Dodge Dakota owners have reported 109 problems related to brake electric antilock (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
It happened a few times. I would hit my brakes, and they would be solid, I would not slow down,if I release them and hit them again, then thy would stop. By that time I would be half through the intersection. I called Chrysler, but they seem to care.

- the contact owns a 2002 Dodge durango. When the contact engaged the brakes and the abs took over. The brakes squeaked and did not immediately stop the vehicle unless the contact took foot off the pedal and applied the brake again. The contact removed the abs fuse and the brakes worked normally. However, the speedometer was also connected to that fuse so the speed was not registering correctly without the fuse. The contact was driving 45mp at the time of the failure.
When braking a highway speeds, the braking system has a severe shutter. I have taken it to the dealership and they could not find any issues. They did, however, turn the front rotors. The problem is in the rear brakes. I can tell when the front has a problem. It is a different feel. My 2001 Dakota had exactly the same issue and they could never find a problem with it either. The dealership says it is normal. The anti-lock brakes in the rear are what causes the problem. They know of no way to fix it. I put in the "number of failures" that there have been 481 failures, since that is how long I have had the vehicle and it occurs daily. It was extremely rare for it to happen until it had about 15,000 mi. On it and I can work the brakes and get it to stop if I don't have to stop fast. I had the worst issue this morning coming to work. I had a vehicle run a stop sign and I had to do a panic stop from 65 mph and the truck shook so bad I did not think it was going to stop. I have just gotten frustrated and lived with this problem, since I get told it is just normal anti-lock brakes. . . . . . . . . . . . Not likely!!!!! also, I noticed there is a daimler/Chrysler service bulletin on this problem. It is #0500405 dated 05/10/2006. Since my last experience with the dealership, I have just stayed away, so I have not been told about this service bulletin.

I own a 2005 Dodge Dakota bought in b. C canada. When trying to slow down on a hill my truck started shaking violently every time I applied the brakes, and it had very little braking power. I felt that if I kept applying the brakes it would fly off the road. Before I went on this trip Dodge inspected my vehicle and cleaned my brakes. They said everything was great and I was on my way. I talked to Dodge about this problem and they said they had never seen this problem before and offered no help even though I felt my life was in danger. My girlfriend will not ride in my truck anymore and I don't blame her. Please make Dodge recall this truck for it has many problems and before someone gets hurt . Thanks.
: the contact stated while applying brake pressure at 55 mph the brakes went to the floor. The vehicle has been to the dealership six times for repairs. The manufacturer was alerted.
The contact was traveling at 45 mph when a deer ran out in front of the vehicle. He pressed on the brakes and the vehicle shook and jumped. The brakes locked, causing the vehicle to go over a hill. The contact sustained injuries. The vehicle needed the frame replaced. The manufacturer has been contacted. The vehicle was still under warranty. Updated 01/23/06.
The contact states the fuse in the relay switch was missing from anti lock brakes. He contacted the dealership and the manufacturer, and they could not determine why the fuse was missing.

Traffic was moving in front of grace covenant church, there was an officer directing traffic. My husband put on the brakes at the moment he realized traffic was not moving any longer. The brakes locked up. When you look at the tire marks on the road, it is apparent the right side tire locked first (the tire mark is much longer) then the left side tire locked (tire mark on road much shorter). He was unable to stop the vehicle before it struck the vehicle in front. The airbag did not deploy in this accident. The concern is that this truck is believed to have abs which means it was malfunctioning since the tires locked up. The concern is this may have contributed to the accident in that he was not able to get the vehicle stopped in time. It was a hard impact which it appears will cause the vehicle to be totaled.

Contact complained about the brakes making noises. He took the vehicle to a dealership six or seven times for this problem. The vehicle made noises when braking at any speed. The manufacturer sent an inspector to investigate this vehicle. No problems have been found with the brakes. No repairs were made at this time. The vehicle is still under extended warranty.

Purchased my new Dodge quad-cab Dakota in Aug 2005. Immediately noticed the truck would shake when brakes were applied, especially at about 50 mph. Some new vehicles can have brake rotor and drum rust and I assumed that that may have been the problem. But after 3000 miles on vehicle, I took it to the local Dodge dealer to have them diagnose the problem. I had waited to take it to the shop so the oil could be changed at the same time. I also wanted to allow ample time to wear-in the new shoes and rotors etc. Dealer ordered new front brake rotors on Nov 8 2005 and rotors were replaced on Nov 22 2005 with truck showing about 3600 miles on odometer. Dealer informed me when I picked up the truck that the problem was not yet fixed and that rear brake parts were being ordered. The shimmy and shake when braking at around 50 mph is serious and would cause safety concerns under certain conditions such as slick or rough roads, as applying brakes causes a bouncing sensation as if you were traveling on a washboard road (series of small humps or bumps). It is upsetting to me that this new vehicle is sold with the factory being aware that this problems exists on these vehicles. It is fraudulent to sell a defective vehicle such as this and knowing the problem exists. Unsafe while braking at moderate speeds.
Within one month after purchase of our 2005 Dodge Dakota quad cab, we started to experience the vibration in the truck. We have taken the truck in over 7 times. Axles, rotors, wheel bearings, etc. , have all been replaced several times to no avail. A zone representative from dcc said "it is a characteristic of the vehicle. " bull!! if this is a characteristic, why were we not told about it when we purchased the vehicle. We too are waiting for a recall that will probably never be issued! we want results. Fix our truck and make it right. . .
I love this vehicle, however will join the masses reporting a failed upper ball joint at 55,000 miles, 3 sets of warped front brake discs and lack of proper braking for the abs system.
I have a 2005 Dodge Dakota quad cab and when I would go to stop from high speeds it would shutter really bad until I would take my foot off of the break. However in may 06 I was hit in the drivers side rear tire and had my entire rear axle replaced with a new one since the old one was damaged in the accident and no longer have the shuttering when I stop.
This is my second posting. My 2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab is still dangerous to drive because the four wheel abs system will not stop the vehicle in a panic situation. When the brakes are applied hard, the abs kicks in and releases the wheels but if I let off when that happens and reapply the brakes, there is almost no braking. The pedal seems to hit a block and the truck continues to roll almost freely. The problem is really exacerbated over rough surfaces or on wet pavement. I've learned to give myself about five times the normal safe following distance but that just results in people pulling in front of me to take advantage of the gap and thereby taking away the safety margin I need with this vehicle. There are many posts and complaints about this exact problem. Is anyone there listening? the dealers can duplicate the problem but are told by Chrysler that the system is functioning normally. Please do something. Does someone have to die in a accident before you investigate and provide some answers?.
Abs system does not work properly. Rear wheels lock up at low speeds when road is wet then release brakes causing the vehicle to accelerate. Does same if rear wheel hit a bump or pot hole during braking. Brakes release during mild stops. This condition has caused several close accidents. Took to dealer and they replaced the ignition switch. This did not resolve the problem.
With around 15,000 miles on 02 Dodge Dakota was told front rotors had to be replaced and subsequently were at 20,000 miles. Less then year later with 30,000 miles rotors must be replaced again at cost of $390. New truck twice in a year, with known problem dealer sticks head in sand and ignores.
Abs brakes continue not work properly under wet road conditions and at 40 mph, during emergency stop, wheels initially lock up and then release all together. Reoccurrance of similar event documented in odi #10049545. Avoided rear end collision by driving off road into ditch. These brakes have a serious problem and need to be investigated. Dealer continues to state that they are working as designed for a two wheel abs system.
The contact owns a 2006 Dodge Dakota. While driving 10 mph and greater, the vehicle vibrated intermittently when the brakes were applied. The vibration is more frequent at lower speeds. The dealer stated that the rotors were failing intermittently as well. The failure began immediately after the vehicle was purchased. The dealer stated that her VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign id number 06v038000 (service brakes, hydraulic:antilock:control unit/module). There were no warning indicator lights present at the time of the failure. The failure mileage was 550 and current mileage was 20,192. Updated 12/12/07.

Upon applying the brakes, the front of the vehicle dips with the rear of the vehicle lifting. As a result, the rear wheels lock up very easily, causing the abs system to kick in. When the abs system kicks in, the vehicle feels like the accelerator was pressed. I have driven many other types of trucks and never encountered a truck with such poor braking. The truck should be designed to limit the rear from lifting while braking.
2000 Dodge Dakota developed a brake problem. ** answer required***. The brake would pulsate when braking and cause severe problems with the abs which almost took the vehicle off of the road. The brakes were replaced a year prior.

When applying the anti- brakes from a low speed brakes locked. As a result, vehicle rear ended another vehicle.
Recall campaign 04v596000 concerning upper ball joints. Consumer brought vehicle to dealer for brake work and discovered the upper ball joints were defective. This vehicle is not included in the upp ball joint recall due to VIN.

2001 Dodge Dakota quad cab - faulty front and rear brake design I am a mechanical engineer by training. The front rotors and rear disc brakes are of poor design and function. They overheat, warp and begin to pulse. This occurs as a result of small brakes coupled with the large diameter tires and heavy weight of the vehicle. I have had to replace all brakes twice within 3 years (60,000 miles) as a result. These breaks do not brake well and are extremely soft. I have had numerous close calls as a result of these brakes. I would also like to point out that when coupled with this abs system most vehicles continue to "lock-up" and slide creating a potential for serious accidents.
While driving at 50 mph on a raining day consumer applied the brakes and vehicle slid and hit another vehicle, rear ending it. Upon impact, air bags failed to deploy. Driver sustained chest injuries.
During inspection the lower ball joints were found to be defective. The brakes pulsated and the vehicle was hard to stop.
While driving at 55 mph consumer depressed the brakes and the front wheels locked up. Vehicle was towed to the dealer, who claimed that the power brake booster needed to be replaced. Another certified mechanic determined that the abs system was defective. Recently the exact same problem occurred, and the dealer was still denying that there was a problem.
Brake problems which I believe are related to abs system on 2002 Dodge Dakota quad cab with factory installed towing package. I am running the third set of disc brake rotors on the front and second set of drums on the rear with just over 97,000 original miles on this truck. I bought the vehicle new and there have been no accidents or damage to this vehicle.
The rotors and brakes needed to be replaced when the vehicle was taken for checkup. This defect made it difficult for the vehicle to stop.
I have been having brake problems with my Dodge Dakota 4x4 club cab truck since the first 6,000 miles. Warped rotors have been replaced at least 5 times and I have also complained about poor stopping power of back brakes. Dodge dealership "checked" them and found nothing wrong. Also having lots of problems with noises from front suspension and am suspecting ball joint problems now because of all the news coming out regarding this problem recently on cbs news.
For a vehicle supposedly with an abs brake system, this Dakota's wheels lock up at the slightest presence of water. This caused me to slide into the rear of another vehicle during a rainstorm at something less than 20 mph. I sustained $5,000 damage to my truck, and the airbags did not deploy. This is the only accident I have ever had in over 40 yrs of driving. Testing stopping distances on wet pavement are at best, scary. This thing locks wheels too easily in my opinion, causing uncontrollable skids that I have never experienced in my 1990 Dodge caravan, or any other car I have ever owned.
Vehicle does not brake adequately during "panic" stopping. Rear wheel abs does not appear to be working properly. Have had three occurrences when I needed to "panic" stop and in all cases had to swerve to avoid collision because brakes were not stopping vehicle. Rear wheel abs engages but allows too much "free-wheeling" which allows vehicle too much travel. Regular braking (even "hard" braking without abs involvement) seems to work correctly. Have had vehicle to dealer twice and first time rear drums were turned and second time abs module was replaced, but has not fixed problem. Service advisor and mechanic say that the abs system is working as designed for a rear wheel only abs. I have not had any resolution to problem but now dealer won't look at it because they say they have done everything they can.
While traveling on wet road came upon high water and a vehicle spun out half on the shoulder, half in my lane. Applied the brakes which locked up. Slid into spun vehicle hitting head on at 40-45mph. Neither driver or passenger airbags deployed. Front end was heavily damaged.
I was driving down the road when a truck ran his stop sign and stopped in the intersection (it is not a 4 stop). It was lightly raining. When I applied my brakes the abs didn't work and I then lost control slamming into the ditch embankment. Missing the truck. I was going about 35-40 mph when I hit. I hit head on into the embankment. When I hit my air bag didn't deploy and the steering column broke.
Regardless of how fast the vehicle is traveling, the abs brake system does not stop the vehicle in a reasonable distance in an emergency. The vehicle has been to the dealer four times for the same problem. The manufacturer has been notified of the problem.
While driving home from work I needed to slow down to make a turn. I pressed the brake and it went completely to the floor. Luckily I do not have an automatic because I had to power shift down and I barely made the turn not to mention almost hitting a telephone pole. I was just about home so I proceeded driving slowly because I knew I had no brakes ,and I then I saw smoke coming out of the hood. I quickly then got to the house and sprayed it down with the hose. I am in the process of figuring out what happened and the last that I heard was the main switch went out, which should have never happened. I am just thankful that nobody got hurt. (luckily it did not happen where there were people).
