27 problems related to gasoline engine have been reported for the 1999 Dodge Durango. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Computer chip failure causes vehicle to shut down. Dealer contacted but wants to charge $1000 for an emissions covered failure. Claims anti-freeze caused failure. Separate auto mechanic says computer is in gel pack and wasn't effected by anti-freeze and connectors are not corroded.
The vehicle is 1999 Dodge Durango. The consumer needed the tires replaced and he had an independent mechanic check the ball joints at the same time. The mechanic told him that the front top and bottom ball joints were going bad, this was in 12-2004. The consumer knew there was a recall on similar vehicles. He contacted the manufacturer and they told him that his vehicle was not included in the recall. The consumer had to get the engine replaced because of a sludge problem. The engine blew up because of the oil pressure had failed on the vehicle, on 7-17-05. About 3-4 months prior the consumer had the oil and oil filter changed; and the bearings replaced. On 7-19-05 the engine was replaced. He had them check the ball joints again on 7-20-05. They told him that they would be afraid for him to drive it off the lot. Consumer feels that the manufacture should replace this at their expense.
No oil pressure, engine sludge, cleaned.
Burnt valves at 57,000.
I have a 1999 Dodge Durango with 39000 and the ball joints are bad. Also the braking system seems to be failing, it grabs unatrally hard. I have also experienced an engine oil pressure problem.
The vehicle dies when coming to a stop, this has happened twice approximately 2 weeks apart. Both times when it happened the gas gauge went to the empty position then after trying to restart after a few minutes the gauge started reading again and the vehicle started and ran fine. We took it to the dealer and all they did was let it sit there and idle to try to verify the complaint. They told us that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle.
Engine seized up while driving. Vehicle checked by dealer who advised consumer he could not determine cause. . Dealer replaced oil pressure switch the day prior.
Engine blew from supposed sludge build up that had supposedly been removed 1 year ago by jerry's Dodge. Now there saying at safford Dodge where the vehicle is currently located and has been denied the extended warrenty claim that there is really no way to remove sludge.
Started in December 2001 with engine oil pressure was told this is due to improper oil changes. When I provided documentation they still wouldn't honor the extended warrenty anyways . Had to replace the engine myself this is the same problem I'm hearing all over your web site .
This vehicle loses oil pressure, has large sludge build up no matter how many oil changes it gets. The problem started out with a lack of oil knock. Not the so called spark knock, but lifter knock. Oil gets changer in spring and fall. You can change oil every week and the manufacturer will still say it's a lack of maintenance.
Oil pressure goes to zero, than back to normal. Consumer checked oil and oil was fine. Another incident was when oil light came on and engine seized. Dealer has not been contacted. Please provide any further information.
Motor was knocking under acceleration. Technical service bulletin issued for engine knocking. Took vehicle to dealer, and they stated that motor was gone. Please provide any further information.
Followed manufacturers maint. Schedule. Oil pressure problem developed at approx 31k miles. Dealer replaced oil sending unit. Oil pressure problem returned at approx 34. 5k miles. Dealer changed oil and filter, replaced oil sending unit again, and completed TSB 180600. At approx. 35. 5k mileage, while at cruise speed (65-70 mph), rapid tapping followed by immediate loss of oil pressure and total engine power loss. Towed to dealer, but dealer closed and will have to wait until 9/10/2001 for explanation/repair.
While approaching tucson on I-10, on inside lane, at legal speed of 75 mph, total loss of engine power, power steering and dash lights. Narrowly missed getting hit by passing cars and trucks. Lucky to get to side of road for towing without accident. Failure of power control module(computer malfunction)& required replacement. Same problem when SUV 6 months old, requiring replacement. Loss of all power occurs without warning. Two failures of critical part in two years too much, very dangerous.
We were driving on the highway whe n the engine oil pressure dropped to zero and the engine starting knocking and seized. We have kept the oil changed along the recommended lines of the manufacturing.
Due to a buildup of slush engine went out at 30000 miles. Contacted dealer.
For overseas cars wthout a warranty transfer certificate from the time of export, Chrysler europe will not honour the 3yr/36mo warrany or factory callbacks. No safety defec tmentioned.

When coming down an off-ramp to a stop, the oil pressure drops to 0.
While driving approx 35-40 mph the vehicle just flat shut off, electrical, brakes and steering. We are lucky due to lite traffic conditions. I was able to come to a safe stop and put vehicle into park to re-start. This vehicle will be going to the dealership 1st thing Monday morning for a check. I am advising you because if traffic conditions were different or I was on a freeway driving this could have caused a serious accident. I don't have alot of confidence in dealerships.
In September, a noise that I had thought to be a wind noise was identified to me by a passenger as engine knocking. The truck, which had been in to the dealer numerous times already for other issues, was brought to the dealer for checking. We were advised, contrary to the manual's suggestions, to try a higher octane fuel. The noise did not go away and we brought the truck back in in early November. We were told that there was a "ftsb" coming from the manufacturer. After a number of days they called and told me nothing was coming up and to take the truck back home. I did not hear from them for some time and the knocking was getting worse so I returned the truck for repairs. Repairs were attempted twice after this with nothing correcting the problem. I just called the service department today to let them know that I was hearing the pinging again and I was told that the "TSB" they had expected 2 months ago was still supposed to come out and they want me to wait. This was their response when I told them I was tired of bringing the truck in for this repair and I felt that the truck was becoming more and more damaged as a result of the pinging.
Neither dealer nor manufacturer is taking responsibility. Expect engine damage ( valves ) to result if defect is not corrected.
Engine blew up at less than 3000 miles and was replaced. Transmission problems are ongoing. Dealer has been alerted and insist the vehicle is operating as designed. Vehicle has been to dealer on 4 occasions for repair. Now the transmission needs to be replaced.
