94 problems related to electrical system have been reported for the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Instrument cluster started spazing out then smelled wires burning. Resulted in the body control module catching fire.
My windshield wipers will turn on by themselves or stop working when they are in use. This also causes the headlights not ot work and some of the dashboard lights to light up. This is caused by water somehow getting under the fuse box and shorts the wires out. This has happened to me while driving on a busy highway in the rain. I never know when this is going to happen and it is very dangerous.
During a heavy traffic on hwy the engine died casing me to stop in the middle not being able to merge right or left. After several months of investigation, I found out that the electrical harness that powers the injectors was not well insulated causing the wires to melt. The ecu didn't record any codes which led me to start the repair by elimination. The ecu was replaced and programmed because no codes were registered. The coil pack was replaced because of the random firing loss. The fuel pump was replaced because the new spark plugs were completely dry, and finally after replacing all sensors, the harness was checked for corrosion that where I found this section of the harness melted.
Driving on streets and freeway it will all of a sudden die. Dies when you put it in reverse. Open side doors flashers come on. Check engine comes on disconnect battery for about an hour the engine light will be gone. Happens out of the blue sometimes scary. But it happens every outing we take. .
I own a 05 town and country and the electrical system has been failing though the entire vehicle from the radio shorting out, headlights flicking on and off, rear sensors failing, upper display above the mirror gone black where the temp. And miles till empty controls are. On top of that the car is now randomly stalling while driving has me in fear to drive it with my kids. I have read hundreds of reports about this same issue with not only this year but all the way up through 2012. My mechanic has changed the erg valve and many other parts but there has got to be a bigger issue. Cars should not be stalling out while driving. If you look into all the complaints about this specific car stalling randomly you will see that there is a huge issue with this in many years of this car and someone is going to get hurt if they haven't already due to this issue with this specific make and model. I am requesting a full investigation into all the reports on this issue scattering the internet and I hope action is taken to save lives. When the car stalls while driving the power steering and brakes fail and is extremely dangerous.
Vehicle in motion or stationary. Gauge cluster flutters, tach, fuel, temp gauge have erratic movement fluttering up and down at a rapid rate. Speedometer not affected when in motion. Fluttering can be activated on it's own, or turn signal, power window switch or brake switch can cause the fluttering of gauges as well, at some points, fluttering becomes so bad, it will restart the radio and cause the dash warning lights to flicker as well (oil light, seat belt light etc. . . ). I have a video of this happening on my dash but it looks like only images are allowed to be uploaded. Happens at any time. 5 miles, 100 miles, 50 miles etc. . . This is my 2nd Mini van that this has happened on and eventually it gets so bad that vehicle will refuse to start. The other Mini van that this has done this one was a 2006 Chrysler town and country also. VIN for that vehicle can be provided as well if need be, or a separate report can be made on that vehicle. Only one date can be selected on this form but this problem has been ongoing for about 3 months now.

We just bought this van and the two previous owners said locks hasn't worked correctly since 2005.

Interior and exterior lights flicker to varying degrees on an intermittent basis. This electrical problem sometimes causes the engine to die while car is in transit thereby creating a safety issue. It also is a danger and annoyance to oncoming traffic at night. Several entities have attempted to correct this problem, including attempts by my local Chrysler dealer. No one has been able to fix the problem. It is still ongoing as of 2-16-16 and began shortly after I purchased the car in 2007.
Unstable dash, warning lights, cut off while idling, traction control circuit. As described in many postings from other customers as far back as 1996. As described in the post. These problems are well known to Chrysler and their dealerships but you receive no help in solving these problems without spending $$$$ and still no relief. . Read more...
My 2005 Chrysler town and country has an issue: the sash and engine totally shuts down. When it shuts down, all the lights, mileage display, drive selector, and radio resets to it default. The speedometer and tach needles go to zero and the engine shuts down. When this happens I have to get the car stopped so that I can put into park in order to restart the engine. After a few minutes the power comes back up and the needs on the speedometer and tack start recycling. When mechanics from firestone and a local Chrysler dealer here attempted to find the issue, there were no codes to trace.
After filling up gas tank, vehicle stalls and jerks. A little while later, it may shut down entirely or the vehicle may stall again while pressing the accelerator. Vehicle has shut down on major road and stalled badly on main highway.

I was making a left turn and the steering wheel was hard to turn left, not to the right. While turning left the steering colum made a load noise. When I parked took the key out the switch the motor continued to run for about 3-5 seconds before it stoped. When I came out of the store cranked up and went straight home slowly and the left turn was still hard to make and when I stoped in my drive way I put the vehicle in park and took the key out the motor ran for about another 5 seconds. I checked the power steering fluid , the oil and coolent all looked okey I waited about 15 min. And cranked the vehicle up the key seem to turn farther than normal but it cranked up okey,so I shut it back off took the key out and the motor ran another 3 -5 sec. I put the key back in the switch and the radio and mileage started flashing on and off so I took the key out and talked to a mechanic about it.
My headlights go on and off all the time they even flicker sometimes by turning headlight switch on and off they come back on doesn't happen all the time sometimes I'll be driving and headlights will just go off by flipping switch off and on a few times they come back on.

I was driving g south on interstate 35 as I was entering the intersection where interstate 35 , 80 , 235 meet a semi hauling what looked like gravel was merging onto 235 at the same time I was . All of a sudden all my vehicle lighting went dark and the truck driver saw me. . I was frantically trying to get them on and I did not see him and just when he merged he saw me and slammed on his brakes . Resulting in my vehicle being pelted with sand and rock . My wind shield had numerous dings in it and since it was totally dark I didn't notice them till it was to late to stop him . My lights go off and on and until it's fixed I can't drive after dark. I went to the local Chrysler dealer only to find out it was not covered under any warranty and since I am a disabled veteran I do not have the money at this time to get the lights fixed and now the windshield is cracked.

My Chrysler Town & Country costantly has issues with flickering lights, wacked out speedometer, all lights in dash go haywire including headlights. Sometimes the engine shuts down temporarily while driving or even fails at stoplights. Well a while ago I had taken my son to the doctors and on the way home my van started acting up so bad that the engine completely shut down including power steering and caused me to go into the next lane and luckily we weren't hit by another driver! after sitting there in the middle of the lane during rush hour for about 10 minutes it finally decided to start up but this is now a constant issue. After seeing so many complaints with the same issue I don't understand how the manufacturer is getting away with no recall. I fear for my safety every day and have already forked way too much money into it trying to find a solution to the problem. Please anybody having the same issue please file a complaint in hopes that they will issue a recall. Thanks.
My headlights, odometer & prnd21 began flickering intermittently. Condition worsened and gauges would turn off and back on, warning lights would flicker off & on, radio cuts out. Condition has progressed - now van has stalled out while driving three times. Battery is good, grounds are connected. This complaint seems to be common, yet dealerships do not seem to have repair information from Chrysler. Stalling while driving is dangerous - Chrysler should help identify a solution and issue a service bulletin.
The contact owns a 2005 Chrysler town and country. While making a right turn, the vehicle stalled several times without warning. Also, upon using the power windows to roll down the windows, the window failed to roll back up intermittently. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was not available.
Vehicle was running while parked. Smoke started coming from the steering column and air vents with a burning electrical smell. Got out of car to check under hood and airbag deployed. Turned the key off and found a fuse in the fuse box had melted. Car would then start, but die within seconds. The power door locks and radio would would not work, but the power windows would.
My power locks do not work with the fob or with the inside power lock button. I've read so many complaints online about this exact issue that it is actually making me more angry. The door looks are a pretty basic feature of a vehicle. Not to mention the fact that people don't normally buy minivans unless they have kids etc. We have 3 kids and not having this door lock feature is ridiculous. By the way, it makes the automatic opening doors pretty useless, bc they won't unlock!.
I was driving when vehicle suddenly shut down completely. I had no power whatsoever. Was unable to steer or brake the vehicle. The van rolled through a stop sign and stop light before stopping completely. It was about ten minutes before I could start it up again. Now I do not trust the vehicle. I am afraid of driving the vehicle. Feel like I had a brush with death. Prior to this incident, about two weeks beforehand, all lights on the vehicle stopping working while I was driving at night. I purchased new bulbs to replace the headlights but suddenly all of the lights started to work again.
While driving engine shut off all functions, steering and power brakes failed to work. Once stopped placed van into park. After stopping, van started. Same event happened 3 more times in a mile 5 drive.
The contact owns a 2005 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the key fob failed to lock and unlock the rear doors. Since about March of this year, our van headlamps will not turn on with the switch. It takes playing with the switch several times before they go on. Recently the headlights randomly go off as we are driving, we have to pull over and play with the switch to get the lights to go on. Also as we park and turn the car off, sometimes the headlights or the dash lights will go on by themselves. Currently we are having to jump the car often as if there is a drain on the battery. We took the battery to the location where it was bought and they tested the system, and battery and charging system passed all test. In other incidents which may or not be related our power sliding doors are not working properly. The left side does not function at all, and the right side closes and opens when the button is depressed. It takes two tries before it locks properly. When we take the van to the local dealer they know nothing of these issues, and have been quoted $300-600 to repair each incidents. We appreciate any and all assistance regarding these issues.
2005 Chrysler town and country power door locks & radio/dvd player inoperative. The power locks have stopped working at different intervals. Pulling the 20a iod fuse and reinserting it after 10 minutes or pulling the cable off of the battery for 10 minutes ** not*** fixed the problem so far. Van is currently in shop and we were told it was the fuse box module.
