4 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/27/2013

Vehicle stalled at 60mph. Speed and tach went to zero. Vehicle wouldn't start. Would start after cooling down about 20 minutes. Would stall again. Same thing over and over again. Finally it stalled for good. Had it towed to Dodge dealer. Dealer said the problem was the pcm. Paid $2000 to have pcm installed with a new ignition coil. It lasted about 4 hours and 200 miles and it stalled again. Samething over again. Had it towed to another Dodge dealer paid an additional $260 had another ignition coil installed and it still doesn't run right. The dash warning lights come on intermittantly, the security system engages for no reason and continues to stall. Dodge can't seem to find the cause of the problem, can't fix the problem, or simply doesn't care. My vehicle currently won't start and is grounded. All this after almost $2500 repairs from Dodge that didn't fix the problem. I have all the repair invoices from the dealers.

10 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2010

All of a sudden one day when we had a heat wave, our 1999 Dodge Durango decided to just stall out when he was in the fast lane on the freeway and almost caused him to get rear ended and another time for an accident to almost occur. This happened with no notice at all. Then, three other times it stalled in the middle of the road after picking our kids up just trying to get home. This is so dangerous and Dodge says its a problem with the pcm. The more I read, the more it is obvious that it is a safety concern and needs to be fixed by Dodge, not all of the owners that are lucky to be alive!.

18 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2009

1999 Dodge Durango has continuously stalled in heavy traffic. Engine, electrical shut down with no notice. No codes appear. We have replaced camshaft and crankshaft sensors, replaced and rewired starter but problem continues. This is a very dangerous occurrence and we have missed near (possibly fatal) accidents. Someone needs to step in and assist owners before a fatality occurs. Thank goodness the semi truck driver who was traveling at 45+ mph saw our stalled vehicle and was able to move. Imagine the scene if it had stalled on a railroad crossing!.

19 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2009

1999 Dodge Durango constantly stalling out. My wife was stuck sideways in the middle of a busy intersection today after pulling out and the vehicle died during acceleration. Has happened a number of times and apparently is happening to a lot of the same year Durangos. Simply go to carcomplaints. Com and review the number of similar incidents. There is little to no warning. We have seen a difference in the frequency of the occurrence when it is raining or has rained. It does it more frequently when it has. It is very sporadic, so we never know when it is safe to drive or not. If there are any warning signs, we would know to use extra caution prior to driving it that day or take other forms of transportation. I certainly hope no one gets killed while this is happening and I hope it is not one of my family. Please investigate this situation!.

20 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2009

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. While driving at speeds of 30 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle for approximately 30 minutes and once restarted and in motion, the vehicle would stall again. The dealer advised having a diagnostic test performed on the vehicle to determine how to repair the failures. The vehicle was not repaired and the failure persisted. This problem occurred 9 additional times. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 131,000.

21 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2009

1999 Durango stalls randomly without warning. Recently while traveling on the highway with my wife and two kids it stalled at 60 mph on route 15 in connecticut. It was everything I could do to keep the truck on the road and get it restarted. The results could have been catastrophic. I will no longer let my family ride with me in the vehicle. I have done some searches on-line and am shocked to see hundreds of post about the same problem and no resolution or acknowledgment from Dodge. I feel there needs to be a recall and corrective action. Of course if Dodge doesn't know how to fix the problem it's very difficult to do a recall. They should therefore buy the vehicles back from the current owners.

22 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2008

My wife has a 99 Durango 5. 9l 4x4 with 175,000 miles. About three weeks ago immediately after a standard tune-up the vehicle began reading multiple misfires and a "p1391" error code. I recheck everything and use the scanner to reset all of the trouble codes on the truck. Next thing you know - everything is running fine and there weren't any error codes registering. Next day my wife drives the truck and calls me later in the day and says just suddenly stopped working while she was driving the truck down the road no steering, no brakes, nothing. She was fortunately able to coast it to the side of the road and re-start it were it fired right back up and was driving fine. Then it happens again the next day again while shes driving down the road in traffic and with no warning. So, I hookup the handheld again and this time I only read the p1391 error code. So I replace the camshaft position sensor and the crankshaft position sensor. So now I'm searching the internet forums and find out that this is a known but unacknowledged problem by Dodge. No rhyme or reason it appears to have happened across all mileage ranges and in all parts of the country and in particular with the 1998 2003 Dodge Durangos. So know were faced with the prospect that a new vehicle computer ($690. 00 dealer installed) might fix the problem but that we may (because no one seems to know for sure) have to additionally replace several other sensors that, if not replaced, may blow out the new vehicle computer. Obviously, if this a known design flaw (placement of vehicle computer pcm in engine compartment unnecessarily exposes the unit to high temperatures thereby causing the unit to fail) with potentially fatal results (sudden and complete loss of power in the middle of traffic or while rounding a corner, etc. ) then Dodge needs to issue a recall and/or by some other means replace those units that are defective as a result and redesign the placement of the unit in another area.

23 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2008

The contact owns a 1999 Dodge Durango. On eight or nine occasions, while either idling or driving between 25-35 mph, the vehicle has stalled in the middle of traffic. Sometimes, the vehicle will immediately restart and other times, it takes a half an hour before restarting. The vehicle has been to the dealer on three occasions for this failure, but they have been unable to duplicate the failure. The failure mileage was 100,000.

24 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2008

During all driving conditions during the last 6 years and while being driven on the road my 1999 Dodge Durango periodically shuts down. The engine, power steering, and power breaks fail and the vehicle exhibits a "no bus" in its odometer. After stalling this way it will restart after 10 minutes to an hour. The shutting down at freeway speeds is dangerous; however, after repeatedly taking the vehicle to different Dodge dealers they can not properly diagnose or solve this life threatening problem.

25 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2008

1999 Dodge Durango stalls out on the road/highway with a no bus warning in the odometer window no power steering no abs brakes just a dead stick to control at highway or city speeds.

26 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2008

I was driving on the expressway and my Dodge Durango began to stall. I put on my hazard lights immediately. Cars began to swerve to avoid me. I tried to pull off to the shoulder of the road but the engine cut off and then the brakes would not work until I tried to restart the car in neutral. I could not restart the car for 20 minutes. When the car did start I proceeded home. The car stalled three more times on the way home.

27 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2007

1999 Dodge Durango slt 4x4 5. 2 l. Vehicle suddenly stalls. This has happened several times and at no time of the stalls was my family safe. No indication or warning signs. Chrysler corporation cannot or will not properly troubleshoot the problem, each part they replace I am paying for and its not the issue but they do not refund my money, it time for the feds to govern auto repair dealerships. My vehicle will no longer start and is useless. I am informing as many people as I can about this safety issue that Chrysler is having and refuses to acknowledge responsibility. I have talked 8 people into purchasing other makes of vehicles and researching all possible safety issues before purchase.

31 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2006

Car stalls, idles erratically and stalls when falls below 500 rpms. A/c blows hot air when idles falls below 1000 rpms. This has been happening for months, no rhyme or reason, no codes. Sometimes so bad that car stalls as soon as you let off of the accelerator to go around a curve. When will a recall be issued? there is obviously a problem. Dodge needs to step up to the plate. Does someone have to die before its fixed? do a search on the internet. Complaint are everywhere.

32 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/23/2006

: the contact stated the vehicle stalled multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who could not duplicate the problem.

33 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/28/2006

I have e a 1999 5. 9 liter 4x4 Dodge Durango. This spring it began to just stall out intermittently. It will turn over but not crank for sometime 30 minutes but then suddenly start and run fine until it stalls again. It will stall while driving with no warning. It is July 25th and it has been in the shop all summer with no codes being found. I have had it in 4 shops now the third being the dealership and they said something no one else said and wanted a ton of money to fix and I took it for second opinion and they said the dealer was wrong. As it is I have about $1000. 00 in parts that have been changed trying to fix this and now they are saying it is the pcm. I am at my witts end because I do not have my car and it is very unsafe when I do have it because there is no warning when it stalls it just suddenly dies and you loose steering and brake power. It is very dangerous. I have searched the internet and found tons of the same troubles with other people. I think a recall is needed because Dodge must know of this issue. The dealers all want different prices to change the pcm and when you call looking for them around the country suppliers say they can not keep them in stock for the Dodges. Please help!!.

34 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/07/2005

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango with 73,000 miles. We had the transmission replaced and other major repairs done to it last year. Since then it has given us nothing but trouble. This car is our family car so we travel everywhere with the kids in the back. It has stalled and died on us often. At times on the freeway in the middle of traffic and other times in the middle of intersections. The power steering goes and so do the brakes. I have been lucky so far in avoiding accidents. The mechanics can not find out what is wrong with it so nothing is done about it. The fuel lines have been checked and replaced and so has the fuel pump and the same problem continues.

35 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2005

: the contact stated the vehicle stalls consistently, sometimes taking up to 4 hours to restart. According to a independent repair shop, the power control module has become defective and needs to be replaced. The stalling occurs 3 to 4 times a week in the summer. In the winter, it stalled twice a month.
