Alternator/generator/regulator problems of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Seven problems related to alternator/generator/regulator have been reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/02/2017

Most of the gauges are very erratic when in motion or stopped. Tachometer jumps around, oil pressure reads all over, speedometer goes to zero or full scale, amp meter drops below 14 and lights dim when this happens, (have had the alternator replaced 3 times, this is quite a safety concern for me as I have no idea what to believe on any of the gauges. No repair shop has been able to solve the problem.

2 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Instrument panel gauges malfunction and show improper readings. For instance tachometer shows 5000 rpm at idle. Alternator gauge is off the scale. Temperature gauge is also showing false reading. Oil pressure gauge is also false. Incident date is approximate. Individual gauges failed over time.

3 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2008

This trail blazer has been a lemon every since I bought it. First two batteries kept swelling up and smoking and then it wouldn't start. I replaced the alternator. Then the motor threw a rod. I put another motor in it. Then the check engine light came on. I took it and had it put on a machine to check it out. It cannot be checked because the machine reads that the computer is dead. It stalls every now and then and gets horrible gas mileage. I replaced the gas cap but it didn't help. Now the transmission has went out of it. Previously it automatically locked the doors when it was running locking me out. There should be a recall on all these electric problems. I do not have any money to fix these problems yet I have 16 more months to pay on this truck. I've always bought Chevrolet's but I will never buy another one and so will a lot of other people. If they can't stand behind there vehicle's their no good for anything. All these different problems started at different dates. I also had to put a new exhaust system on it. I don't know how it is still running with the computer dead.

4 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2008

Headlights dim and flicker at random times, mostly at start up. Dealer has replaced alternator twice and problem was resolved for about 2 months and has since recurred.

5 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/19/2007

Headlights dim and flash at random times while driving under regular conditions. Battery gauge on dashboard shows varying voltages. Gm/chevy dealerships suggest replacing alternator, but that does not fix the problem.

6 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2007

Intermittent headlight and voltage problems, the vehicle is a 2004 Trailblazer, the problem began in the fall of 2004. . . Headlights and voltage gauge would dim and drop, would continue to do this intermittently. . . Dealership replaced the alternator twice. . Also the dash has been replaced once due to the voltage spikes caused by this. . . The last time I took it in the service manager told me that gm had issued a bulletin on this saying it was " the nature of the beast" that it was caused by a secondary smog pump that was supposed to come on only when the vehicle was 1st started. . . But could also keep kicking in and out causing a severe voltage draw. . . My truck now has 50,000 miles on it, am afraid these voltage spikes will take out another dash, I feel gm has a serious defect with this and feel this a serious safety issue as the headlights all but go out at low speeds, the dealership here has done all that gm will allow them to do according to them.

7 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 09/28/2005

While driving headlights dim very low to the point that you can not see. Doesn't happen every time. Dashboard lights also go very low. Vehicle taken in to dealership in April. Tech says can not duplicate problem. Car taken in again this time cd player will stop playing if volume is turned all the way down for more that 2 mins. In order to make it play again you have to eject cd and reinsert. Radio was suppose to be ordered never received it. Car taken in again this time different dealership found problem with radio and it was replaced asked for them to check headlights because problem still happens. They also cannot duplicate problem. After leaving dealership cd players stops play again. Sept 28, 2005 while at bank drive through car stalls out, able to restart car. Took vehicle to dealership told them about the stalling out, headlights, and cd player. After having my car there a week and 3 days there conclusion was that the stalling out was because the was carbon build up in throttle body this was cleaned out. My car has 19,000 miles and is a year old I don;t believe this is the problem. While there a new cd player was put in, I was told that the one that was replaced before was a refurbished one and it didn't surprise them that it didn't work. The headlights we were told that we were crazy at first and then after speaking with the service manager was told that my vehicle has California emissions which means we have a 2nd air intake on it that causes the alternator to drain causing the lights to dim. Gm has told us this is normal!!!!!! I am sorry I am not willing to put my family lives on the line because I happen to buy a new car in virginia that was made in California. I leave in a rural area not the city so if I lose my headlights then that means I can't see. This doesn't mean anything to them. We do have a meeting in Nov with the northern area manager. This is not a normal operation of a car nor should it be designed to do this.
