The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Caravan. After driving 75 mph, the contact noticed that the tail light lens was missing. The same failure occurred approximately one year ago, but he assumed that it was a case of vandalism. When the contact returned home, he had to replace the entire light assembly on both occasions. On the first occasion, his insurance company covered the cost of the repair. Both the dealer and manufacturer stated that there was no recall; therefore, the contact would have to cover the cost of the repair. The failure mileage was 35,000 and current mileage was 48,000.

6 Tail Light problem of the 2001 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 03/14/2006

Correction/addition to complaint 10153230. At the request of Dodge customer assistance, owner took vehicle to dealership for diagnosis of why taillight assembly disconnected from vehicle. Both Dodge customer assistance and local dealer stated repeatedly that there were no service bulletins on this issue. Customer showed dealer service manager that the other taillight assembly could be detached from body with fingertip. After follow-up with Dodge customer assistance, customer was denied replacement. Subsequently, customer performed own due diligence and found that a technical service bulletin was issued for this loose tail lamp problem in September 2001 for all 2001 and early 2002 Dodge Caravans. Same bulletin details simple actions necessary to correct by placement of j-clip to the leading edge mounting tab of the taillight assembly (Dodge technical service bulletin 08-021-01). Taillight assembly has since been re-engineered and mounting tab has been extended. Both local dealer and Dodge customer assistance acknowledged that this service bulletin existed after customer argued it's existence, but still denied replacement. Any owner of 2001 or early 2002 Dodge Caravans should immediately inspect their vehicles prior to failure during operation, possible taillight assembly detaching into traffic, damage to vehicle, and operator having to detach failed assembly at roadside at risk of interstate traffic like myself.

7 Tail Light problem of the 2002 Dodge Caravan

Failure Date: 06/15/2005

7/31/05 consumer products safety commission daimler Chrysler motors corporation to whom it may concern: I have a 2002 Dodge grand caravan se that was designed and built with a dangerous defect. The tail light lenses or covers have been glued on but the glue has failed on both tail lights and both covers have fallen off onto the freeway exposing the bright white light bulbs and dropping a large plastic lens onto the freeway. When the first one fell off my wife stopped on the freeway and picked up the lens. What a great way to get killed. The second time I was driving at night on the freeway and heard a noise but did not stop until I left the freeway. The dealer sells the entire light assembly for $ 99. 00 but the lens cover is not sold separately. Looks like a good fundraiser for the dealer but a dangerous situation for everyone on the road. The problem is the new lens has the same design and was built the same as the original one. I talked to the sales clerk at the Dodge parts counter and he said "we have sold a lot of these lately. " so this is not an isolated incidence. It is only a matter of time before people are injured because of this problem. If the daimler Chrysler motors corporation acts responsible and solves this problem quickly lives can be saved and injuries avoided. This is the first time I have noticed a lens cover for a vehicle light cover that was not attached with screws. The good thing is there is a simple solution to solve this problem. Drill two holes in the plastic lens and install two screws as I have done to the lens cover retrieved from the freeway by my wife. After discovering this problem I feel a responsibility to notify as many people as necessary to help solve this problem. Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.
