Chevrolet Trailblazer owners have reported 8 problems related to battery cable (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
On 11/6/2010 while driving down the highway, smoke began to appear beneath the steering column. Pulled over and turned off vehicle, truck remained running and would not shut off, all lights interior and exterior lit up and would not shut off. . . . Opened hood and began pulling fuses to shut vehicle off and disconnect power. Had to cut battery cable and pull about 20 fuses to shut off. Called for tow truck and after inspection by myself and numerous mechanics it was found that a bundle of approx 80 wires perpendicular to the steering column had melted and started on fire. Total damage over $6600. Vehicle is totaled and insurance company (geico) refuses to pay claiming it was a vehicle defect. I owe over 10k on vehicle, purchased used 02/20/2010 with 59k. Total loss estimated at over 17k since finance company is no help trying to assist with repairs, I am letting them reposess it.

Had p0128 code for about 1 year. Replaced thermostat after p1680 code, reduced engine power light came on. Reduced engine power light went away on next crank up to move vehicle and change thermostat. Abs and brake lights both on intermittently. Tachometer has been sticking and speedometer showed erratic signs around 55 mph. Now all gauges going wacko or not working at all at times. Temperature gauge wrapped completely around without even starting cold engine. About a mile later, instrument panel lit completely up then went away, gauges reset, and ran fine with properly operating instrument panel. . . At least until I got home. Then wacko stuff again. Reset pcm by disconnecting battery cable, now things seem fine. . . For now. I'm told to redo bad ground on ecbm before suspecting bad abs module and to replace ignition switch before suspecting bad instrument cluster and pcm. However, dealer analysis said abs module got moisture in it and the instrument panel needs to be replace. First is a $1000 abs module, second is a $400 panel, both have labor charges additional.

2003 chevy Trailblazer. Speedometer went out on my vacation to florida. Had about 63,000 miles then. It got stuck at different speeds and stays stuck until my husband disconnects the battery cables. It happens probably once a week. Don't have $600 dollars to fix the cloister problem. Reading about the problem it seems pretty common and chevy should recall it. I've had chevy's all my life but this one is a lemon and wouldn't recommend it to anyone!!! any suggestions?
can chevy pay part of it or recall it?? thanks.

I began having problems with speedometer and tachometer several years ago. The tac and speedometer go haywire and then go dead while driving down the road. I brought it in and was told that it was a faulty gauge cluster that needed to be replaced and that it was a problem already recalled in other gm vehicles. The service tech was able to unhook the battery cable and reset the gauges but they still aren't fixed. I have been reading multitudes of complaints of the same thing.
The contact owns a 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. While the contact was driving approximately 65 mph, suddenly the speedometer displayed an inaccurate reading. The reading would fluctuate intermittently at any given speed. The contact stated the failure could be corrected by turning the engine off and restarting; and disabling the battery cable. The failure progressed. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 60,000.

We have had two 2006 Trailblazers and both of them have been nothing but problems for us. The first one we brought we owned it for six months and we had it in the shop six times (broken sway bar, heater two times, windshield wiper fluid holder two times, shaky front wheel and motor misfiring. We traded in hopefully to avoid more problems and went ahead after assurance that this one must just be bad and got another 2006 Trailblazer. This one we have only had for 2 months and we're already having problems. Three days after we bought it had to go to the shop for the radio not working properly. Then the engine starting misfiring and the engine light was on and it was running really rough. The tech thought that it was happening because the gas cap wasn't all the way tightened. (when the engine light comes on you loose power and I pulled out in front of a car on the highway and barley moved that's how I found that out. ) when he called me back he said that I had two cracked sparks plugs and the battery cable was loose making it start slowly. That was fixed but then 5-27-07 the engine light came on again and it was running rough just like before. It seems like everytime that the engine gets wet that it makes it misfire. I told the dealership this several times now. It had been raining that day. Everytime I take it in for the engine they tell me there is a lot of moisture under the hood on the motor. It's in the shop right now.

Consumer started vehicle and shifted to reverse and suddenly smoke came from under the hood, consumer could not get out of vehicle since doors locked upon starting vehicle. She was able to get out through rear passenger door that had not been shut properly. Dealer determined that battery cables shorted out, and shut down electrical system. Dealer was exchanging vehicle.
