Sporadically, my rear hatch will fail to open. It tries to release, but something catches, and it closes. Other times it functions properly. This happens whether I use the remote button on the key or the button in the van. This has happened many times, and when it does, I just have to open the hatch manually. It will always close with the key or button.

Passenger side liftgate gas charged support shock mounting bolt failed where shock mounts to the body and the liftgate crashed down on a persons head. This dangerous safety problem that could have seriously injured a small child appears to be related to bolt stress/fatigue since there was no obvious evidence of any corrosion around this mounting bolt.

Power lift gate does not work, failed approximately two years ago.
The contact owns a 2004 Chrysler town and country. The vehicle's doors, including the rear hatch, are automatically closing. The side doors closed without warning and the contact is unable to stop them when someone is entering the vehicle. On five attempts, the dealer unsuccessfully diagnosed the failure. One month ago, after engaging the keyless release to open the rear hatch, it hesitated, lowered, and reopened to full capacity. On another occasion, the rear hatch would not close. The dealer notified a technician who advised the contact to close the door manually. After several attempts, the passenger had to remove the arm to close the hatch. During a scheduled appointment to replace the tires and repair the hatch, the dealer replaced the arm without repairing it and stated that it was operating normally. On may 14, 2007, the hatch was stuck in the up position and after turning the vehicle on and off, it closed. On may 15, 2007, after engaging the button to open the hatch, it fully extended and closed on its own without warning. The hatch hit her child in the head causing a minor injury. The dealer and the manufacturer stated that they do not issue recalls and advised her to call NHTSA. The contact will schedule another appointment with the dealer to make the necessary repairs. The engine size was unknown. The current mileage is 54,669 and failure mileage was 52,000.
: the contact stated the rear lift gate opened on its own intermittently. The dealership adjusted the latch, cleaned the sensors, and lubricated the cables, but the problem persisted. Updated 12/28/06.
My 2 year old son pushed the button to close the hatch on our 2006 town and country Mini-van and my husband was packing the car and was under the hatch and he thought is was going to bounce back up like it has in the past and it did not. The back hatch kept closing down on him he thought it was going to pin him in so he put his arm over his head to try and stop the hatch from pushing down on him and only when he pushed up so hard that is snapped the arm off the back hatch did it stop and bounce back up. Also my husbands wrist and arm were swollen from the hatch pushing down on him. That could have been by two year son under there and it could of killed a small child or person. My husband stated he barely was able to push the hatch up.
Rear hatch would lock - but not be secured. Several times, during acceleration, rear hatch would open - exposing occupants to outside - as well as forcing driver to stop vehicle in high speed areas (especially freeway on-ramps). Two previous notifications to the dealership were of no help. Finally fixed end December 2004. Driver's power window failed completely. Two trips to dealership (for what was intermittent at time) gave me a silicone grease that I am still wiping off the window every time that I use. Finally fixed December 2004. Also, experiencing the much mentioned noises from the front end. The power steering noise (dealer says normal) and a crunching / clicking sound that sounds like a bad cv joint or at least a broken suspension piece. Unresolved as of picking up from dealer today. Chrysler service is not very impressive. I have never dealt with a car company that could explain away so many abnormalities as being normal.

On 2 separate occasions hatchback popped open by itself. The second time this failure occurred hatch back hit a brick wall in a parking lot. The rear windshield and windshield wipers broke. The dealership was contacted, but didn't provide any assistance.
The rear tail gate popped wide open on freeway and the dog jumped out. The dealer mechanican found that the rear latch was latched without the gate closed and there was no warning light on the dash. Cause: incomplete latch release. Pawl switch failure.
