Total cost of repairs $665. 58. Safety recall TSB #98044, Aug. 98 "fuel tank" - may contact body sill. I don't know if this was ever corrected on my vehicle. I am the second owner. It is possible that this recall was the cause of the problems with my vehicle.

In 3 years we have replaced 6 fuel pumps. Replacements have ranged anywhere from 1 hour to 2 years. I paid for the first replacement but the 4 others were under warranty but not without a major battle with gm. The last and most current dealership will not pay for due to a 2 year time period had elapsed since last failure but did issue a $1000 coupon off our next vehicle.

Due to problems with fuel pump vehicle is not getting enough gas while driving. Cause unknown. Dealer notified.
Fuel pump stopped working and was replaced. Vehicle was driven another 1000 miles when the replacement fuel pump failed (Chevrolet fuel pump not after market). The wiring harness going to the fuel pump was melted and there were burn marks on the underside of the car. Mechanic stated the wiring harness was coming lose from the connection with the fuel pump and arcing to the vehicle underbody.
I have had the ps pump, steering gear box, fuel pump, 4wd switch, and all rotors/ brakes replaced. My sunroof rubber seal had to be replaced. All my work has been done by a gm dealership from north carolina, mo & wa. My vehicle has never been off road, it is more for looks. But I am not pleased with this $38,000 maintenance trap. I have all documented work and services.

Towed to priviate recommended mechanic. He was horrified to find the wire in the fuel pump had it's casing melted off due to the heat within the fuel pump. The fuel pump was half filled with fuel and the intense heat (such that the wire casing had melted) could have created a dangerous or fatal situation. I have tried to ask the company about recall or investigation of this problem but since my car was worked on by someone other than a dealer and/or my miles are over 60k, they will not talk to me. The atty general gave me your information to proceed. I would like to know that this problem is looked into and if recalled, would seek reimbursement. . Thank you. Brenda carey.
I recently purchased this vehicle from a used car dealer and I stopped on the way home to fill up the tank with gas and got a car wash. After ariving at my home I noticed a strong fuel odor. I checked under the vehicle and there was a significant amount of gas running off of the fuel tank and down the rear of the vehicle. The dealership picked up the vehicle and fixed it for me. They tell me that it was the fuel pump. I believe the leak was coming from the top of the tank, but I'm not convinced that it was the fuel pump. There was enough fuel that it was dangerous to drive in my opinion.
Vehicle's fuel pump has failed six times since new purchase once on expressway causing near fatal accident.
The pump on this vehicle has gone out 8 times with the most recent the24 of Dec the vehicle just dies or stops in traffic . It also leaves no codes in the computer . I have talked to other diesel owners who are also having problems with the diesel fuel pump . This is not unique to just Tahoe all the gm 6. 5 are affected , gm has sent out an extentsion of the warranty to 120000 on 1994-2000 vehicles w/ diesel engines yet we continue to replace the pump every 8000-15000 miles.
Vehicle stalled out due to a fire started by the fuel pump, which burnt through the gas tank. Wire going to fuel pump shorted out on frame causing fire resulting in damage to the vehicle.

While driving transmission began to slip and engine check light came on vehicle slowed down in highway traffic had to coast to nearest service station and had vehicle towed to dealership was told that transmission needed to be replaced. Also, fuel pump had failed simultaneously since incident fuel pump has been replaced 3 times and counting.
While vehicle was parked noticed fuel pump was leaking fuel. Took vehicle to dealership & was informed by mechanic that the top of fuel pump, the electrical connector, was causing it to leak. Problem was repairable.
Fuel pump electrical system failure. Not sure if it is a defect but alarming just the same. Wiring harness/connections on fuel pump and sending unit inside of fuel tank melted, overheated and burned. While this may be an isolated incident to my vehicle mechanics informed me that I was extremely lucky car did not catch on fire and tank ignite. .
While driving at about 35mph, engine lost power completely. Consumer says luckily they were able to make it to the other side of the road. With engine going had he been in a lot of traffic there could have been a serious accident. Also, fuel pump malfunctioned.
Feul pump extreme whining sound.
Fuel pump failed at high speeds, causing vehicle to cut off completely. Seal between the housing and the tank had to be replaced. Consumer stated that the fuel pump failed, while traveling on highway at 65 mph, when the engine shutdown without warning, the problem was traced to a gasket between the pump and housing that failed.
This vehicle has its fourth fuel pump installed and the fifth fuel pump is still in its box in the back , ready. The second fuel pump left my family in maryville, tenn. For three days because the Chevrolet dealership couldnt get a pump any sooner. I was told later by a gm serviceman that this was probably an engineering defect.
Fuel pump failure.
Fuel pump has failed 4 times previously. Fixed it myself this time after Chevrolet refused to pay for it. No problems since. Power steering assist is very jerky. Goes in and out without warning. Saw other complaints and decided I should report this one as well.
Fuel pump has been replaced 6 times since purchase. Mechanics at dealership mentioned to consumer that they replaced this component all the time, it was a defective part.
Fuel pump had to be replaced 4 times due to melting of wires within the assembly. Dealer can't find solution.
Vehicle was parked in garage & owner noticed fuel leaking from fuel pump. Took vehicle to dealership & was informed by mechanic that top of fuel pump's electrical connector was causing the leakage. Fuel leakage problem is repairable.
The fuel pump and fuel line failed without warning, while driving.
Fuel pump failed.
Windshield wipers work occasionally on high, but most of the time not when it is e fuel pump has had to be replaced two times and does not give a warning that it is going to to quit. The steering has a bad place in it a approx. 50mph going around a curve and will pull harder in to the curve, either there something wrong with parts to this truck or I have a lemon. I have spoke with others and their wipes do the same thing.
While traveling 35 mph and without any indication vehicle shutdown. Vehicle was serviced, and technician noticed fuel pump needed to be replaced. Please provide further information.
