Starter Problems of Chevrolet Trailblazer

Chevrolet Trailblazer owners have reported 20 problems related to starter (under the electrical system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Starter problem of the 2008 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 07/07/2017

Traveling at 55 mph on a freeway, engine stopped with no notice. Since the engine stopped, brakes and steering experienced greatly reduced capability. I had to struggle to get the vehicle on to the shoulder in order to avoid an accident. Once stopped, I got no response of any kind from the starter, although I had power to the blower motor, radio, and power windows. After 5 minutes, I was able to get the car started. I turned around to drive home, and 5 minutes later the problem recurred exactly as described above. The vehicle is now in the shop for repair as it is not safe to drive. I presume that I am dealing with a catastrophic ignition system failure of the type that caused gm to issue it's massive recall 5-6 years ago.

2 Starter problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 09/05/2016

The contact owns a 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer ext. While driving various speeds, the vehicle would stall and shut off without warning. The vehicle would have to be jumpstarted in order to restart. The failure recurred, but the vehicle would not restart. The contact took the vehicle to a certified mechanic who was unable to identify the cause of the failure. The mechanic replaced the vehicle's battery, auxiliary water pump, starter, and alternator; however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

4 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 07/15/2011

My 2003 chevy Trailblazer does not start. There is no specific time, place, or event that leads to the vehicle not starting every couple of weeks the vehicle just doesn’t start. I will let the truck sit for an hour or so then attempt to start it, then it does start. I have taken it to the dealer and they couldn’t duplicate the issue I was having. I did some research online and others have suggested it could be the battery, temperature sensor, ignition switch, or starter. I have replaced all but the starter but the problem persists. I have been told that the starter is good so I am at a loss as to why the problem keeps occurring.

5 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 05/31/2011

I am the original owner of a 2003 chevy Trailblazer. When I first purchased the vehicle in the month of October/2002, I didn't experience any problems until maybe the fourth year, going on its 5th; right before the warranty was about to expire. The first problem I encountered with the vehicle was the transmission. It didn't want to change gears properly. Because of the 5 year warranty, the dealership was able to fix that problem, at that time. Today, I continue to experience transmission problems: with a loud noise, a struggle in horse power and a vibration when I am at a complete stop. I have spent so much money on other electrical parts as well. I have purchased over ten light bulbs for rear brake lights that continue to malfunction. I recently replaced a relay because the head lights would constantly go out after the vehicle was turned on. I replaced the fan clutch and water pump because they both went out. I also replaced a battery and two starters. For the past few months, my vehicle smells like fuel everytime I turn it on. I am asking that your department look into all of these claims. It appears that almost everyone that owes a 2003 Trailblazer has been experiencing the same issues, but yet; no one is doing enough to protect all those consumers who have been grateful to this country in purchasing american made vehicles. A sincere thanks.

6 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 01/30/2011

My 2003 Trailblazer ext. Would not start today, all dash lights come on but gas and voltage gauge dont register. Keys and key fobs are not recognized also only says unkown driver . It will not crank at all or even make noise, battery, alternator, starter and all fuses have been checked and are good. There is no security light that stays on and my key will remove from the ignition! front door windows and door locks will not work or radio. . . . . All lights, a/c, back windows, sunroof, power seats work!. . . . . . . Have not been able to find problem.

7 Starter problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 01/16/2011

The problem is on my 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer. The entire dash gauges malfunction occassionally, from speedometer to battery gauge to oil pressure gauge to water temp gauge to rpm gauge. I am one of thousands of Trailblazer owners who have this problem not only in the USA, but around the world, just read the forum on edmunds. Com and you will see. I usually temporarily fix this problem but turning the vehicle on and off untill the gauges fully reset, but that puts a lot of strain on the starter. Please open an investigation to trigger a recall because chevy dealers want us owners to shell out $100 to figure out the problem we already know and then want to gouge us for another $700-$1000 to fix. That is totally uncalled for, for a part on the vehicle which is vital to drivers, the instrument gauges.

8 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 09/08/2010

In 2010 I had to have the ignition starter switch because my 2003 Trailblazer would not start. This cost 300. 00 plus the tow charge. On may 7th. 2015 I had to have the same switch replaced again, now not two weeks later the ignition switch is acting up again. I called general motors and they said there was no recall on my Trailblazer, and I could contact my local Chevrolet dealer and see if they can tell me what I can do. I know what that information will be, bring it in and they will repair it, and that will cost me several hundred dollars. Thanks to general motors.

9 Starter problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 06/10/2010

After starting my vehicle sometimes the rpm gauge will not move, like the vehicle has not started, this has caused me to turn the key again causing my starter to make an awful sound, since the car was already running, rpm gauge however was not functioning. My speedometer will start out at 0 like normal but then will stick and go back down to 0 which doesn't allow me to see the speed I am going, at times it will stick around 40 mph. The fuel gauge does not work it always says I am empty. Which brings me to my final point, my odometer has started sticking, I gauge my gas mileage by my odometer, this could be a serious problem since the odometer is sticking, I could be thinking I have enough gas when in reality I do not, this could cause me to run out of gas, not to my own error but due to the malfunctioning gauges, which could cause me to stall and be rear ended. I travel on the interstate almost everyday and I am seriously concerned for my safety and the safety of other drivers.

10 Starter problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 01/08/2009

2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer 76k miles 1. Instrument panel intermittently malfunctions under normal operating conditions, the speedometer will not register correct speed and will move past 120 mph when in park (needle pointing straight down), sounds like a popping or crackling noise from instrument panel at times. I thought this problem was more prone to happen more with very cold or very hot temperature outside but now also happens no matter what the temperature is outside. Only way I have found to get speedometer back to zero is to start engine and turn off engine after minute or so - this process could take starting/re-starting 20 to 30 times to get speedometer back to zero. Bad for starter and consumes too much gasoline to continue doing this. 2. Service engine soon light comes on intermittently under normal operating conditions. All electrical (lights, radio, a/c, etc. ) cut offs and engine cuts off when driving under normal conditions - sometimes this occurs while driving and sometimes occurs when slowing to stop at a traffic light. At times I will smell a burning smell like something electrical is burning. I immediately pull over, turn off the car and check under the hood but cannot see anything burning however I smell it. After the vehicle sits for a few minutes it can be restarted and I do not smell the burning smell. I am a single mom with college/high school children (ages 25, 22, 17) living at home and I have a 7 month old grandchild at home. I am on a very limited budget and do not have money to repair either of these problems as the vehicle is out of warranty. Both of these issues are safety issues. There are tons of complaints regarding chevy Trailblazers on the internet. When will gm be held accountable for manufacturing and selling lemons!?! gm needs to accept responsibility and repair these lemons - the consumer's safety is at stake here.

13 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 07/24/2007

We purchased our 2003 Trailblazer ext used this summer. It had about 50,000 miles on it. We've noticed that when we're on the road for over 2 hours at a time, the speedometer becomes dangerously unreliable. Most recently, my husband was pulled over for an unsafe low speed -- until the state policeman saw that the speedometer was registering 20 miles an hour with the car in park and the engine turned off. We have had multiple failures. Resetting is sometimes possible by continually restarting the car, but not always, and not with any reliability. By continually restarting I'm talking 30-50 restarts. The wear and tear on the starter therefore is unacceptable. This vehicle should be covered by the recall, but we've not been notified and when we've taken it to dealerships, we haven't even been notified of the recall. The problem has no other discernible pattern and has happened approximately 6 times in the 8 months we've had the car.

14 Starter problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 03/13/2006

- the contact stated that the 2006 Chevrolet Trailblazer had stalling problems which started back in March 2006. The contact stated that while driving 30-40 mph the vehicle would lose all power. The contact took vehicle to dealership, and they found nothing wrong with the vehicle. She stated that on 04/06 she had to have vehicle towed to another dealership, the vehicle would not start. The contact stated that they couldn't find anything wrong either. They did replace the starter at that time, but the failure continued to happen, and now the radio has shorted out and caused the vehicle to lose power. The dealership replaced the radio. On 12/23/06, the vehicle lost power again while driving 10-15 mph and trying to make a right turn. The vehicle was towed to dealership again, they found nothing wrong again. The contact stated that this was a safety issue, especially while driving on the freeway. The contact stated that she filed a complaint with the manufacturer, # 71-426356150. The contact stated that someone from their legal department caller her and stated that they will have someone come out and look at her vehicle in mid February.

15 Starter problem of the 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 09/22/2004

2005 cheverlot Trailblazer has had an issue since I purchased it in 2004 with stalling out. However over the last 4 years I have had an issue of no start. . . Everything has been replaced by the dealer ignition switch, alternator, starter, exhaust, etc. . . . Last result was the pcm powertrain module supposedly the brains of the car. However the same day it stalled again, most recently my dealership took it for a week and said they could not reduplicate issue. So there again I am at the same place where the car will be fine for weeks then do a no start untill after serveral attempts and smell of gas finally the car will start. Chevrelot Trailblazer have known this problem for awhile has done nothing about it . . . Resolve the issue and do a recall spent over $10,000 on just maintenance. . What is chevy going to do about this issue? ## VIN failed ##.

16 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 09/18/2004

Went out to start vehicle on September 18, 2004 - tuned key and nothing happened, no starter motor, no dashboard lights, nothing. Key remianed locked in steering column, could not be removed. Tried again the next morning (9/19) - same thing. Tried again the next morning (Monday, 9/20). The same thing - at that point called dealer to tow vehicle. About 3 hours later the tow truck came - tow truck operator got in vehicle turned key - and vehicle started right up just as if nothing was ever wrong! . Still had vehicle towed to dealership - dealer checked behicle over and found nothing wrong. On Saturday, October 23rd, came out of bank after running errnad, turned key in vehicle - nothing happened again. Kept turning key off and on for about 10 minutes until vehicle started out of the blue. Drove straight to dealer. Dealer replaced ignition switch. Vehicle worked fine until Sunday, January 23rd. Went to start vehicle and one again, nothing happened, no lights, no starter - nothing. Key also locked in steering column. Dealer towed vehicle the next day. Dealer could find nothing wrong, theorized an interior light was left on (but I know it wasn't). Dealer replaced some engine fan they theorize was turning on after engine turned off and draining battery - I told them that's fine but doesn't explain why truck will start days after an initial failure. This intermittent failure is frightening as it seems to be a possible part of a larger system failure - as noted on this website by other owners - when the Trailblazer will fail at high speeds on the highway. (reference odi id numbers 10101741 & 10060860).

17 Starter problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 04/06/2004

My 2003 Trailblazer will not crank up all the time. It will not even turnover sometimes other times it will turn over and stop. This has happened on numerous occassions for the past 8 months. I beleive gm is waiting for the warrenty to expire. They have replaced my ignition system and fuel system. It still has problems with intermittent cranking. It has happened at the dealership and that is why my ignition system was replaced. Gm does not want to do anything. I have been stranded numerous times due to this problem. They got my money and that is all they care about. Please anyone I need help. Where else do I turn.

18 Starter problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

19 Starter problem of the 2004 Chevrolet Trailblazer

Failure Date: 11/14/2003

On 4 separate occasions vehicle stalled. When this occurred consumer tried to restart vehicle, but it wouldn't restart. Also, keys were stuck in the ignition. As a result, battery was drained. Dealership has replaced automatic transmission shift lock control, battery fuses , programmed the calibration for the engine control module, the starter, and its relay switch.
