36 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 12/18/2008

I started experiencing a loud whining sound coming out of the engine compartment area on an extended trip. I took the vehicle to the dealership while under warranty and they told me they could not replicate problem and suggested changing and flushing and complete service on transmission. While the whining sound subsided somewhat the sound still remained. Now I come to find out the power steering pump is leaking fluid all over the exhaust with a terrible and nauseating odor coming into the cabin area. Not only is this a potential fire hazard but also can be damaging to the respiratory system. The failure of this system is premature at best and extremely hazardous at its worst.

37 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 11/15/2008

Our 2005 Chrysler t&c began making a strange noise when turning. We then began to notice power steering fluid under the van. We took the vehicle back to dealer 3 times to have the problem fixed while under warranty. The problem stopped for a few months, but the problem begins again each year when the weather gets cold. It's that time of the year again and the van is no longer under warranty. It's making that awful sound again and leaking like crazy. I looked on line to see how to replace the hose the dealer supposedly replaced each time we took it in and I was surprised at the sheer number of people who were having the same problem with their vans. I really began to be concerned when I read that there were van engines that actually caught fire from the power steering fluid leak. This seems to be a serious problem with this vehicle that needs to be addressed before something more disastrous occurs.

39 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 10/06/2008

I purchased the 2003 town/Chrysler van about 3 months. Ago as soon as I got it it started to make noises, I took the vehicle back to the dealer ,they stated it need power steering fluid in which they did put in the van . A couple of days later the van started making noises again. I later got a letter in the mail stating that there was a recall concerning the power steering pump, I also found out there is a recall on the rear back door in which they the Chrysler dealer states they will fix for free. The biggest problem they want fix for free is the steering rack which is leaking. I don't feel that this is my fault and the finance people are hounding me to pay $529. 00 a month on a vehicle that is soon to be out of remission. Is there someone that can help me get out of this deal.

2005 Chrysler town and country , turn on the van there is an immediate whine. While turning corners and going at slower speeds vehicle will whine and grind. Has continually gotten louder over the last 3 months. Replaced power steering pump after consulting repairman and did not fix problem. 42 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 06/02/2008

Week of 5/27/13 power steering groaning. I'm getting ready for the rack to go again. Fluid not low yet. First time rack leaked all fluid out was in 08, van still under warranty so it was replaced. A couple of years later it leaked all fluid out and rack replaced at my expense (around $800 here). Now I'm prepping for a 3rd go around. This is crazy I have other autos that are 20 years old that I finally replaced the ps pump on one of them (and not a 800 dollar rack).

43 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 04/01/2008

Rack & pinion steering assembly failure. Seals in the assembly have failed and power steering fluid has leaked out. Was told by repair shop that it all the fluid drains out the steering system could freeze up causing an accident. The problem was only discovered during a state inspection, so was lucky that it was caught, before it was completely empty. I was told the whole assembly would need to be replaced. I have read that this is a major problem with this vehicle and has happened to thousands of these vehicles.

44 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 03/12/2008

The van was purchased used in 2007 with approximately 4,000 miles from flemington Chrysler in NJ. At approximately 10,000 miles, the rack was found to be leaking and it was replaced under warranty. Soon after, the steering seemed a little tight but we chalked it up to the new components. Fast forward to 2012, the van now has 80,000 miles and the steering has begun to whine, groan and shudder. I have flushed the fluid and now replaced the pump. The whine and shudder are still there so it looks like the rack has failed again. The van can easily become a safety problem and Chrysler should be ashamed. Definitely the last Chrysler product I buy which is too bad because they've put out some really unique, good looking cars lately. My family's safety is more important thanks.

45 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2006 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 02/08/2008

My 2006 Chrysler town and country had a terrible whining noise upon starting it. When you would turn corners, it whined even louder. It constantly leaked power steering fluid so bad that it was all over the exhaust. I took my van to the dealership where it was purchased to find out that the whole steering rack needed to be replaced. They then advised me to take my van home and drive it to florida while waiting up to 6 months for a replacement steering rack from Chrysler. I refused to do this. This is a serious hazard. Power steering fluid was leaking all over the exhaust of the van, and they wanted me to take it on a 12 hour drive to florida! I told my dealer I would not leave the dealership with this vehicle, nor would I put my 3 small children (all under age 3) in this fire trap. They gave me a loaner. This is a serious safety concern, and I would hope that the NHTSA would be willing to help consumers out. The dealership even said there is a major problem. There were over 13000 of these "steering racks" on back order with Chrysler. What is going to happen when powering steering fluid gets all over the exhaust, catches the vehicle on fire, and an entire family dies in a burning vehicle. Is this what it will take to get Chrysler to do something. I would hope not, but it looks that way, luckily my dealer gave me a loaner vehicle, and within about 5 days, I had the power steering rack replaced. This is absolutely a safety hazard. Power sterring fluid is highly flammable. It is time to do something about this. Chrysler obviously does not care! thank you for your response and hopefully, quick action that is needed. Crystal.

46 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 06/02/2006

I bought a 2003 Town & Country in may '06. In June of '06 I would here a whining noise when I turned the steering wheel. It seems to be a lot worse when it is cold outside. I took the vehicle to the dealership and they advised me that my steering column was bad and the steering pump needed to be replaced. They said that is was going to be over $1100. 00. I did not even have the van for a month yet and they were not even willing to fix it. So we are dealing with the problem but the more we drive it the noise continues to get worse. We have not had any help from the dealership and I have a feeling that they knew that part was bad when they sold us that vehicle because having it for less than month I'm sure that I didn't put much wear and tear on it.

47 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2005 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

Currently this vehicle has approx. 18,000 miles. Has been to the dealer 4 times with a 5th visit coming soon. Chrysler should give away complementary cots and pillows to new car customers so that they can sleep at the service departments at dealerships, especially the union shops that don't work on saturdays (and seem not to care about the vehicle in the first place). 1. Broken forward engine mount, 2. Loose sway bar/sway bar mounts replaced, 3. High pitched grinding noise on cold startup (maybe the starter but since it never does it at the dealership I'll never know for sure), 4. Cruise control does what it wants to (set it to 55 mph, it can actually go down to 51 or up to 59 depending on the terrain, dealer says it's normal), 5. Power steering (red) fluid is leaking, now there's a surprise! and finally 6. The driver's side window makes creaking noises when it's going up, I know it's not a safety issue but it is annoying. I should have forked over the extra cash for a sienna or odyssey minivan, you get what you pay for. This is my first and last Chrysler.

48 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 12/09/2004

: the contact stated while starting the vehicle and turning the steering wheel a loud noise was observed. There were no warning lights illuminated. After driving at no particular speed the noise was intermittently present and the steering wheel became hard to operate. The vehicle was taken to the dealership several times, however the problem could not be duplicated. When the warranty terminated the dealership determined the steering rack had to be replaced at the contact expenses. A recall letter # 04v386000 was received and the dealership performed the required replacement of the hoses, piping and fittings indicated in the letter. After a year the defect intermittently recurred with the same symptoms as before but this time the air bag warning light illuminated consistently. The dealership determined that the steering rack had to be replaced again but later advised to replace the entire steering system. The manufacturer was contacted who open a case, however a call back has not been received. The contact was very concern for the safety risk entailed in the vehicle's operation.

49 Power Steering Fluid problem of the 2003 Chrysler Town & Country

Failure Date: 11/03/2003

This vehicle was purchased new by me on 03/29/03. After 6 months the power steering pump became noisy and the steering would shudder. I brought the vehicle to the dealer on 11/03/03 @ 10,450 miles. Dealer replaced power steering return hose under warranty. The steering is still noisy and still shudders. On 02/02/04 @ 13,083 miles, vehicle brought to dealer due to power steering fluid leak and shuddering. Leak fixed, power steering still noisy and shudders. On 03/25/04 @ 15,622 miles brought to dealer because power steering is noisy and still shudders. Told by dealer that they couldn't find anything wrong. On 03/29/05 @ 30,408 miles brought to dealer because power steering still noisy and shudders. Dealer performed recall d-37, replaced power steering return hose. This did not correct the problem. This problem still continues to this day. I have all the records pertaining to this problem.

Dealer installed power steering line and power steering cooler. Since then, fluid has leaked twice again. Dealer has replaced another hose, and spring clamps. Then heard "whirring' noise.
