Chevrolet Trailblazer owners have reported 179 problems related to power train (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Chevrolet Trailblazer based on all problems reported for the Trailblazer.
Vehicle displayed "shift to park" error and would not shut off. This occurs after the shifter is placed in the park position. By any standard, a defective component that prevents the car from being shut off is an extreme safety concern and needs immediate attention. Additionally, the instrument panel remains illuminated and the aux power items continue to function. This has happened multiple times and has drained the battery on several occasions.

The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while in park(p), the gear failed to shift into the intended gear. The contact wiggled the gear shifter for the vehicle to recognize that the gear shifter was shifted out of park. The shift to park error was displayed. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, but was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted, and referred to the NHTSA hotline. The failure mileage was approximately 32,700.
When I shift my vehicle into park and hit the button to shut it off, a "shift to park" message appears on the dic screen. I then am required to start my vehicle again, shift into gear, and then put it back into park and attempt to shut the vehicle off again. It has taken me up to 15 minutes to be able to get it to recognize that my vehicle is in park and for the message to not pop up. If I get out of the car while the message is still on the dic screen, I cannot lock my vehicle and it drains the battery. I contacted my local Chevrolet dealer and they are saying that although this is a known issue which has had more than one gm service bulletin on this issue which includes my year and model, there is not an actual recall for this, so I have to pay out of pocket, because my bumper to bumper warranty expired at 36,000 miles and I am currently just shy of 39,000 miles. Of note, there is also a class action lawsuit for this exact issue so I am confused as to why a recall would not have been issued, or why it would not still be covered despite the expired bumper to bumper warranty.

My vehicle displayed a shift to park message even though I was already in park. I could not turn off the engine, I could not lock my car. I had to go back into drive and then park mode and wiggle the shifter multiple times to get it to recognize park and turn off the car. This is now happening almost every time I drive the car. I did an internet search to see how to rectify the problem only to find that this exact issue has plagued gm vehicles for a decade and they still have not chosen to rectify the faulty part. There have been multiple recalls and class action lawsuits for the shift to park fault but not for my vehicle year yet! there are many Trailblazer owners who are experiencing this exact issue (on online forums) and gm so far is refusing to take responsibility and issue a recall to fix the issue for owners and also to stop using this faulty system in their cars. I have reached out to gm about this multiple times the past few weeks and requested they pay for diagnostic and fix the problem because it is a common and known problem with gm vehicles but they want me to pay for it myself and the repair and then they may decide to help out - unacceptable in my opinion. To be honest there needs to be a recall now and gm needs to be forced to change the components in all new models to stop this happening in future models going forward. This problem can cause the car battery to drain, it can cause the vehicle to roll away if it’s not recognizing it’s in park. Thankfully that hasn’t happened to me but others have had this happen. Not being able to shut the engine off or lock my car is a problem. This is a safety issue that needs addressing. I have lots of messages and communication from general motors which I have attempted to attach the screenshots with the photo below but get an error message on the upload page.
My car has been well maintained and always taken for service according to recommendations from the manufacturer. My brakes have always squealed since I first bought it new but apparently there’s nothing they can do about it so I’ve just dealt with it. Now a more serious concern I am having after manufacturer warranty is my dash is displaying a shift to park message every time I shift into park and turn off my car. I also might add that this has been going on with others! chevy doesn’t think it’s a concern when it is a very serious issue. I have children and once when I went to get gas after almost being on empty my car wouldn’t turn off because of that error and I couldn’t get gas. I tried turning it off and on multiple times to fix but it just didn’t want to work when I needed it most. I have to aggressively charge gears go get it to work most of the time. It’s a serious issue that has been brought to their attention and shouldn’t be happening to a vehicle under 50,000 miles and well maintained. These issues need to be addressed there’s no reason I should have to pay to fix an issue this extensive and costly in a 2022 vehicle.
I am unsure which component maybe failing, vehicle has not been in altered in any way ,inspected yet, nor has any warning indicators. This 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer uses a traditional key for ignition. On several occasions now, the key is becoming lodged/stuck in the ignition when attempting to shut down or turn off the engine and remove the key. Have made sure foot is on the brake, front steering tires are straight, shifter is properly engaged in the park position, and even jiggled the key tumbler assembly. Have had to leave the stuck key in the ignition while grocery shopping, until returning home to ask my fiance for his help and assistance. When this problem happens it is not only an inconvenience, but leaving a key in the ignition to an unattended car, obviously is not good, and leaves opportunity for many not good possibilites to occur.
When shifting from park to drive after the engine start none of the gears on the shifter engage. All positions are in neutral except for park. When shifting from park to any gear the engine revs when the throttle is pressed but the vehicle will immediately roll whichever way the ground is inclined. The power brakes won't engage thus forcing the driver to put their entire weight on the brake pedal to stop the car. A fix for this issue is described in general motors service update n2424466290 which identifies solution as replacement of the clutch piston housing. The dealer will not fix the problem because my VIN # was not on their list of vehicles to fix. This is a safety issue because it happens randomly and surprises the driver when the car suddenly starts coasting in whatever direction the ground is sloping. In my case the car suddenly rolled into a lane of traffic backwards in a costco parking lot. Fortunately no cars were coming as I struggled to apply enough force to the brake pedal to stop the car. Another time the car decided to back out of the garage before I could react with either the brake pedal or the e-brake. (the electric emergency brake would not work during this incident). Please expand the manufactures known solution to all vehicles with this issue regardless of VIN number. Thank you- [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. The vehicle keeps vibrating binding lurching jumping when driving going in reverse and turning the car in a circle I took it in they replaces they rear end and transfer case on it there was a lot of metal shavings in both no clue or explanation why got the vehicle back over a month later to the same problems as before took it back in they went for a test drive with us and verified its still happening and that day they shrugged shoulders they dont know why or what's happing they supposedly got ahold of Trailblazer and they said this is normal for these vehicles and safe to drive . The vehicle dont sound or feel very safe at all I am reaching out for help with this the vehicle does this every time you drive it.
My car key keeps getting stuck in the ignition and won’t come out until we unhook the negative on the battery.
Wont go into park.
The vehicle began to display 'shift to park' on the display even after the vehicle was in the park position. This started periodically over a few days, but then became a regular occurrence within a week. At first this could be resolved by shifting back out of park and back into park, but that became less effective as time went on. The vehicle will not shutdown fully when this warning is displayed and therefore can cause a battery drain condition, which can result in a safety risk returning to a vehicle with a weak or dead battery. This occurred at 37 months of ownership with ~28,100 miles on the vehicle. In researching to understand the problem, I discovered that there are many instances of this same issue occurring at about the same time period, as well as there being several class action lawsuits on the identical issue, which shows that it isn't isolated. Further, the cost of this repair is a replacement of the shifter assembly at nearly $700 on a $24,000 vehicle less than 3 years old, because the failed inexpensive switch isn't repairable. Repair information is available, but the system isn't allowing for an upload of the files.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked and occupied, after turning the vehicle off, the contact noticed a beeping sound coming from the vehicle. The contact stated that the message to “shift to park” was displayed; however, the vehicle was already in park(p). The contact stated that even though the vehicle was turned off the radio continued to play with instrument panel warning lights illuminated. The contact stated that front and rear exterior lights remained illuminated, and the beeping sound persisted. The contact exited and locked and unlocked the vehicle, the contact entered the vehicle, restarted the vehicle, and the failure persisted. The vehicle was taken to the dealer’s service department and the technician entered the vehicle and the shifted the gear shifter several times and he was able to clear the message. The vehicle was not diagnosed. The contact related the failure to an article on google about a malfunction in the park switch inside the shifter assembly. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened a case. The approximate failure mileage was 141,928.
Almost every time I shift from park to drive and take my foot off the brake my car jolts forward a couple feet/inches to take off by itself in a manner that it should not. This has been going on since I got the car brand new and have had it just over a little over a year. I try to be as careful as I can with it and mentioned it to the Chevrolet dealership that does all my maintenance on my car. They are not sure what is causing the issue, but on 05/24/2025 I was attempting to get ready to get gas and needed to pull up slightly a little bit more and when I shifted to drive my car jolted forward and hit another vehicle. No damage was done to the other vehicle or mine, and the gentleman was nice and said it caused no damage for either of us but my car cannot keep doing this. Sometime is not right with it to be constantly jolting forward as soon as I shift to drive and take my foot off the break peddle to go. This could have been a lot worse had a human been in front of me and I do not want that to ever happen.
While driving the car stalled and eventually stopped running. The battery was still on, but there was no power to the engine. The car needed to be pushed out of the road and towed to the dealership for work.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while attempting to park the vehicle, the contact noticed that the gear shifter was inoperable, and the vehicle would not shift into gear properly. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed and determined that the gear shifter had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
On 4/14 with only 21 miles on the odometer in this newly purchased car the entire transmission failed, per the dealership because of a “leaking valve”. The check engine light came on after the car was jumpy and then the car refused to speed up on an extremely busy street and began locking up, putting us at serious risk of an accident. It was barely able to reach a parking lot and at that point all of the transmission fluid leaked out all over the parking lot.
At 44 k miles, my car started giving me a message "shift in to park" after I stopped my car and turned off the motor. I was unable to essentially shut my engine off and leave my vehicle. I called the GMC shop, where they diagnosed it as faulty wiring. It is not under warranty, therefore I will encure the cost which is not a normal item to go out on a vehicle. Also, our 22 Trailblazer is also giving us this same message.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated while parking the vehicle, the gear shifter was shifted into park, however the shift to park warning light illuminated. In addition, the vehicle failed to turn off. The contact made several attempts to shift to park, and the gear shifter failed to function as intended. The contact stated that after several attempts, the shift to park warning light turned off and the contact was able to park and turn off the vehicle. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The dealer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was scheduled for a diagnostic testing within the next several days. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 31,000.
The gear handle, when I place in park, will not park, therefore, I am not able to turn off my car. I have to jiggle, push start button and try over and over. This is a 2 . 5 year old vehicle. Warning alert comes on stating the obvious, unable to park! also, it sounds like when I do drive of like the dragging, rough sound, which sounds like the gear is not fully in drive. Again, this is a new vehicle. It is unsafe and getting worse. Thank you.
Engine power reduced came on after I was driving from a patient’s home. My car started driving very rough. I had to pull over because I was in danger of being hit from behind. I took my car to a mechanic and was diagnosed with the code dtc p2714. I looked online and there are a lot of people having this issue and being put in dangerous situations when we drive. Chevy knows about the issue and has not issued any recalls. Unfortunately for me my vehicle is past the limited warranty so now I have to save up money to get my transmission serviced. I’m never buying american again. I could’ve been really hurt when my engine cut off.
Alert for shift to park keeps alerting after already in park. I have to turn car on and off at least 20xs to get notice to shut off . I cannot leave car with notice on dash screen or it will beep at me and drain battery. I went to service at chevy and they told me this isn’t a recall and the part I need is a new shifter and it will cost me money on a 3 yr old car to fix with 14000 miles. I am extremely upset because the part is unavailable and no estimate when I can get it fixed. I’ve been dealing with this for a few months and it take me 20mins off and restarting to get error to go away. I need answers !.
When driving my steering wheel goes to the left and it’s uncontrollable, I have to yank it to the right and hold it there to keep my vehicle straight it’s unsafe and does it randomly. It started around the 22 of January, 2025 and has persisted in the days following.
The contact owns a 2025 Chevrolet Trailblazer 9b. The contact stated that when he stopped the vehicle and had shut the vehicle off, but had left the vehicle in drive (d) and had not engaged the parking brake, the vehicle rolled forward. The contact stated that this was also occurring when he had stopped the vehicle, turned the vehicle off and placed it in reverse (r) without engaging the parking brake the vehicle rolled backwards. The contact had not taken the vehicle to a local dealer or independent mechanic. The vehicle was not diagnosed and was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 700.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while attempting to remove the key from the ignition, the key remained stuck in the ignition cylinder. The contact had to turn off and restart the vehicle several times to be able to remove the key. The contact stated that the failure occurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who sprayed the ignition cylinder to clean the cylinder; however, the failure persisted. The vehicle was returned to the dealer who diagnosed that the shift lock mechanism failed to recognize that the vehicle was in park(p). The shifter assembly was replaced. The manufacturer was informed of the failure and opened a case. The manufacturer referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
This vehicle has approximately 35,000 miles of driving time on the odometer. This car will not recognize that the shift lever has been place into the park position. Doors will not lock when the car is turned off. If trying to seek refuge from an assailant, the car will only alarm but will not lock the doors for safety. Also, while storing items in the vehicle while at a metropolitan hospital (where I work) or a metropolitan grocery/fuel station, the vehicle will only alarm but will not lock under any circumstance. The car is responding as if the car is still in a movement gear position and will not recognize the shift position of park. I have heard of many similar documented cases regarding this particular shift issue in relation to the 2021 Chevrolet trail blazer yet there has been no related recall related to this ever more prevalent repair need. Some reports (not ours. . . ) report the automobile transmission converting to park while in movement and while in a selected movement shift position. I do not want this to happen to me. My car (VIN # kl79musl3mb130906) is at the dealership for repair. The dealership informs us that the needed part(s) are currently under manufacture at a supplier and that there is no estimated date for the part(s) arrival or date to complete this repair. The car cannot be driven safely in a metropolitan area because in cannot be locked with the ignition off and the car just continues to alarm if walked away from.
The contact owns a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact was informed by a mobile safelite technician that there were minor spider web cracks on the windshield. The windshield was replaced by safelite. Additionally, the contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the vehicle made an abnormal sound. The contact also stated that upon pressing the push to start button to turn off the vehicle, the vehicle shuddered, made an abnormal sound, and then turned off. The contact stated that the failure recurred while starting the vehicle. There was no warning light illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that a transmission bolt was missing. The vehicle was repaired. The contact also stated that upon parking and turning off the vehicle, the message "shift to park" was displayed while the gear shifter was in park(p). Additionally, the contact stated that while driving with no vehicles nearby, the automatic emergency braking system engaged, causing the vehicle to jerk. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that an unknown sensor had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 40,000.
The contact owns a 2021 Chevrolet trail blazer. The contact stated that after shifting to the park position the message "shift to park" was erroneously displayed and the vehicle would not shut off. The contact had to shift multiple times before the transmission switched to the park position and the engine was able to be shut off. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the shifter was faulty and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not yet repaired. The manufacturer was also notified of the failure and confirmed that the part was on backorder. The failure mileage was 16,600.
Shift to park is displayed on the driver information center (dic) when vehicle attempting to turn vehicle off. This is a known issue to manufacturer, but not warrantied fixes are being offered. (TSB 23-na-119).
Receiving "shift to park" alert when vehicle is already in park.
Shift control assembly (shift to park issue) I bought a 2022 Chevrolet Trailblazer custom, and around 57,550 miles it started throwing a shift to park error message. This does not allow me to turn my car off complete as it does not recognize it’s in park. It has been looked at by dealer and parts are back ordered no known fix for it. This is a well known issue from Chevrolet but they only cover it under bumper to bumper and not powertrain, but everywhere I read it’s a powertrain issue. This will drain my battery inhibiting my ability to use my vehicle which is only 2 years old. This could be a safety concern since the car isn’t recognizing it’s in park therefore not allowing it to shutdown and leaving electricity running through it all the time. Let alone a huge hassle for the drivers of the vehicle.
Vehicle would not go over 20 mph at times. When vehicle would shift from 2nd to 3rd gear the engine would race yet not engage.
When attempting to park the car I am able to shift into park, however, I get a message on the dashboard to “shift to park”. Dashboard also shows a “p” to reflect car is in park creating a contradiction on the dashboard of displayed items. When this occurs the car will not shut off. Dealer service has indicated this is not producing an error code, they have had many complaints, and the issue is not covered by power train warranty and part is back ordered. I am very concerned about the safety of my vehicle given the indicated failures of the shifting mechanism and Chevrolets inability to remedy the issue due to unavailable parts.
On [xxx] I shifted my 2021 chevy Trailblazer to park and and was unable to shut off the vehicle. When I shifted it to park it kept displaying an error "shift to park" on the dashboard, but the shifter knob was correctly in park. I attempted to press the power button to turn off the car and it wouldnt do anything but beep. I tried multiple times to shift to park to get the car to recognize it was actually in park and turn off the vehicle but I was unable to do so. I was frantic and panicked to find I could not turn off my vehicle as I park on a apartment complex lot. That day I took the car to henna Chevrolet in austin TX for repair. They said the part was on backorder from gm with no eta. It is now November 1st and there is still no eta on when I will get the part for my car from gm. This has been going on for 3 weeks now with no end. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
My daughter was stopped at a stoplight and the auto-stop engaged. The light turned green and she began to accelerate when all of the error lights on the dash lit up, then the dash info system and infotainment system went out followed by the engine turning off and not restarting. While all of this happened, the vehicle behind me struck my daughter’s car. Luckily it was at a low rate of speed and no one was injured. I took the car to the dealer and after nearly a week of testing they found nothing wrong and found no error codes in the system. They ere not able to replicate the problem. However, once we got the vehicle back a similar instance happed again, except just the dash info system and infotainment system went out and the car was still drivable. Once restarted the electronics came back on as normal. It has not happened again at this point. Had the first incident happened at a higher rate of speed a severe injury or fatality could have occurred.
