I observed the steering controls were not working for the radio or any other controls associated with the buttons on the steering wheel while driving to work. I could not change the menu for the speedometer and other functions when parked. I also could not use the horn at all which I consider a safety feature. After doing some research I found that this exact same problem was recalled for the grand caravan for earlier models but not for this vehicle. I made an appointment with Chrysler for the repair but the soonest they could take me was in approximately a month, August 14. Since I travel to and from work at night alone and with three young children, I had the repair done immediately at a local reputable repair shop. The part replaced was the steering wheel module and the part alone was $469 plus labor. The total cost was over $750 for which I have the repair bill. This is a faulty design to a part that is closed up in the steering wheel and has failed for no apparent reason in the same model car from Dodge/Chrysler and from what I have read, Jeep brand as well. Not acceptable.

The contact owns a 2010 Chrysler town and country. While driving approximately 25 mph, the steering and brakes failed. The vehicle restarted after one attempt. The vehicle was taken to the dealer (ken nelson located on 1100 n galena Ave, dixon, IL 61021), but the failure could not be duplicated. The dealer confirmed that the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v373000 (electrical system, air bags). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure, but did not offer any assistance. The failure mileage and VIN were unknown.

3 occasions driving my 3 children to school my town and country became unresponsive. The steering failed, breaks and the car went unresponsive. The electric stability control warning light came on. To remedy, I had to put car in park, and restart vehicle. The last instance when this occurred I rolled into a four way stop as my breaks did not work. An online search has shown many other have experienced this issue with the Dodge caravan and Town & Country both made by Chrysler. Took van to dealer who said diagnostic test showed nothing (other people report this same experience). They updated the pcm software. I find it hard to believe a software update would render my car safe to drive and be the factor that caused it's whole system, brakes included to shut down. This issue needs to be looked at. Mini van drivers carry children!.

I bought this 2002 Mini-van in January from my sister. She took meticulous care of it. So when I found my steering failing, I never thought it was an issue with the steering. I thought it was the power steering. I blew a power steering hose one day after weeks of smelling something burning. Got that fixed and then found the steering column was still locking up, not letting me turn the car, running over the curb because I could not steer it. And I can still smell something out of the ordinary, it almost smells like anti-freeze. Not sure what it is. It usually happened when I first started the car and did not let it warm up for a long period of time. Now it will do it when I am driving. It has happened at least 10 times in the last month. I am getting annoyed with this. I have had it to the garage 2 times now and they can not replicate what happens and now I feel like they think I am a nut case because they say, there is nothing wrong. We can not find a problem with it. I carry 5-6 children in my car at any given time and I find this to be very dangerous.

The contact owns a 2006 Chrysler town and country. The contact stated that his 30 pound infant pulled on the automatic transmission lever while no key was in the ignition. The vehicle began moving and crashed into a stop sign. The dealer stated that a pin in the steering column failed and needed to be replaced at the cost of over $1,595. The technician further stated that it normally takes excessive force to break that pin, which is impossible for a 30 pound infant. The steering column did not lock properly to prevent the gears from shifting. The vehicle has not been repaired. He is in the process of notifying the manufacturer. The VIN was unknown. The failure and current mileages were 46,000.
In March of 2006 we noticed that our Town & Country Mini van was steering sloppy, lose and had loud noises coming from the area of the steering rack. After having the car inspect, it was determined that the steer rack had failed with only 53000 miles on it. We contacted Chrysler and was told that it is out of warranty and would not be covered. We had the steering rack replaced and this year in March , the second rack failed, which we also had replaced. In July of this year the third steering rack failed, and I was told by the service manager at the dealership that they have had "problems" with these steering racks.
Steering failed on my previous Chrysler new yorker at the same mileage. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12-12-02 cut over to artemis***763027.

The steering failed to steer the vehicle in one direction. The consumer told by the maintenance inspector that the steering coupler and rack were not properly installed at the factory. This improper installation caused damaged to the rack and coupler.
