37 problems related to engine and engine cooling have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I drove to town, stopped and turned off my engine for an 30 minute wait with construction. It started and I drove to visit my son. I turn off the engine, stayed a bit to visit, went to go home and it wouldn't start. Finally got it to start and drove it home and parked it. Drove to town a couple of days later and it died while driving, barely made it to town. Looked for information on the net only to find this is a very common problem and a major safety issue. This vehicle dies while driving and control of the vehicle at highway speeds is highly dangerous. Why hasn't Chrysler issued a recall? are they waiting for someone (or an entire family) to die? is that really what it takes, a loss of life before anything will be done? I've read that it could be the pcm, the pcm wiring harness, or a computer chip/sensor/relay something or other under the air cleaner. No real, permanent, fix at this point, a lot of people are struggling to determine the cause and a fix for this problem. Why isn't Chrysler helping? Chrysler doesn't back their product? no wonder american people opt for imports, they are reliable and built to last. How about doing the right thing Chrysler and step up!.
Electrical problem just shuts the whole electrical system down "while I'm driving", at any speed. . . Doesn't matter the temperature, it happens on any day, and at random. Major safety issue, brakes and steering become unusable. Just missed rear ending a vehicle the other day which got me to have to write this. I have to remove electrical terminal from post for 30 seconds, put back on terminal post, then hopefully it starts. I cant even drive my family anymore due to safety hazard. It has happened at least thirty times now. Local Dodge dealer says they have no idea whats the matter, yet hundreds of owners online postings prove what I am saying. Please resolve this before someone, perhaps myself, dies. . . . .
I was driving about 25 miles per hour and everything on the system stopped. The steering stopped working, the brakes stopped working and the car turned off. It tends to happen on bumpy roads. This has happened multiple times in my 1999 Dodge Durango during the past year. I think it might be related to the ignition problem affecting other Chrysler products. The Durango was not involved in that recall, but it seems as though this is exactly what happens with my truck.
My vehicle stops without any cause while driving and will not start up. I was told it was the pcm being located in a bad location. Very dangerous to be driving or to be stranded!.
My Dodge Durango shut off with any warnig and was very scary . .
I was driving through a stop light prob around 15 mph speeding up to 30 when a van going 30 ran the red light, struck me on the side of my Durango, spun us around and we were hit head on by the van which pushed us back into a light pole. The air bags did not deploy I have a permanant dent in my head from hitting the steering wheel.
On multiple occasions, beginning two months after we bought the vehicle (used), engine would die for no reason. Loss of power steering and power brakes. Would turn over, but not restart. After waiting between 10-30 minutes, vehicle would restart. Happens at slow speeds, medium speeds and expressway speeds. Inconvenient at slow speeds, very dangerous at highway speeds. Sounds similar to other complaints regarding cpu/cpm overheating. Dodge needs to recall this before someone gets killed!.
Vehicle just stopped running. Took to mechanic, ran codes on computer, nothing found. No trouble codes. Startet\d up after a few min. Ran for a week and did it again twice in the same day. Wife wont drive it anymore. Was told it was a computer problem, but it runs good for awhile then dies without warning. Dodge should admit theres a problem and fix it.
I was driving down the highway when the vehicle powered down without notice. I lost my power steering and the powered brakes. It would randomly without any warning. Turns out it was the computer, and the mechanic said that Dodge is notorious for the computer failing. The computer is very close to the engine, and this causes the board to warp and connections to break. These cars need to be recalled, and this issue needs to be addressed, or it will get someone killed.
Tl-the contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving 20 mph, the vehicle loss power. In addition, the contact stated that the vehicle failed to start on numerous occasions. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The failure mileage 165,000. Ad.
Vehicle dies at stop light. I push it to the side of the road to investigate. Vehicle engine cranks but doesn't fire. On odometer display it says no bus. Fuel pump not coming on when ignition is turned on . I walk to parts store and buy fuel pump relay ,or circuit breaker. Put it in , fuel pump comes on engine starts . Wife is driving it two days later . Vehicle dies in busy intersection . Nice people push her off the road way. She calls me , I tell her to take circuit breaker to parts store and get new one. She replaces breaker ,she's on the road again. So now I do some reading find out circuit breakers just get hot stop working , cool down and work again. So some thing is drawing too much current. Replace the fuel pump and filter , big pain in the you know what. Vehicle dies two days later. Nice man pulls me off the road. I leave vehicle sit for an hour . Vehicle starts back up. So I just go on vehicle dies on me all the time. Fast food lines ,busy intersections, it dies every where , every temp. I don't let mommy drive it anymore. I don't trust it to carry my baby anymore. I cant sell it . I have read about people having same exact problems . They say replace fuel pump ,did it. Replace computer , did that. Several years ago dealer ship put new computer in cost me $1200. All for a problem similar to this one. Vehicle died at stop lights , but started up right away. I have replaced so many parts , every thing is new. I cant trust it . Its very unsafe . I cant knowingly sell it to some body. Thanks Dodge.
When driving at highway speeds the engine will suddenly shut off losing power steering and brakes. After sitting for 10 to 30 minutes it will restart and run for an additional distance until shutting off and repeating the same symptoms again. It will sometimes perform normally for days until once again quitting for no reason. Multiple components have been replaced without correcting the problem. Dodge denies there being any problems with the vehicle but there are many instances of the same condition being reported on internet sites from around the country.
My 1999 Dodge Durango shuts off unexpectedly.
My 1999 Dodge Durango began jolting while driving with sudden loss of power, including steering. This has happened multiple times while driving on the highway and is increasing in frequency as the weather is warmer. I was able to coast to the side of the highway, but being as there was no shoulder, I ended up in a ditch. If this were a freeway and I were in the left lane, I am not sure I would have made it to the right shoulder without an accident. The car was towed to a mechanic where it started immediately. They said it was most likely the battery. I replaced the battery and the car continued to die. I am in the medical profession and am on call for emergencies. If the car were to die while responding to an emergency call, imagine the impact on other lives. Also, if the car were to die on a freeway, the result could be fatal. The car is at a mechanic currently and they have 'no idea' what is wrong with it. I have since been avoiding freeways and taking side roads with reduced speed limits out of fear that the car will quit on a freeway. The odometer reads 'no bus' during the incidents and will start up again after it 'cools' for a few minutes. This now happens 2-3 times per week and, quite frankly, the next time it does, I may just leave the car where it dies.
I own a 99 Dodge Durango . While driving car completely shuts off !!!!!.
My 1999 Dodge Durango just stops running but usually starts back up again. My wife usually drives this car with our 3 children and presents a very dangerous problem if it stops running at the wrong time. There are many complaints on the internet about the same problem with this model. I feel that Dodge needs to investigate this problem and find a solution for its customers.
Durango just dies in middle of traffic and it will not start. Odometer says no bus and Dodge cant tell me what is wrong with it!!!!!!!.
The car cuts off while it is driving at various speeds, including highway speeds and with no warning at all. After a few minutes it will usually start back up. There were no injuries but if it was to cut off while driving and going around a corner it could easily run off the road or into oncoming traffic. I have read about lots of other drivers or this same type of vehicle having the same exact problem.
1999 Dodge Durango shuts down while driving ,you can't steer and the brakes dont work . Someone is going to die if this problem is not corrected.
Here is a copy of my complaint that I emailed directly to Dodge: I have done alot of research and have found that the dealers do not know how to fix this problem and there are numerous web sites with fellow 1999 Dodge Durango owners who are experiencing the same problem and we are looking for your recall to permanently correct the matter. Your dealers have not been able to correct the problem at any price. When the outside temperature of where ever you live gets warm, the vehicle will stop with no warning and you lose control of your vehicle. The dash says "no bus" where the mileage usually is. It is unpredictable and dangerous to drive this vehicle although I love everything else about it. I am sad to see that there are several years of consumers asking Dodge for help with this problem and yet there is no answer from you. Please explain to me what you can do about this. I do not want to be a statistic about driving a 1999 Dodge Durango and dying from it. Please do something. I can't drive the vehicle in the spring or summer but don't feel right about trying to sell it and pass it on to someone else who doesn't know any better. I am sure that you are very aware of this problem and can find several web sites with consumers asking for help and reporting similar problems just by googling 1999 Dodge Durango but here are a few links for you to visit too. . The fact that when I am driving with my 5 children and my Dodge Durango shuts off and you loose all power!.
I am the owner of a 99 Dodge Durango slt since 12/31/98. About 14 months ago it started dying on me without any apparent reason. I have had it serviced 7 times at 2 different dealerships. All with the same result, temporarily fixed. The last 2 times being the worst. Each from a different dealership. I have been driving on the freeway at 70 mph and had it die. This shuts all power steering and braking down. Luckily, I've been able to avoid being rearended or hit as I coasted to the side of the road. I stopped driving with my wife and kids in the truck, in case of being hit. The service depts have: checked connections, replaced speed sensor unit, central timer module, crankshaft module and are now telling me I need to replace the pcm. Have seen on the web that this is not an isolated incident. I love the truck, but it's inoperable by most standards.
Engine dies suddenly at random times including in traffic. Odometer shows no bus. Any speed, weather, road conditions. Dealer no help - no codes - could not replicate. Eventually became frequent enough that I traced problem to pcm with use of heat gun. See internet blogs. Seems to be frequent problem for this year.
Started with rebuilt transmission, then sludged in motor. Had to replace motor with only 120,000 miles motor and transmission 5,000. Also had to replace ball joints, tie rods and bearings cost $1,000.

The consumer checked the oil and noticed that the oil reading stick was showing I quart short. The consumer was traveling on the highway, and when the consumer reached the next city he checked the oil again and the same reading appeared, add 1 quart. The consumer took the vehicle to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic determined that the intake gasket needed to be replaced.
Ball joints. Engine under warranty 3 times.
During a routine inspection the consumer was informed that the front ball joints were loose. The dealership was notified, but did not resolve the problem. The vehicle would also die while in motion.
Intermittently check engine indicator light illuminated on dashboard. While driving at highway speeds and without any warning engine slowed down. Vehicle was taken to the dealer were they replaced engine sensor.
1999 Dodge Durango. Bought used in 2003 w/70k miles. Before it hit 80k the motor had blown and lost all power while driving down I-95. No warnings. Towed to garage and needed top end rebuilt due to lack of lubricant in the top end. Private warranty company covered half the cost claiming my lack of maintanace. Just before 100k it would lose oil pressure when warmed up and the vehicle came to a stop. Took it to garage and they replaced the oil pressure sending unit claiming it was blocked with sludge. Within 500 miles the motor blew again. Had entire motor rebuilt with new top end and bottom end, new bearings etc. Flushed and changed oil every 3k miles from then till it reached 125k miles. Once again while stop at toll booth vehicle lost oil pressure but would come back up when I applied a little throttle. Tried to pull off the road but within 100 feet the motor started banging and then lost power and shut down. Towed it back home and checked oil. Dipstick showed nothing. 2 days later when I checked the oil the level was good. Oil must have gotten trapped in the top end and caused the bottom end to be unlubricated and fail. What a poorly designed engine. Vehicle sits in my backyard with another blown motor. Thanks Chrysler.
While driving at 60 mph engine revved up but vehicle wouldn't accelerate. Consumer pulled off the road, and let vehicle sit for a few seconds while idling. Then, pulled back onto the road. Consumer drove home at 15 mph. The cause of vehicle's failure to accelerate properly has not been determined.
Ball joints are all defective and the freeze-out plug rusted causing fluid leakage.
Oil pressure guage would read normal then drop to 0 and bounced back and forth, sometimes not coming back up for awhile, had checked out and found no problems, about 4 months and only 4000 miles later I have a 57,000 mile blown engine. . .
I have had the vehicle in the garage since July 28, 2003. It will work for a couple days then something else goes wrong. I am putting it back in the garage on Friday due to more transmission problems. I have put way too much money into this vehicle. Something needs to be done!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.
While driving, the vehicle would shut off. Dealer has been notified. Ph.
