36 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 04/25/2022

When an adult passenger >100lb is sitting in the front passenger seat, the service airbag light comes on and the dashboard says "service airbag". This lasts for 30-60 seconds at random times at all speeds from 0 to 60+ mph. The dealer reported that this will cost roughly $1000 for labor in addition to the heavily backordered part costing $400 and not being available for weeks.

37 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 04/08/2022

I filed a complaint in 2019, it prompted an investigation. Nhtsa action number: pe19013 I had not heard back from NHTSA or gm so I searched the NHTSA website and found that an agreement was made to close the investigation, in part because gm has instituted a cost reduction program for the repair/replacement of the pss in the subject vehicles. Based on this cost reduction program as well 1) a comparatively low warranty rate; 2) no reported injuries, deaths or asymmetric deployments; and 3) the age of the vehicles; odi is closing this preliminary evaluation. " when I attempted to have my vehicle repaired, the dealership didn't know what I was talking about. I contacted gm headquarters to inquire about the cost reduction program and I was told that they would look into it and get back with me. They denied me, they outright lied to NHTSA to close the investigation. My car still has an airbag problem and I am asking NHTSA to take enforcement action. Since they lied, I believe a fitting remedy would be for gm to pay 100% of the repair. After all, it's the very same thing that happened with the Chevrolet malibu that prompted a recall. Thank you, sincerely, earlh. Johnston iii.

39 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Airbag service light comes on for unknown reason. This appears to be a very common problem amongst chevy Volt owners (2012-2013). Why no recall for this serious safety issue?.

40 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

Regular faulty warnings referring to air bag component.

41 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 01/01/2022

The passenger side seat airbag sensor is malfunctioning. A message displaying “service airbag” comes up and the airbag light comes on. This happens numerous times during a typical drive (around 20 minutes) the airbag is turned off while the message and light is displayed. This issue has been occurring for about a year or two now. Starting around 90k miles, currently has 111k miles. I’ve done my research on this issue and many other Volt owners have this issue. Which is caused by a defect in the passenger side sensor mat in the seat that can fold over itself with normal use, causing the issue.

42 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/02/2021

The dashboard airbag warning light comes on, and the dashboard says "service airbag". The car chimes, and it (the message and light) usually goes away within 10 seconds. If it stays, when I push down on the passenger seat and then let go the message will go away, and the airbag light will go off. This condition happens when there is a passenger and when there is not a passenger and is an intermittent fault. More and more reports of this issue are becoming more common. History codes in the passenger presence system point to the passenger seat sensor. In order to solve the issue, you have to replace the sensor in the seat. The sensor replacement requires a tech to remove the seat, open it, change the part and then reinstall it. This service charges ~$1,200 at my dealership. This is a safety issue that has been well-documented in a large number of official reports, and reports online. This is also something that gm knows about and is refusing to fix on affected vehicles.

43 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/04/2021

Our 2014 chevy Volt began to rarely give an audible chime with a: "service airbag" message on the driver information center display, as well as the "passenger airbag" overhead panel display showing "on"-"off"-"on", spontaneously back in 2018. Again, this was rare, but concerning. This became somewhat more common in the months that followed and is now a common annoyance on every drive. Because of personal circumstances, as well as the coronavirus pandemic, we have not driven this vehicle much over the past couple of years, and we have not taken the car in for service. It has not yet been inspected by any other entity other than myself. The alarms happen whether the passenger seat is occupied or not. I have read on the gm-volt online forum that this is likely caused by a defective passenger detection pad in the passenger seat, but I have personally checked the seat wiring harness and connector, and they appear to be nominal. Obviously, having an inoperative passenger airbag system is a significant safety concern. We ordered the car, and it was delivered new in December, 2013. There has never been a spill, leak, or any damage to any of the seats or airbag system of this vehicle. We intend to report the problem to our dealer, "bob steele Chevrolet" in cocoa, FL within the next week. Our car is readily available for inspection at any time.

44 Air Bag problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/03/2021

The vehicle’s service airbag warning light is illuminated. The dealership diagnostic indicates that the passenger seat sensor needs to be replaced. Based on my research, this was also an issue with the Volt’s 1st gen models.

45 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/18/2021

Service airbag is turning on.

46 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/11/2021

Seat sensor for passenger air bag is not working. It picks up a passenger and turns on air bag then turns it off. Then back on then off. Getting service airbag light. I see this was investigated by NHTSA and chevy was supposed to build a replacement program for 12-13 Volts but when I call chevy they see no such program even though it is reported as a known consumer concern and was part of agreement when closing NHTSA investigation as per articles on this from journalist.

47 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/01/2021

The contact owns a 2013 Chevrolet Volt. The contact stated upon starting the vehicle, the air bag message “service air bag” and the air bag warning light was illuminated on the instrument panel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed that the passenger’s side seat air bag sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and advised the contact that they could not assist as his VIN was not included in a recall related to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 150,000.

48 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/01/2021

Seat airbag sensor malfunctioning: looked up issue on forum and found reference to NHTSA action number pe19013.

49 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/17/2021

The dashboard airbag warning light comes on, car chimes, and front passenger air bag status changes between on/off intermittently when there is someone sitting in the front passenger seat. I'm afraid the airbag system is faulty and won't deploy when needed. This is an ongoing problem.

50 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/06/2021

The "service airbag" light starting coming on. I took the car to the dealership and they said that the harness in the driver's seat has a bad sensor or plug and cannot be replaced because gm no longer makes this part. They suggested that I might try to find a replacement seat in a junkyard. This means I have car that is less than 10 years old with a driver's side airbag that may or may not deploy in an accident. The dealership does not have a solution.

51 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 07/01/2021

Passenger pressence module failure resulting in faulty passenger side airbag failure and a failed state inspection. Repair quoted as $1100 plus tax.

53 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/02/2021

Whenever any weight is applied to the passenger seat, a service airbags error comes up and the red airbag signal illuminates signaling that the aibag is turned off for passengers. There is no information on how to turn it back on.

54 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/01/2021

The air bag service light would come on if the passenger leave the car in parking mode, the light will clear itself after some time. Search online and found it's a very common problem in 2012/2013 chevy Volt because of a faulty sensor under the seat, I think gm should do a recall for this since it's a design/manufacture fault.

55 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/01/2021

If nobody is in the passenger seat it gives a warning to check the airbag. If someone is in the seat there is no issue. I’ve seen others report this online and it appears to be a $1,200 defect. People won’t pay to repair this so it becomes a safety issue.

56 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 04/04/2021

My car has about 76k miles on it and suddenly gives a warning about "service airbag" on 4/4/2021. I have not been in a wreck, sped over potholes, or have any damage to my car so I am unsure why this light has been activated (I received this warning prior to leaving my driveway that afternoon). It is the passenger airbag that is having this problem.

57 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 03/01/2021

We began receiving the intermittent warning message "service airbag" on our 2012 chevy Volt at around 65,000 miles, and are continuing to receive it at 69,000 miles. Research reveals that other Volt owners have encountered the same problem. Cost of repair: $1,000. It appears to be a manufacturer sensor defect that requires a recall.

58 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 01/04/2021

Service air bag came on display. Seems like this is a common and costly problem with 2013 Volts. Is there any way this fix can be covered?.

59 Air Bag problem of the 2015 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 12/30/2020

"service airbag" warning on 2015 Volt, which apparently is a well-known issue for which general motors refuses to take any responsibility. Airbags should not be a concern on car--ever. They want over $800 for the repair when it is clearly a manufacturing defect.

60 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 11/02/2020

The service airbag message appears randomly when in motion. The chevy dealer states that the problem is the passenger presence system. The estimated cost to repair is $1,300.

61 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 10/02/2020

63 Air Bag problem of the 2014 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/21/2020

Ca has only been driven 20k miles and always garaged. Recenlty, about a week ago, the "service airbag" light came on. The ealership has told me it's a known issue but it's not covered by any recalls or warranties!.

64 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Getting a message alert "service airbag" for the passenger airbag. It will turn off and on when a passenger is seated. Extremely dangerous and seems to be a common issue. I think chevy is at fault and should fix the issue at their expense.

65 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

In mid 2020 I began to get an intermittent warning of a problem with the passenger side, front seat occupant sensor. The problem has become much more frequent. The gm service department was familiar with the problem in 2020, but said there was no recall. If the passenger moves around the sensor will activate or deactivate. I assume that the airbag would not dependably deploy in an accident. Today I discovered a discussion of this problem in the gm-volt forum. The forum mentions the same problem with other gm models. This is obviously a safety and manufacturing issue. Repairs are quoted in the $800 to $1,000+ range with no guarantee the problem won't reoccur.

66 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 09/01/2020

Intermittent service airbag warnings.

67 Air Bag problem of the 2012 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/27/2020

My passenger seat frequently generates a service airbag warning. The last time I talked to a dealer rep about this, I was told it was caused by a faulty "passenger presence module. " as I am out of my bumper to bumper warranty, the cost to fix is over $800. I've also seen numerous complains on Volt forums about this same issue.

68 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/05/2020

The airbag for the passenger seat is faulty and turns off and on, took it to the dealership and they said it was a $1000 to fix it. Said it was a bad wiring harness.

69 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 08/01/2020

The passenger air bag is intermittently turning off on my 2013 Chevrolet Volt when I have an adult in the front passenger seat. This is very scary as there will be times when the air bag is off for 5 minutes at a time. As well this is a very annoying chime and distracting, and it occurs even when there is no passenger. From my research the cost to repair is roughly $800-$1,000 which minimizes the chances of doing the work as this is an expensive repair.

70 Air Bag problem of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt

Failure Date: 05/04/2020

Hi something happened to my 2013 chevy Volt when I got the message of service airbag and the light of airbag on the dashboard, I took it to oreilly to check the code on it and they said it has two codes of bees 0074 and b0081 which related to passenger presence module. This came on by itself!!.
