2 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2010 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 07/25/2014

I have experienced steering problems and an airbag light on since I purchased this used 2010 Sebring in June 2013 at the "naples Dodge/Chrysler" dealership. The car had/has popping creaking noises that came from the front end. I did some research and found out that Chrysler has recalls on 2010 Sebrings regarding the power steering (NHTSA campaign # 10va75000). I took in in to be checked. The naples dedge service manager told me that my car model was not involved with the recall. Naples Dodge did find a problem with the steering and replaced the steering gear, rack and pinion and adjusted the toe and alignment. The used car warrantee paid for it except for my $50 deductible. Since this repair the airbag light remains on. I was told by the dealer serviceman that the light would go off after a while. It has never gone off. I had it checked twice and have been given two opinions on the air bag light. 1. It's ok ignore it 2. I have no airbag protection. I trust #2 mechanic and feel unsafe in this car, unlike any of the cars I've had in the past 45 years. To this day the steering feels funny, makes little popping noises, and the light is still on and Chrysler has a new recall for airbags (NHTSA 14v35400). Lets see if the Dodge/Chrysler dealership takes any responsibility? I have had numerous expensive repairs with this 2010 Sebring. I used to own a 2005 Sebring and I had few problems and loved the car. Since fiat took over Chrysler there are numerous complaints, according to mechanics and the general public. I believe the car has been engineered to fail. I have about $4,000 in repairs to prove it. I will never buy a Chrysler again.

9 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1997 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 04/23/2005

On April 23, 2005, my son was traveling to work, about 12:30 in the afternoon, traveling westbound on the 210 freeway. At some point, his left rear tire went flat. His car lost control and spun counterclockwise, across four lanes of traffic, and head on into the center divider. His car continued to spin in the same dirrection and impacted again at the right rear quarterpanel, and the right rear bumper. My son got out of the car, and the chp arrived within ten minutes to have his car towed. I contacted daimler Chrysler to let them know what happened and to express my concern. They sent an inspector to the salvage yard. Two weeks later I got a letter from Chrysler saying that their recalled upper ball joint had nothing to do with the crash. I had a mechanic examine the vehicle, he had it lifted up with a forklift, and showed me the rack and pinion that was dangling down on the passenger side. He said that since there was no structural damage to the rest of the undercarraige, the broken steering was what caused my son's car to spin out of control, and crash into the median, injuring him, and threatening the other commuters.

17 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 2003 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 12/26/2002

I purchased a 2003 Chrysler Sebring on Nov 11, 2002. On Dec. 26, 2003 I was driving home at about 0730. My car suddenly pulled to the left, like a magnet was pulling . I had no control of the stairing, I tried to slow the car down by down shifting the gears. The only thing that brought that car to a stop was the curve on the other side of the road. This was right before the curve. The manufacture was nasty. My insurance stated, "there was a complete brake in the rack and that it was unlikely caused by collision. This break caused the collison. Their was no body damage or no tire damage to the car according to yhe collion people. However , since I did hit the curve , the dealer decided to tow the car collsion place. My car was healed up for 22 days. The manufacture pulled the rack out of the stairing colume. ,to investagate. They said they coud not tell whether or not who fault it was. They said they woul fix the problem for a good will gesture. I want a new car. The accident was vey tramatic. I am afraid to drive this car. I will go to the media if I have to. I need help! what can I do.

18 Steering Rack And Pinion problem of the 1997 Chrysler Sebring

Failure Date: 10/28/2002

Driving at approx. 15 mph the steering system failed/locked on my car. The car was towed to the dealer on 10/28/02, and was initially diagnosed a "failure of the power steering pump". The dealer replaced the pump, and during the mechanic testing found that the newly replaced pump also immediately failed and steering again locked. The dealer then diagnosed the problem as being a total failure of the "rack" which needed replacement as it had "failed and was contaminating the pumps". Both the power steering rack and power steering pump was replaced at a cost to me of $1728. 33 parts/labor. The dealer service representative admitted to me that they had seen such failures before, and that the failure was not a result of my maintainence of this vehicle. In fact, I have vigorously maintained the vehicle with this dealer since its purchase on 6/30/97 - and they have performed all scheduled minor and major services. Yet, since I was just outside of the 5 year/50k mile warranty, the dealer refused to cover any of the labor/parts charges for the replacement. I then contacted damiler chrylser's customer service center on this matter. Daimler Chrysler confirmed that there were no vehicle recalls for rack/pump failures, and held no responsibility. They were uninterested in any discussion of defects, or risk if the failures occurred at highway speeds. If my failure had occurred under those circumstances, rather than on a residential street, there would have been injuries or fatalities since there was no ability to turn or control the steering of the vehicle. Chrysler may not be interested in customer satisfaction, but I would have hoped that they would have some concern for such dangerous failures. Dt.

Steering rack makes clanking/rattling noise when turning over rough pavement. Can be felt through steering column. Service technicians at dealer heard noise but could not initially identify it. They drove 4 other 2001 Sebring sedans and heard same noise. Contacted Chrysler and were told it was steering rack. I wrote letter to Chrysler and was told that noise is a "characteristic of the car. " I am very concerned since steering is involved. Would like this problem fixed and not told "they all do it. ".

They finally found that the steering rack was broken. They claimed to have fixed the problem. About 1 1/2 weeks later was turning corner at busy intersection. Right wheel turned inward and locked.
