While driving at speed of 40 mph all lights on the console began blinking repeatedly, the tachometer and speedometer began going up and down, car began to rapidly decelerate and then died giving me just enough time to get off the side of the road before causing an accident. Turned off ignition and restarted the ignition car gave no indications of malfunction, drove home and have not drove since. If you google "pt cruiser console going crazy" you will see multiple other owners are having the same issue. This is not just a simple malfunction this is a danger to not only the owner but to others on the roadway. Chrysler should be checking into the issue, but instead after contacting them and letting them know others are experiencing the same issue, they told me "unfortunately, we are unable to provide technical assistance to diagnose the situation you have outlined in your email. . . If you have been working with an authorized dealership but the problem is not yet resolved, seeking a second opinion from a different dealer may be a viable option. " which I take to mean take it to a dealership, get charged an outrageous amount for them to see if they know what is wrong, if they still don't know after charging you $600 then take it to another dealership which may know more about our cars than we do. <br>
this is an irresponsible, slipshoddy way to run a company. If we want to have a good reputation for cars then the companies that make them have to stand by them and not try to send their customers off to other dealerships after charging them an arm and a leg and still not knowing how to fix it. They should know their cars better than say a Honda dealership would. I hope other people have posted complaints so that Chrysler will fix this life threatening issue because going from 40 to 0 on a busy road is dangerous!.

The contact owns a 2001 Chrysler Pt Cruiser. The contact stated that he was able to take the key out of the ignition in any position (off, accessory, etc) while the engine was running even if it was not shifted into park. The contact noticed the failure every time he drove the vehicle. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired at the time of the complaint. The contact called the manufacturer who referred him to NHTSA. The current mileage was approximately 95,000. The failure mileage was approximately 73,000.

I have taken my Pt Cruiser into dealer 10-12 times for problems that they are unable to correct. There have been parts loose that needed to be tightened, such as belts, hoses, connections and interior parts that have fallen off the car and dealer does not know how to fix. I submitted a complaint to manufacturer and applied for lemon law, but Chrysler representative did not listen and took dealer side. They claim they cannot duplicate noises, but I recently found out the shop supervisor who has been checking out my car for the noises has a severe hearing loss and a claim against insurance company for hearing problems. There are high pitch whining noises, squeals and loud screeching noises coming from the engine compartment. The car loses power and seems to hesitate at freeway speeds. There is also a noise that sounds like a train whistle in the distance. I have heard popping sounds in the front end and squealing and screeching sounds from the brakes and under hood is constant. There is also a noise that is heard sometimes in steering and turning. The dealer told me they would replace the power steering unit to see if it would solve the problems and ordered the part. When I took the car in for the service, they said they could not duplicate the noise again and did not do anything. When I step on the brakes the noise is so loud it can be heard for a long distance. It sounds like cars being crushed. The noise is also present in turning corners and driving, but worse in stepping on brakes. The dealer acknowledges a brake problem but say they do not know how to fix it. There have been other problems such as radio/cd player did not work when new, sensor light replaced, rattles under dash, check engine light, etc, but the noises and in-ablility to repair have me worried about serious problems. They hear the noise, but then tell me the mechanic cannot duplicate and do nothing to repair. This has been an ongoing problem since I got the vehicle in 2003.

Lock cylinder for ignition key broken in steering column. Key would not turn and steering wheel locked up. I am concerned that if the lock cylinder broke while operating the vehicle, the steering wheel may lock up causing the driver to lose control.
After parking and turning the vehicle off and removing the key, the vehicle continued to run with the key removed, the vehicle was able to run for 3 minutes to an hour before it shut off. The dealer had examined the vehicle 3 times and was unable to find the problem.
Key taken out of ignition and motor still running/ no method to turn car off. Mr.
While driving at any speed ignition light came on, and vehicle stalled. This problem occurred four times since 2001. Dealer examined the vehicle numerous times ,and could not find the cause of the problem.
