Battery problems of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

30 problems related to battery have been reported for the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Battery problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2012

All gauges on control panel not working, but all service lights come on check engine, abs seat belt, reduce power, battery lights. Speed and fuel are impossible to know as well as warnings to observe from lights. 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer, speedometer will show a faster speed than you moving or will go to 0 while on the freeway. The tach has the same problem. This is a serious safety issue and it should be recalled now. I heard that they had the same issue on pick-ups and they were recalled. Most instrument backlights have burned out preventing the speedometer and other gauges from being seen at night. Very dangerous. Quick search on internet results in a severe epidemic of this problem with all gm SUV's. A class action lawsuit resulted in a nationwide recall for this problem for all similar vehicles but not the chevy Trailblazer or GMC envoy. This seems to be a criminal act by gm. Something needs to be done to protect owners of these vehicles. Driving down highway headlights go out. . Read more...

2 Battery problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2011

My 2004 chevy Trailblazer instrument gauges started going haywire. Everthing that I have read says the whole panel needs replaced. The oil, battery, temp and gas clusters stopped working then all of a sudden while driving down the road start working again. Then the spedometer and tach stopped and started and now nothing is coming on. I have no idea how much fuel that I have and all of the warning lights are all lit up. Waiting for the whole thing to blow. I currently have it at a gm dealer and they said that it will cost me 500 bucks to replace the panel. I told them to go ahead because I dont feel safe driving like that. I have to have this vehicle to work and I want gm to pay for this to be fixed. Major safety concern for me!.

3 Battery problem

Failure Date: 06/28/2011

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact was driving 50 miles per hour when the instrument panel started to register faulty readings to the following mileage, rpms, oil check light, and battery. The failure was not related to the instrument panel lighting, but the vehicle registered false readings. While driving 50 miles per hour the instrument panel indicated the speed was 110 mph. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer, and the manufacturer was not contacted. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 117,000. The current mileage was 120,868. Rvk.

4 Battery problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2011

The problem started in January, 2011, with the voltage gauge taking a few seconds to come up to full voltage, accompanied by dim vehicle lights, at start-up. On February 6, 2011, the temperature, and one other gauge, started moving erratically. The next day, February 7, all of the gauges pointed straight down (6 o’clock position). Research showed this is a common problem, across several model lines, but gm is selectively refusing to fix Trailblazers, under a recall. I verified this with the dealer. The battery was removed for three hours and a loaner battery installed. Gauges worked properly. A brand new battery was installed (again, after three hours with no battery installed) on February 10. As of February 28, the problem has not re-occurred, but research shows many instances of the problem re-occurring after the installation of a new battery.

5 Battery problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2010

At first the battery gauge went. 2 weeks later the tempature gauge and rpm gauge quit functioning properly. Another 2 weeks later the speedometer got stuck and now it reads improperly. The gas gauge has now gone. That was the last gauge to go. This is on a 2004 cheverolet trail blazer.

6 Battery problem

Failure Date: 09/12/2010

My 2004 chevy Trailblazer has multiple lights on -brakes, airbag, battery, service engine soon. All the gauges on the right-oil, gas, battery are below the red line as if the car is off. The car locked itself with the keys in it while it was turned off-had to call emergency road service to unlock. The mechanic states all the lights that are on are actually functioning and that the dashboard cluster module is causing the problem. This is a major safety issue and it appears multiple people have had the same type problem with Trailblazers-why hasn't there been a recall this issue?.

7 Battery problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2010

All gauges on control panel not working, but all service lights come on check engine, abs seat belt, reduce power, battery lights. Now SUV not cranking, it will spin but not turning over. Will crank up after letting it sit for a while. I received a ticket for speeding, already.

8 Battery problem

Failure Date: 02/01/2010

Head lights flickering and dimming while driving. Cars think your are trying to get them to stop allowing them to pull out in front of you. The volts drop severely on the battery gauge. This is no way safe and the gm says its normal. No way!!!.

9 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

The speedometer and battery guage will not work. The speedometer shows over 100 mph when you are not moving. Called the dealership and they said they get calls everyday on this problem, but gm does not have a recall on the Trailblazer only on the pickup trucks.

10 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/09/2010

The rpm gauge, battery gauge and the fuel gauge stopped working. First the rpm gauge stopped and then about a year later the battery gauge stopped and last was the fuel gauge that stopped. The fuel gauge stopped working just a couple of weeks after the battery gauge. I am also having problems with the daytime running lights not staying on periodically. The daytime running lights will go out about twice a year and mainly at night.

11 Battery problem

Failure Date: 12/06/2009

I own a 2004 chevy Trailblazer and the speedometer has progressively gotten to the point of being completely inoperable. The first time I noticed the speedometer read 120 mph when I was driving on the highway were the speed limit was 55 mph and I was driving with the flow of the traffic. I turned the car off and the speedometer still read 50mph. As of a month ago my fuel, oil, battery, and temp gauge are all inop; the needles never move. With this my battery, seatbelt, abs, and parking park stay illuminated. This is a safety concern because I never know how fast I'm going, how much fuel I have, if my car is running hot, I have no warning indication of anything going on with my vehicle.

12 Battery problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2009

I purchase brand new 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer 3. 2l v6 as of right now it only has 25,800 original mils. And all the gauges on the instrument panel (oil pressure, speedometer, fuel, and tachometer has stop working while on the highway my god that was scary. Also, this has drain the battery had to replace it the cluster instrument panel is being replace it is coasting me $580. 00. I think there should be a recall on this issue due to this can cause traffic accident. As I was at the Chevrolet dealership at the service center today there was another Trailblazer with the same problem.

13 Battery problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2009

The front air vents in my 2004 Trailblazer quit working after I installed a new battery. My front air vents will no longer work. After researching this on the internet it appears that this is a common problem with the chevy Trailblazer. It will require the purchase and installation of a new control module to regulate the air flow so the vents will work. This is a component/design problem that gm needs to fix not the consumer.

14 Battery problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2009

In September 2009, my 2004 Trailblazer started going haywire! it lost all power (while going down the interstate), the power/cigarette outlets stopped working, the doors started locking themselves (sometimes with the keys in the ignition) , the radio would go loud or stop working, my speedometer went nuts (like saying that I was doing 65mph, when I was at a complete stop or 120mph down the hwy), the service engine soon light would go on and off,and my heater will not blow out the vents in the dash. We have taken it to a mechanic. He tried everything from replacing the battery, fuel filter, and spark plugs. He even hooked it up to his scanner (which showed that there was nothing wrong with the car) all this and $700. 00 later I still have the same problems. Now I'm told that the electrical panel will need to be replaced at a cost around $500-$900!! if you look at carcomplaints. Com you see that there are many more people like me with the same car and the same problems. This is a huge safety issue. How long will it be before someone pushes chevy into doing a recall? does someone have to be killed or kill someone else for this to happen? I was so glad to google car complaints and find that it wasn't just me that was having so many problems with this Trailblazer.

15 Battery problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2009

2004 chevy Trailblazer has significant electrical system issues. The tachometer is inconsistent and will read 1000 rpm when you know the engine is at least 3000. Also, similar problems with other gauges. Sometimes they work for a few days, and then don't. Also, constantly needs jumped. Just got a new battery two weeks ago, and already won't turn over. Good connections and clean terminals, but for whatever reason the electrical system drained the battery. This has been non-stop! none of this covered by dealership!.

16 Battery problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2009

Yesterday my dashboard control panel worked great. This morning (4/18/09) as I was driving to my bank, I noticed that none of the gauges and/or lights were working ( oil gauge, temperature gauge, battery gauge, speedometer, tachometer, etc). Major safety factor.

17 Battery problem

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While driving 10-15 mph, the vehicle started to loose power. Occasionally the vehicle shut off, the battery and rpm gauges also stopped working. The contact feels is aware of the safety risk since the vehicle shut off without warning which could result in a crash. The current mileage was 90,000 and the failure mileage was 70,000.

18 Battery problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2009

2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer all instruments intermittently quit functioning during normal operation (speedometer, fuel level, rpm's, battery charge, oil pressure, temperature, mileage, and gear indicator. You can't tell what gear you are in. Difficult to figure out forward from reverse. This is not safe at all to operate especially not knowing what gear you are in.

19 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2009

The engine temperature and battery charge meter are inoperative, the needles point down (off the gauge). The speedometer and tach gauges also work intermittently. The dealer offered to replace the entire instrument cluster for approx $700, but this part is not under any kind of original or extended warranty. This same part was recalled on several other gm models, but not including the Trailblazer. Not having a temperature gauge and speedometer has potentially seriously dangerous consequences, gm needs to recall and replace this part immediately.

20 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/03/2009

For the past several months we have been experiencing difficulty with the gauges on our 2004 chevy Trailblazer. Initially the speedometer was malfunctioning but we found that if we stopped the engine and restarted it, it would reset itself. Over time, it has been unable to reset and currently reads 120mph while idle. Additionally, the other gauges have begun to malfunction as well. The gas gauge does not work at all and the battery and oil temp gauges work on occasion. It is our understanding this is a problem on chevy Trailblazers from 2002-2004, however a recall on the parts have only been called on the 02 and 03 models, not the 04. Although we have not had any accidents or received any tickets from this product failure, we have ran out of gas and had to use another device to keep track of our speed.

21 Battery problem

Failure Date: 12/08/2008

At about 65,000 miles my tachometer started to read improper, later my gauges began to read improper. This doesn't happen all the time. But you can't trust them. You never know how fast you are going, if you have fuel, if your engine is overheating,if battery is charging, if I have oil pressure. I am on disibilty and can't afford the several hundered dollars it will cost to repair. I have found from a few sources this is a common problem. I just talked to gm, I was told that if I had it repaired to keep my reciepts. But there is no recall on the 04 Trailblazer only on full size vehicles. So if I spent more money on an other venicle gm would fix it and make it safe. I feel it is unsafe for myself or my wife.

22 Battery problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2008

I own a 2004 Trailblazer with 53,915 miles. In November 08, my speedometer, tachometer & oil gauges started working only about 5% of the time. I could disconnect the battery to get them to start working again but after 2 weeks of doing that both the speedometer and the tachometer quite working and point straight down to the floor board. The oil gauge works when it wants. I have done a lot of research on the internet and was shocked to see all the same complaints and gm not doing a thing to help out their customers. I hope gm will man up to their problems and place a recall on these vehicles.

23 Battery problem

Failure Date: 10/24/2008

Instrument cluster goes crazy. No oil pressure/excessive oil pressure, no tach/pegged tach, speedometer gives false speed readings(this is really dangerous), battery reads low volts or off the scale volts/. This happens every day. Chevy dealers estimated repair cost $600-$700 dollars.

24 Battery problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2008

The speedometer does not work accurately. It is sometimes about 30 miles off but it has wound all the way around. I can only tell my speed by the flow of traffic. The battery gage also does not work, it always shows no charge.

25 Battery problem

Failure Date: 05/22/2008

Purchased my Trailblazer brand new in 2004 and started having problem with the instrument cluster in may of 2007 the speedometer has stopped working the battery and oil gauges are not reading and the rpm gauges works at random. I taken the truck back to the dealership and was told ir would be $400 to repair and it not covered under any warranty work. I'm also having a problem with the headlight working at random. They will work but cut off while I'm driving at night. I feel both issues need to have a mass recall on all 2002-2007 Trailblazers.

26 Battery problem

Failure Date: 02/05/2008

2004 chevy Trailblazer all gauges, tachometer, speedometer, battery, fuel, have failed one at a time starting with tachometer not operating at all, to speedometer sporatic for several months, now currently stuck at over 120mph. Have contacted dealer about problem and they say it is a very common problem in this model, there has been no recall for this issue and would be approx. $1500 to repair. Why is gm not concerned with this issue?this is definately a safety issue to be driving at unknown speeds with an unknown fuel level, etc. ---- absolutely obsurd!!!.

27 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2008

I own a 2004 chevy Trailblazer which started giving me problems almost as soon as the warranty was over. Most of the gauges (speedometer, tachometer, battery indicator, etc. . . ) in the instrument panel are not functioning or function only sporadically and erratically. Also the air bag light stays on continuously. I have been reading online that this is a fairly common problem on this vehicle and that gm even sued (and won) the instrument panel manufacturer. However no recall has been issued on Trailblazers, meanwhile other gm vehicles (I. E. Chevy silverado) that uses the same instrument panel and thereby has the same problems have been recalled. General motors should not be allowed to exhibit this kind of behavior and a recall should be issued to every vehicle they built which used this faulty and failure prone instrument panel. Sincerely, outraged Trailblazer owner.

28 Battery problem

Failure Date: 12/13/2007

Trailblazer refused to charge the battery on the travel trailer. The dash lights occasionally flickered, then came back on strong. Gm dealer could not find the problem. A local mechanic simply took the cover off the electrical distribution box at the front right of the engine, then pushed all the wires deeper into their contact sockets. That resolved the problems, at least until now. Now the service engine light is on again, and it says it is for the pressure system.

29 Battery problem

Failure Date: 07/17/2006

Gm is having an electrical issue on many 2004 vehicles resulting in gradual deteriation of instrument cluster performance. It starts with the speedometer failing, reading 120 mph while sitting at a red light. Then the fuel guage, low fuel light will come on, then while driving to a fuel station it will slowly climb to 1/2 tank reading or more. Next is the tachometer, it will bounce from 2000 rpm to over 6000 rpm (red line) also while sitting at stop sign or parked in a parking space. Finally the oil and coolant temperature gauges read hot (past red line) at intial start up from sitting 12 hours in -3 degree weather. An online search has found numerous complaints of the same problem around the united states extending beyond the Trailblazer to other vehicles. This same issue was recalled on gm trucks but the other vehicles. The vehicle operator has no acurate idea of mph, rpm, oil or water temperature and battery charge. The average repair cost to replace the bad computer board is $500 to $1000.

30 Battery problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

I was backing out of a driveway when my radio starting sounding funny, then smoke started filling up in the car it smelled like wires were burning. I could not see the gear, the door or window would not open and I was trapped in my seat belt. All of my passengers got out safe. I was screaming that I could not get out that's when my son came and pulled me out the truck. I got a few scratches on my leg and my knee. The truck would not start back up for awhile. It shut it self down, it started back up about 15 minutes later. I was about 3 blocks from my home, I was dropping off a neighbor. I did manage to drive home this happened on January 1, 2005 at about 2:30 am. I did start the truck up about 2:00 pm you could still smell burnt wires. I am afraid to drive it. The doors will not lock and all of the dash board warning lights are lit up, like the check engine, battery, brake light and etc. I will be getting it towed on Monday , January 3, 2005 to bill wink dealership.
