draw; (2) high resistance at the fuel pump connector; (3) restricted fuel filter; (4) running the tank low on fuel; (5) increased frictional drag in the pump with high mileage. Unfortunately, there is no recommended "fix" other than to change the fuel filter often, keep the tank over 1/2 full, and replace the fuel pump every 30,000 miles ($600 repair at a gm dealer). I became aware of the problem when the fuel pump fuse blew in my 1999 Tahoe at 33,000 miles, stranding us in a remote part of montana. The cause was shorted wires at the fuel pump, requiring replacement of the pump. A search of the chevy truck owner's website (google) will show many owner complaints and suggested fixes for the problem.
Fuel pump failed on the highway, causing the vehicle to stop without warning. Mileage was only 33,100 at the time. I have searched a Chevrolet truck owners website (google alt. Trucks. Chevy - advanced search: fuel pump) and found many reports of fuel pump and/or fuel pump fuse failure in 1996-2001 chevy trucks. The typical failure seems to be melting of wires inside the pump, causing internal shorting, which was the failure in my vehicle. Failures were reported typically at 30,000-75,000 miles. Failure can be intermittant and difficult to diagnose. An additional cause of fuel pump fuse blowing is shorting of the oil pressure switch, which is in the fuel pump circuit. Repair was covered under my gm extended warranty, but would have otherwise cost approximately $700.
Whilst driving home from upstate NY to my home in NJ, the fuel pump on my Chevrolet Tahoe failed suddenly and catastrophically. I was driving at 65 mph at the time and with the failure of the pump, I lost all power, including steering and brakes. I very narrowly avoided an accident and other traffic. This was very scary and trying to steer and brake without power is not easy. This is the 3rd time that a fuel pump has failed on a Tahoe owned by myself, although the other 2 times the failure was while parked and not at high speed. My current car has 72,000 miles. The previous incidents were at approx the same mileage. Is this normal? have any other accidents been caused by sudden and catastrophic failure of Tahoe fuel pumps?.
I have a 2003 Tahoe Chevrolet I have taken it back on two occasions. For a check because when you try to crank vehicle, it hesitate to crank it try turn over the engine. They replaced the fuel pump then the next day it did the very same thing. . Do you a a complaint of this . . This has been happening since I purchase the vehicle.
My vehicle recently stalled several times. After the third time, I fortunately had it towed to my mechanic. He discovered the fuel pump wiring was heating up to the point it caused a bare line. His opinion was, I was very fortunate the vehicle stalled since the pump is located in the fuel tank and is a bomb waiting to explode. I noted multiple complaints have been filed. Are we awaiting another Ford escort situation before chevy needs to file a recall before some one dies? I have retained the pump should you wish to have an expert look at the situation.

Problem started at 21000 miles. Car either won't start or loses power while driving. I have had five fuel pumps since then. Now have 53k miles. Also, car won't start on incline even though it has 1/4 tank as verified by dealer service. Everything that can be "fixed" or replaced has been and I am still having starting problems and have to have a new fuel pump ever 3 months. Gm customer assistance unwilling to provide relief. Serviced only at dealers, they can't fix the problem.
The fuel pump was replaced three times the vehicle was just serviced again last week for a defective fuel pump. . . . . First replacement wa son 11/07/2002 at 21170 miles. It was covered 100% by warranty. Second replacement took place on 04/28/2004 at 50,790 miles. Parts were under warranty, consumer picked up labor costs, and third replacement wa son 02/04/2005 at 67, 275 miles. Warranty covered 50%, and consumer assumed 50% 0f labor cost.
While driving, vehicle shut off without warning caused by a connected to fuel pump melting through wire. . . .
