Column shifter will not go into park. Shifts into other gears, but will not engage into park. Car will roll if parking brake is not engaged, or switch into a different gear. Chrysler stated that the recall is only VIN# specific, but clearly it is effecting all 2006 Chargers.
I own a 2007 Dodge Charger rt with a hemi. The gear shifter is stuck in park. I contacted the manufacturer and was told there is a recall for this problem on police cars but that my VIN number was not part of that recall. The manufacturer offered no assistance. The mileage is 88,125. It's funny I have the same problem that was found through a defect investigation conducted on more than 20,000 police cars. The problem was corrected in those vehicles and it should be fixed. The vehicles are built the same and I understand police cars need to be programmed differently with reinforced suspension and other features to do their jobs but its the same cable on my car that dislodges that's found on an officers car. I fixed my car. The NHTSA campaign id number 08v58300 (power train:automatic transmission:lever and linkage:column shift. ).

After receiving recall 08v583000 involving police vehicles with steering column mounted shifter on 11/18/2008, vehicle repeatedly has problems engaging gears. Officers driving this vehicle place the shifter into drive and learn that it has not engaged and is instead in neutral. It often startles the officers, who are focused on making rapid shift changes in order to pursue violators or negotiate terrain. Officers find that they often need to push the steering column shifter toward the dash to properly engage the appropriate gear, causing a lapse in driving skills and a loss of focus on vehicle operation. The latest failure occured in the middle of a crowded intersection as the patrol officer was attempting to pursue a violator. Vehicle showed it was in reverse when it was between reverse and neutral. Shifting to drive, it remained between neutral and drive until the officer could correctly engage the appropriate gear.
