Vehicle was in park and the power liftgate malfunctioned, slammed shut and locked on pointer finger crushing my digital nerve. The liftgate malfunctioned two years previous to this incident and was repaired by the dealer. When I inquired about it being replaced when this happened, I was told the warranty ran out. There is a major safety issue with this part of the vehicle. Im very lucky the only thing that was injured was my finger. This could easily kill someone.

The automatic liftgate opened normally and moments later fell suddenly as the operator was placing items in the vehicle. The liftgate struck the operator on the head causing injury not requiring treatment. The liftgate was closed and latch engaged before the vehicle was in motion. Without warning the liftgate motor engaged while the vehicle was driving at a high rate of speed and the operator suffered property loss. The operator pulled off the highway and attempted to secure the liftgate but was unable to get the latch to engage. The operator continued to destination cautious with the liftgate opened. Once the vehicle was stopped, the operator was able to close the liftgate and engage the latch. The liftgate was secure when the operator proceeded to enter the building. Some time later, the operator was notified by a CO-worker that the vehicle liftgate was opened. The recently replaced struts are not supporting the liftgate and it falls suddenly on the operator. The welding on the left strut that holds open the liftgate failed. When the liftgate is opened, it momentarily stayed in the upright position before smashing down hard. The safety feature usually in place where anything in the way causes it to go back up failed as well. First noticed as my 11 year old son was loading things into the back and I heard him scream asking why I closed the trunk on him??? I had to lift it off of him and use a ladder to hold it open. A body shop replaced the struts and welded the new one in place since the welding component that failed was inside the liftgate, so a $2,000+ repair. Welding was accomplished for $500.

Strut retaining bolts on the rear hatch on a 1997 Chrysler t&c failed (sheared) when opening and closing the hatch. One strut bolt (passenger side) failed in 2002, the other strut bolt (driver's side) failed 6/27/04. The 2002 failure occurred while opening the rear hatch. The resulting failure cause the hatch to drop on the head of child resulting in a bump which didi not require medical attention. The 2004 failure occurred when shutting the hatch locking the hatch in a near closed position as the strut lodged itself behind the closing bumper (bolt with rubber cap). First strut was replaced with dealer replacement part by owner. The 2nd strut has not been replaced yet. Close observation of the 2nd strut with failed retaining bolt showed a streak of rust across the shear plane. Looks like there was porosity or material anomaly that resulted in premature failure of retaining bolt. Did not notice if this was the case on first strut assembly. Both old struts are available.
The right side rear liftgate strut broke where it was connected to the body of the vehicle. This occurred upon closing the liftgate, resulting in liftgate not being supported when in the open position.
