36 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 07/26/2009

We were driving our 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer to the local mall and upon speeding up to 35 mph and changing to faster lane, transmission gave way and vehicle immediately decelerated while traffic behind us was approaching. A bit of a scary moment, but there was no accident. There was no warning that this was about to happen, and I had my wife and three-year-old in the vehicle. The transmission was completely wrecked on a vehicle that is well maintained and only has about 62,000 miles on it. After reading on the internet this seems to be a well documented problem, but I also believe a safety issue, and gm has never recalled these transmissions to address this issue.

40 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 05/13/2009

92,0000 miles, we do no towing. I've had vehicles that get 150,000 miles with no transmission problems. Driving vehicle when all of a sudden it shifted into second gear, I pulled to the side of the road and stopped. Put vehicle in park and shut engine. Looked under hood & saw no obvious problems. Restarted vehicle and drove 3/10 m. And repeated same mannerism of shifting into 2nd gear. Had vehicle towed and shop told us we need a new transmission.

41 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 05/09/2009

I have transmission problems with my 2004 trail blazer I first noticed it when I was driving down the road at 55 and all the sudden it was like the vehicle was put in neutral and I pulled to the side shut the vehicle off and tried to start again and it took off fine like nothing was wrong. Then a day or 2 later the same thing happened so I had it towed to the garage. They told me my transmission was bad I was shocked with only 58,000 on the vehicle they showed me the dipstick was rusted right off and asked me what happened I then asked them what happened. So long story short they wanted to charge $3000 to replace because the warranty ran out at 36,000 I refuse to pay when there should be a recall for a problem they admit they have. And to think the government or should I say we the people just bailed this company out as far as I'm concerned if they are going to make junk let go bankrupt.

42 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

45 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 01/21/2009

1. Backing out of a parking space. Heard a loud pop. 2. Reverse no longer works, cant back out of parking spaces. Will not shift into 2nd or 4th gear. Transmission needs to be replaced. 3. Transmission must be rebuilt or new transmission installed. Costs between 1500 and 3000 dollars. Car only has 67,000 miles on it and the transmission should not fail this quickly.

46 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 12/19/2008

On 11/14/07 I purchased a "02 Trailblazer from salisbury Chevrolet, in scotia, NY. On December 21, 2007 I had the transfer switch replaced because the 4wd would randomly switch from 2wd to 4lo or awd. I never had to use the 4wd last winter, snow falls weren't that bad. Went to switch it on this year on 12/19 and come to find out that my 4wd was not functioning. Took it the dealer and it will cost me $600 to repair. The "service 4wd" light never came on.

47 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 11/30/2008

I own a 2003 chevy Trailblazer ext with 4wd. On several occasions the vehicle has rolled away while in park. Also, the vehicle on 2 separate occasions went forward when the gear select was in reverse. Finally, on 4 occasions the vehicle put itself in neutral. Twice at speed and twice while waiting at traffic lights. This vehicle nearly ran over my 3-year-old child and the dealer claims all of these instances have been driver error. I've had it with gm and their unwillingness to see any urgency with this huge safety related issue.

48 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 11/26/2008

Was pulling into work parking lot when a heard a quick bang followed by screeching noise. I tried parking but could not go into reverse. Forward gears appear to work fine but reverse is completely gone. My 2002 Trailblazer has under 70,000 miles on it and has always been maintained in excellent condition. After reading some of the complaints online, I suspect that once I take it for repair I will be told it is the sun shell and corresponding gears. I'm glad I wasn't in a dangerous position when the tranny went out but I completely agree that the sun shell issue in these Trailblazers is a huge safety issue and it's sickening that as of today a recall to correct the issue is not out there! I suppose it takes a few tragedies for someone to do something about it but I'm hoping that's not the case this time.

49 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 11/04/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that the transmission sun gear was faulty. An electrical component was burning inside the vehicle, along with abs failure. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer and they stated that there was no guarantee that the vehicle was working properly. The oil needed to be changed, so the contact changed it himself. The failures occurred right after the vehicle was purchased from the dealer. The dealer performed a 120 point inspection, but they never repaired the vehicle. The failure mileage was 101,576.

50 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 10/20/2008

I had 37000 miles on my SUV when my sunshield went out luckily it was still under warranty. Then at 75,000, it went out again, I had to pay for half the cost. Now at 134,000 miles my transmission has gone out. I have been round and round with the gm people. They do not want to do anything. I have had it rebuilt twice and it keeps going out. I keep telling the dealership that there is something causes the transmission to keep going out but they don't want to listen and want to put a brand new one in. I think gm should have to pay for everything I have spend so far and also I will not ever by a gm vehicle again. I will buy foreign. I am still out of commission.

51 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 10/15/2008

As I was driving up a hill in ohio, my car tried to downshift and made a grinding sound and I temporarily lost control of the vehicle causing me to swerve off of the road. I immediately took my foot off the gas and when I regained control, the car no longer shifted correctly. Apparently my sunshell broke which I guess is a common problem with cars that have this sunshell in them. It ended up costing $2500 to fix my vehicle because gm uses inferior car parts. This is a safety hazard and a recall should be initiated.

52 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 10/02/2008

Driving along and hear a thump, rpm's rev up. Transmission not shifting properly. Then, when I try to put the car in reverse, there is no reverse! this is the second time this has happened on this vehicle. I've read that this happened to numerous people, and it has something to do with the sunshell part of the transmission. Chevy needs to recall this as it is an ongoing problem.

53 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 09/05/2008

The contact owns a 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer. When the contact shifted into reverse, he noticed that the rpm's would rise; however, the vehicle would not move. He also noticed that the transmission would not shift from first to second gear unless the contact released the pressure off of the throttle. The vehicle was taken to a transmission shop and it was discovered that the sun shield needed to be replaced. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileages were 39,544.

54 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

57 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 06/02/2008

Both issues occur daily: apparent transmission problems. . . Vehicle cannot seem to "get in gear" when cruising anywhere from 40 - 70 mph. It bounces back and forth between gears - not normal driving conditions. Multiple trips to 2 different gm dealers has exposed no problems, as they "cannot replicate the problem". They must not have driven the car at those speeds as it does it religiously. Like many other complaints listed here, and throughout searches done for 2004 Trailblazer issues, my tachometer & speedometer are faulty. They do not work properly. . . At any time may show 8000 rpms or 100+ mph when sitting at a stoplight, or resting at 0 rpms and 0 mph when cruising on a highway. This is dangerous, and gm needs to fix this problem ASAP for models experiencing this issue. I'm very disappointed there has not been a recall - my family has always been owners of gm vehicles. . . But will be no more.

58 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 05/14/2008

We took our car on Wednesday 5/14 to superior Chevrolet in cincinnati OH because on Tuesday evening the transmission felt like it was starting to slip and not driving correctly. The dealership contacted us on Thursday 5/15 to say they were waiting for the warranty representative to come out and give approval before it could be repaired. On Friday afternoon, we were advised the claim was denied because there was water in the transmission. The service manager said it was due to a gm defect with the dip stick - the way it was positioned allowed water to get into the transmission and rust, so the warranty was null and void. The service manager said he spoke w/his gm rep and they would agree to "do us a favor" and split the cost of the new transmission - $1200 still out of pocket for us. When we pushed back and asked why we would have to pay anything, they refused to answer - just told us to fight it with our warranty company. I've been researching online to figure out how to fight this and prevent other people from suffering as well. If it's a gm defect in the way the dip stick is positioned, the consumer should not have to pay for the damage caused by the defect. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated. The car is a 2004 chevy Trailblazer with a full extended warranty, but it does specifically state it's void if the problem is due to water. After reading on several chat rooms, there seems to be many people with this same issue.

60 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 04/24/2008

No warning at all. Sounded like I hit something when pulling into a parking spot. I put the truck in reverse and heard the same thing. At 85,000 the transmission was shot and I had to spend almost 1,300. 00 to have a rebuilt put in. This truck has been well-maintained and is in very good condition. I am very angry.

61 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 03/21/2008

My Chevrolet Trailblazer ext, that I purchased 4 1/2 years ago and it has 44,000 miles on it, has a transmission problem. The Chevrolet dealership tells me that it is a 2000 fix. I am angry and disappointed that a vehicle with relatively few miles on it is having such a major problem.

64 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2002 Chevrolet Trailblazer

65 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2001 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 12/20/2007

My 2001 chevy tb has already had the transmission rebuilt as the result of a sun shield failure at 36k miles. As of right now I am at 90k and it is failing again. A quick search through edmunds. Com shows this is not an isolated incident. Chevy has done nothing to rectify this and since they were the ones who supposedly fixed it before, they have obviously not attempted to engineer an adequate fix for this failure. If this fails on an interstate there will be a serious safety issue for me and my family.

After stopping the car, I found only the reverse was not working - the other gears will shift over 3000 rpm. I have been told it is a faulty sunshell gear in the transmission.

68 Automatic Transmission problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 10/15/2007

Transmission started acting up about 2 weeks ago at right around 47,000 miles. It's gotten to where I cannot go more than 45 miles an hour or so and it takes me 5 minutes to accelerate to that point.
