I had to pay for that failure. The symptoms were shimmy/shake when the brakes were applied. I had not made any panic stops and most of the driving had been on interstate or state highways.

13 Brakes Failed problem of the 2001 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 07/17/2004

I'm a little disturbed at this page. . . . "number of deaths"? does somebody have to die before consumers are protected? my complaint is for the brakes on my 2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab. I no longer expect my brakes to stop me when I need them which means to avoid an accident, I had better always be looking for a way to steer around an obstacle! on two occasions I can remember, I had to steer around a stopped vehicle because my truck would just not stop in time. I've done some research on my own and there is enough evidence on the internet that proves there is a real defect in the braking system used on Dodge Dakota trucks from 1999 to 2002 from what I've read. When you read of one person complaining about warped rotor's and having no brakes when you need them, that's one thing. But when you read countless complaints of these same things. . What has to be done? how many people have to die? obviously it's about money. . . You don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure that out. Chrysler would rather ignore problems and take a hit on a couple law suits every year after someone dies. It must be cheaper for them to operate this way because otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. Now it's your job to promote safety. . . Is it not? if it is, then you should make our highway's safer by removing dangers from them. . Such as dangerous vehicles with brakes that fail.

14 Brakes Failed problem of the 1997 Dodge Dakota

My 97 Dodge Dakota brakes failed and I had to spend over 1,000 to repair them. Cause I was told was the pistons siezed because of bad pistons that Chrysler knew about. Also clear coat on paint is peeling off like a FL. Orange.

17 Brakes Failed problem of the 1999 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/07/2002

1999 Dodge Dakota r/t pickup rear brakes are defective. They do not hold adequately. When the truck is jacked up off the ground and put in gear the rear brakes will fail to hold the wheels stopped once the engine reaches approximately 1000 rpm. They should hold the wheels up to 2600 rpm. This causes unsafe braking, excess wear and warping of the front rotors. I am aware of other r/t owners having the same problem and at least one has had their truck bought back by Dodge rather than deal with fixing the problem. My local dealer refuses to do anything.

21 Brakes Failed problem of the 2000 Dodge Dakota

Failure Date: 12/15/2000

Dealer diagnosed "wobble" while braking as warped rotors and possible warped rear drums. This after 18000 miles of "normal" driving conditions. I seriously question the capabilities of the brake system that fails after such short use under mainly highway driving. This is apparently a condition on Dakotas that is becoming more prevelent and notices. Safety issues with "underengineered" brake system should be investigated. Thank you.
