During an inspection of our van it was noted that the drivers side strut tower is rusting through. After looking into this issue on line I noticed many cases with exactly the same problem. 43 Body problem of the 2008 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 12/02/2010

Originally had taken car in for recall. The recall was for both doors. The dealer had delivered the car and told me I would be contacted for repair on the passenger door once the parts were in stock. After months of waiting I finally contacted them and was told that the parts were in stock. I made the appointment and when I was set to drop off the van I was told that I was going to be charged because it has been put in as complete in the dealers records but showed parts not installed. I was told to contact Dodge and left the van there overnight. The next day I spent a lot of time on the phone to get the runaround with Dodge. I picked up the car and didn't have the repair done. My family has used the van ever since. I have always put off repairing it because it was a recall that broke down as described in the recall verbatim and is a hazard for multiple reasons and I would blame Dodge directly if anything were to happen. I have contacted them several times through out the last few years trying to rectify this egregious situation. I was told that the records indicate only one side was repaired however the recall still to this day shows complete. I take pride in buying and maintaining an american made product and would have fixed this several times over had it not been for principle. Dodge does not seem to be concerned for a customer who is a family man. I protect my family with my own life. It is difficult to only use one door when parking on a busy street with 2-5 children who are forced to get out onto a busy street if that is the only option. It can be very risky. Even picking them up from school they are made to walk to the drivers side of the car even thou the pick up side is on the passenger. Secondly my main issue is a short while driving. Protruding wires could be pinched if the door is used which could lead to a fire or fault in the door functionality.

44 Body problem of the 2005 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 11/18/2010

The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated all of the automatic door locks failed to open. The iod fuse that controls the door locks would shut on and off if removed and reinstalled in the fuse box. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing nor was the manufacturer notified. The failure mileage was 160,000.

45 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

46 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

2000 Dodge Caravan. Driver side strut cap rusted through. This is not a normal rust pattern. Still have a 95 Caravan and strut caps are perfect. The rust is such that a good bump could poke the strut through the cap and through the windshield also causing loss of steering control. This is a dangerous safety issue that has not been recalled. Again, this is not a normal rust pattern and Dodge is aware of the problem having created replacement caps which are not installed under warranty. Dodge however refuses responsibility for a manufacturer defect and steers customers to body shops.

47 Body problem of the 1999 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/28/2010

1999 Dodge Caravan, shock tower rust, this is not just cosmetic rust, this is serious structural problem where the suspension can fail by breaking up through the shock tower and collapse the from end of the vehicle. This is a defect by Chrysler and they should pay for the repair. I have two Dodge Caravans and both have the same shock tower rust problems. Even the Dodge dealers keep many repair kits in stock because of the large demand. As the Dodge carvans get older, there will be an increased number of failures and possible safety issues. The vehicles are only 10 years old, and have this type of problem is just wrong.

48 Body problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/16/2010

My 1998 Dodge van was in to my local dealer for some general service. I asked the mechanic about the considerable rust around the top of the driver side strut. He said that it had been a problem with some vans and that a service bulletin had been issued regarding. If the strut were to go break through the rusted cap it could cause an accident if not least major damage at highway speed. He printed me a copy of the Chrysler service bulletin no. 23-044-02. A web search should considerable results on the bulletin number. I called Chrysler customer service and spoke with rep# hm494. I first told the bulletin didn't exist, then when I demanded she search under the bulletin number she told me it didn't apply to my vehicle. The bulletins clearly states 1996-2000 ns town&country/voyger/caravan. Hm494 then stated that service bulletins were only for technicians and mechanics. I explained that this was the problem. The important information directly related to driver & passenger safety that was issued in 2002 apparently was not intended to be given to the customer. Personally I do not think hm494 was qualified to make the statements that represent chryslers customer service. I was also told because my Caravan has 126,000 miles I should not expect anything from Chrysler. My Caravan would have only been 4years old at the time of the service bulletin.

The contact owns a 2007 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated that she activated the sliding doors and as the contact entered the vehicle, the sliding doors closed and crushed the contact between the door and the frame. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection where they informed that the failure was not able to be determined. The failure recurred several times later. The contact also stated that while driving 60 mph, the door opened independently. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified and wanted the contact to take the vehicle to an authorized dealer to be inspected. The failure mileage was 65,000.

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Caravan. The contact stated that the body of the vehicle was separating from the strut mounts. He feels that the strut mounts will detach soon and cause the vehicle to crash. The current and failure mileages were 155,000. Updated 06/08/09 updated 06/09/09.

52 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 05/05/2009

This references TSB number:2304402 and NHTSA number:10000317 (TSB date: October 14, 2002). Failing component: structure: body. Cosmetic corrosion or perforation at upper driver's side strut tower usually between the strut and upper load path beam inner panel (inner fender).

53 Body problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

I took my vehicle in for an inspection and the mechanic informed me that the upper strut towers on my 19998 Dodge Caravan are rusting through causing possible steering and brake failure. I was told if the problem is not corrected and the tower collapses while drive I will loose total control of steering and possible brakes.

54 Body problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

1998 Dodge Caravan front strut tower failure. The tower is collapsing on both sides of van.

55 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 12/05/2008

I bought the van used and nothing was noted about the strut tower on inspection however a friend of mine noted it within 6 months of me buying the car. As he was a licensed mechanic I took him seriously. The driver's side strut tower was rusting on the top where the bolts that hold it to the body exist. I continued to get worse and after witnessing a Dodge Caravan similar to mine literally fall apart while attempting to park I realized that I should get it fixed. I found junk yard to get them to cut out a strut tower off a junked Caravan and then found a good welder to replace the top of the strut tower which was the only part of the tower that was rusting. The top the tower was paper thin and when he showed me the piece he removed I noted that I could push my finger through the metal that was left. If this had broken through while I was driving I believe a serious, injurious accident would've occurred as the front of my vehicle would've dropped to the ground and like the car I saw in the parking lot, my axle would've broken and I would've lost control of the vehicle. . Deadly at 60 mph.

56 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 09/08/2008

9/8/2008 I was traveling on ir80 & I must of swerved a bit & the van struck a dot paddle marker @ humboldt mile marker 45 in nevada. The van became engulfed in flames & overturned sideways at least 4 times. My mother & father parrished as a result of this accident, burned so much they couldn't recognize their gender. My wife & I escaped with her getting severely burned about 76% & I about 68%, we was transported to humboltd hospital then air transported to u of u burn center salt lake city utah where she spent about 7 months in ccu burn unit & I about 3 months. The marker post was uprooted & struck the undercarriage of the van & detached the fuel line then punctured the cross member & depositing the fuel line in the hole the fire started then we overturned with a series of explosions. A mechanic explained the severed fuel line was a return line from the evap. Canister to the fuel tank & that the fuel system stayed at 49 psi being fed by an electric fuel pump I remember driving speaking with my father, my wife & mom was sleeping in the back seat then I woke up on fire trying to escape the wreakage, I hollered @ my wife & I rolled out of the van. My wife checked mom she was dead then another explosion blew my wife to the front seat between where my dad & I sat, she grabbed dad but he wouldn't come cause of mom. Two people moved my wife after my father shoved her out. I started back to the van when another explosion engulfed my father. I dropped to my knees & told a bystander I just killed my mother & father. My children & family hired a big time lawyer & it was looking good until Chrysler filed for bankruptcy & cleared them from all lawsuits prior to their bankruptcy. My lawyer had to walk away with a $30,000 loss, she was 44 & I was 48 years old prime time of our life we still battle health issues from the burns & never got a red cent from Chrysler.

57 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/23/2008

On my 2000 Dodge grand Caravan , the left front strut tower support rusted out and the strut pushed through the top of the support. This is a defect in design and should be recalled and fixed by Chrysler free of charge.

58 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/20/2008

Have noticed the driver's side shock tower on the top rusting to the point where safety is a major concern. Being that it is a possible safety issue before having any repairs done wanted to know if there is or is going to be a safety recall on this issue.

59 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 01/08/2008

I have a nearly rusted-through strut tower (driver's side) in my Dodge Caravan '00. This rust problem became initially visible in '04.

60 Body problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 12/01/2005

My 1998 Dodge Caravan (current mileage 108,000 miles) has severe corrosion around the top to the driver's side strut tower. It was first noticed by a mechanic last summer, but has since accelerated quickly and looks like a safety risk should the tower collapse into the engine compartment. I am concerned about any sudden failure. There is very mild corrosion in the same top area of the other strut tower. I was told by a Dodge dealer in st. Paul that Chrysler was covering all or portions of select tower repairs. When I contacted Chrysler today I was advised that this problem was not a subject of recall and, therefore, not covered whatsoever. I did find considerable info on this problem at an internet site called allpar. Com which was quite helpful.

61 Body problem of the 2000 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 04/17/2005

While visiting a family friend consumer discovered a water leak t in his Caravan. This leak resulted from water running down the exterior roof grooves and down to the back of the van. It had a crack in the weld that was found on both sides of the upper portion of the van body, where the rear hatch was located. The water entered the crack and ran down the inside of the van . Also, puddles were found underneath the carpet, which results in a mild wet carpet, but even worse, rust. I lifted the rear carpet in my van and there was water and the carpet pad was wet. I hadn't noticed it before because we have a plastic liner tray in the back. I believe many people have this problem but are unaware of it.

62 Body problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 04/14/2005

In April while driving down I-70 at about 70 mph the owner was driving and heard a ripping noise . Looked back and saw side panel in the air and it flew into the median. It was a piece of gray panel that was along the van at the bottom. There were cars around, but the plastic piece didn't hit anything or anyone. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer will be contacted. Owner has no idea why the panel fell off. There hasn't been any other problems with vehicle, and it was regularly serviced. The only dealer information the consumer had was the name and city and state.

63 Body problem of the 1997 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 01/01/2005

I have a 1997 Dodge Caravan se purchased new. Two years ago I noticed a spot on the roof, and another on the hood where the polycoat was beginning to peel. Within two years the car looked as if it had some kind of disease. I began to notice other Caravans of similar age, and they had the same problem. I saw other makes of cars that were much older with original paint jobs and they weren't experiencing this problem. I am really disappointed with the paint job and poly coat on the Dodge Caravan. I feel for what we payed for, and with the problems we have experienced , such as the windshield wipers coming on by themselves, the service engine light coming on and going off, the interior light coming on or not when the door was opened, the warning bell not going off when the door was open, the emergency brake working or not working, the fogging of the plastic headlights - at least the paint job should have lasted!.

66 Body problem of the 1999 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 07/01/1999

1999 Dodge Caravan. Strut towers rusted out not only the cap but the whole tire on the driver side. If this should fail it could be disastrous. I just noticed this a week or so ago.

67 Body problem of the 1996 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 03/03/1997

The back section of the glove compartment is not enclosed, causing papers from the glove box to get sucked up in the air conditioner blower, resulting in air conditioner and radio panel heating up to a point where one cannot touch the panel. Dealer is aware of problem.

68 Body problem of the 2002 Dodge Caravan

The roof line of the short wheel base Caravan minivan slopes down so low that even short adults (and tall children) can not sit in the 3rd seat without their necks being smashed forward against the roof. I am certain that this design will result in necks being broken in crash situations. It is just a matter of time. Chrysler needs to provide owners with lower seats that allow adequate head room.

69 Body problem of the 1998 Dodge Caravan

Driver's compartment area is cramped and restrictive to the driver.
