The headrest on the passenger side of the vehicle spontaneously deployed without warning while I was driving one day. There was no accident, sudden stop, or anything of the sort. It simply occurred while driving. Thank god no one was riding in the passenger seat at the time. After it happened, my husband and I looked up this issue online and discovered hundreds of folks that stated the exact same thing happened to them in their Chrysler vehicles. This headrest is supposed to be a safety feature (which we knew nothing about), but it seems to be the exact opposite. The plastic holding the pin in place simply broke. There is no way to push the headrest back together, so now it is sitting deployed causing the passenger's head to be pushed forward.

My 8 year old son leaned with his hand on the back of the driver side head rest. The head rest released shooting forward. Upon trying to reset the headrest I noticed the plastic piece needed to hold the spring mount to lock it was broke thus not allowing me to reset the headrest. The car was parked and off while this happened.
The headrest broked by itself, the plastic of the mechanism cracked causing the headrest to be hold in place just by the material. The vehicle was parked, not involved in accident or anything else.
The headrest active restraint system deployed while sitting in our driveway. The plastic piece that holds the pin broke.
While driving on the freeway the active head restraint deployed. There was no impact, just deployed without cause.
On July 3, 2020 I was sitting at a red light at night when my driver side headrest deployed/exploded without any warning, my vehicle was not in motion at the time. No injuries but headrest is defective now. I would have been injured if I was resting on it at the time without a doubt.
Driver headrest exploded while driving.
Tl the contact owns a 2014 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that the center seat headrest failed to remain upright, instead pointing toward the front windshield. The contact called earnhardt Chrysler Dodge Jeep ram dealer located at 1521 e. Drivers way, gilbert, az 85297, and was informed that there was no recall on the vehicle. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that there was no recall and that the warranty had expired. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 115,108.
My 20123 Chrysler town and country has an active head restraint headrest. It moves forward in an accident to lessen the likelihood of whiplash. My driver's side headrest deployed (snapped into the forward position) while the car was parked and turned off. I was picking up a bag from behind the driver's seat when this happened. It was startling to say the least. I was not hurt, but I have read that others who were actually sitting in the driver's seat have been hurt due to the headrest hitting them in the back of the head. I looked at the mechanism that releases the spring-loaded headrest, and it was broken. Several pieces of broken plastic were at the bottom of the headrest box, and a metal bar that serves to hold the headrest in the normal position was at an angle with broken plastic around it. It's pretty clear that the plastic retained the metal bar, and this plastic simply broke and released the headrest to spring forward. In my estimation, the plastic holding the bar was insufficient in strength to serve its function reliably long-term. It's a bad design. Forums on the internet confirm that this failure is not infrequent and sometimes harmful to the person in the seat. The cost of replacement of the headrest is about $700. I would estimate that the repair would take an experienced technician about 15 minutes, so the headrest must be quite pricey. Since the headrest is functionally in the same category as an airbag, and since it can cause physical harm when it suddenly breaks for no cause other then design failure, I believe that the headrest should be recalled. Consumers should not bear the burden of repairing a faulty design in a safety system.

Passenger side seat headrest deployed/exploded for no apparent reason while passenger was in seat. The vehicle was in motion, moving around 40 mph on smooth state/us highway with no change in speed and no collision. It just deployed on its own for no reason.
I was driving down the road and the driver's side headrest deployed and hit me in the back of the head. I thought the tv from the ceiling had fallen down and hit me, it was pretty hard.
Headrest safety feature of deploying forward activated without cause while driving and no outside contact was made.
Wife was driving the car as normal when both active head restraints deployed for no reason. There was no sudden stop, no impact. One blew all the way apart, the other blew half apart, and then blew completely when she touched it to try to assess what the problem was. The cause is simple to determine. The head restraint is a metal pin retained by cheap plastic, and the plastic broke. I have the plastic chips to prove it.
I was sitting in a parking lot and my passenger side headrest deployed. I'm scared my driver's side will be next. Chrysler wanted to charge me $800 to replace it when it was clearly a defective part.
While the car was parked the active headrest deployed hitting the driver in the back of the head after they got in the car and were getting ready to drive off. The metal rod remained in the engaged position in the bracket but the plastic edges that hold the metal rod to the headrest broke which caused it to deploy.
While driving on I-70 in colorado my driver side headrest airbag deployed in my 2013 Town & Country Mini-van. There was nothing happening, we did not hit anything, there were no bumps or reasons for it to deploy. It struck me hard in the back of the head causing whiplash. We pulled over and the head rest locking pin and come out of the inside of the headrest. The reason was the plastic hooks holding it had broken. We pulled it together and wrapped it with a strap.
The driver side headrest's airbag deployed without any particular reason. The van was parked in the driveway, and my wife was taking out her bag from the passenger section when suddenly the headrest deployed.
While stopped at a traffic light, the drivers side headrest unexpectedly burst apart. It seems that the plastic piece inside designed to hold the spring mechanism in the safety restraint system broke.
Passenger side headrest exploded while driving (on a paved road in florida) for no reason. Could have been extremely bad or fatal if their was a passenger setting in the seat.
The passenger side active headrest exploded (luckily just after we got out of the car). There was not a accident that triggered it. The car was parked in our driveway. The engine was turned off. Upon researching I see many complaints of this same issue. This needs to be recalled!.
While getting out of our van, the passenger side active head restraint deployed. After searching online, it appears that this is an ongoing issue with the vehicle. Fortunately, no one was hurt but could have easily been worse.
I was getting in my car in the garage of my home when my active headrest deployed. I wasn't injured but I was certainly startled and now am unsure what to do. The headrest cannot be reset; there are broken pieces which have fallen down inside the plastic casing.
The active headrest on the front passenger seat deployed striking my 14 year old daughter in the head while driving and no accident occurring. Upon inspection, the system did not deploy due the mechanism releasing the pin but rather the plastic that is supposed hold the pin failed resulting in deployment. There is no way to reset the headrest because it is broken. I have serious safety concerns with the driver side potentially failing and deploying in a similar manner. The driver could be struck in the head causing injury or accident. Replacing both headrests would be a significant cost.
Passenger side head rest ejected and will not reset. There were no accidents involve, the vehicle was stationary when the headrest activated. Need to zip tied the head rest back in place. The ve.
Right front seat active headrest deployed with a load bang while vehicle was in motion on a state road. The interior of the active headrest had broken pieces, so it cannot be reset.
On 8/15/19, my 2013 Chrysler town and country front passenger seat head restraint deployed without being involved in a collision. I was in the passenger seat riding under normal conditions on the city street at approximately 25 mph when the headrest popped out and hit me in the head throwing my head forward causing my hat and sunglasses to fly into the dashboard. My neck was sore for a day or 2 but I do not have lingering physical issues that I know of. I contacted Chrysler customer service via the mopar website chat and the customer service representative referred me to my local dealer which quoted me $700 to replace the defective headrest. Upon inspection, the thin plastic mount that retains the metal release bar crumbled causing the headrest to deploy. This is apparently an issue as I have read on car forums hundreds of accounts of this same issue happening to people with this same headrest. I have also read that there is a class action suit that has been filed against Chrysler for this. This is dangerous and could cause a fatal accident if a driver is hit in the head while driving.
I was driving on the highway (going at least 65 mph) and the headrests on the front passenger seat exploded. The air bag light on the dash had been going on and off for the past 2 weeks, I notified Chrysler via telephone with no response. About 1. 5 weeks later the airbag light returned on (intermittently) and then I heard another loud "pop" in the drivers seat but nothing exploded open.
Approximately around 7 pm eastern time on August 8, 2019, I [xxx] was driving 30 mph (city street) and all of suddenly my headrest deployed on me (driver side headrest). Thus, causing my head and neck to shoot forward abruptly. Reminder, no accident or rear collision was taken place. I immediately contacted a local Chrysler dealership and was able to get customer care number. I called and explained the situation and was given a case number and that I would be contacted by a specialist between 2 and 4 days, which I feel like is a horrible time to wait on this serious matter. Was told to leave vehicle in driveway. Another prolonged concern due to the fact that I work. It's been two hours since that incident and beginning to have upper shoulder/neck pain with a headache. If you have any other question, feel free to ask. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Tl the contact owns a 2015 Chrysler town and country. While the contact's spouse was driving approximately 30 mph, the passenger side headrest suddenly exploded, injuring the passenger on the upper back and head. The passenger experienced some pain in that region, but did not receive medical attention. The dealer and manufacturer were not contacted. The failure mileage was 73,203.
On 7/17/2019 while traveling down a local highway the driver side headrest exploded hitting me in the back of the neck. Pulled off road immediately. Proceeded to the dealership of purchase. Licensed Chrysler service person attempted to re-set. Determined headrest was broken and they would order new. Did not tell us there is a class action suit in the process regarding these headrests. Thankfully no serious injury, other than a headache and dizzy which lasted about 3 hours. Was informed item is back ordered and no idea when it will be available. Maybe next year. We travel to FL in the fall and need this safety feature in operation for this trip. We obtained a pre-work order and was told it means nothing since no work has been ordered. Service tech did not know if headrest was faulty or not. He said a speed bump can dislodge it or even a pot hole. Really?? please help us.
While I was backing out of my driveway the drivers headrest exploded into my neck for no reason. Three days later I was in the passenger seat while my husband was driving on the highway and the passenger headrest exploded into my neck on the passenger side. Both headrests exploded due to the plastic bracket holding the pin breaking when no accident had taken place.
My passenger active headrest system employed while we were parked waiting for the ferry to arrive. My daughters boyfriend was unhurt but was jolted up by the defective headrest in my 2014 Chrysler town and country.
Headrest unexpectedly popped into a protruding position as opposed to a compact position. The front of the headrest separated from the portion mounted. The inside of the headrest mechanism is visible and a connection is broken. The headrest can be compressed back into the original compact position but will not hold as the bar that keeps the front of the headrest attached to the mounted portion is broken. It no longer "latches" into the correct position. The van was stationary. The van was running but not in motion.
Both driver side and passenger side headrests have spontaneously deployed within a 6 month period. This is due to a flawed design by Chrysler engineering (used plastic clips to constrain strong spring loaded actuators in the headrest). The driver side deployed while I was driving, hitting me in the back of the head and distracting me in traffic!.
