Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problems of the 1999 Dodge Durango - part 2

The upper and lower ball joints in the consumer's 1999 Dodge Durango wore out prematurely. The ball joint problem caused problems with; the steering, tire wear, and mis-alignment. The rear windows would stick.

While the vehicle was being inspected at state inspection station the inspector informed consumer that both upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced on the right side, and the lower ball joint on the left side also needed to be replaced. Dealer was notified.

Loose upper / lower ball joints on 1999 Dodge Durango 4x4, 86,000 miles. Chrysler has recalled the 2000 thru 2003 Durango / dakota 4x4 for replacement of the same ball joints. Spoke with Dodge/Chrysler's customer service on 2-9-05 and they advised me to take it into a Dodge on service center for there tech's to analyze. Before I could get it in on 2-10-05, they refused to provide any further consideration.

A clicking noise came from the front of the vehicle, and the steering shook at low speeds, making it uneasy to control vehicle. Manufacturer was notified by consumer.

There has not been an accident or injury as of yet. The obvious is the Dodge recall for defective ball joints. I purchased a new 1999 Durango which has only 43000 miles on it. I recently had the front brakes replaced and my mechanic informed that the ball joints were metal to metal. I own another vehicle that I drive daily. I emailed daimlerchrysler and the response was the dealer "was empowered by daimlerchrysler to determine the merits of any goodwill policy consideration for repairs beyond your manufacturer's warranty". I called the dealer and gave them all the pertinent information to that point. They informed the above information was not entirely true and they had to inspect the vehicle and then contact daimlerchrysler to determine a solution. After the inspection I was informed that not only the upper and lower ball joints were bad but also the inner tie rod ends. They offered a 50/50 split for the sum of $725. 00. I declined this offer due to the obvious. I feel that the faulty ball joints caused the tie rod ends to wear prematurely and should be categorized under the recall and covered 100%. The vehicle is in excellent condition and has far below the expected mileage. I have copies all emails and invoices available at this time. Thank you, joseph maestas.

Upon trying to get the state inspection performed on the vehicle it failed due to ball joint wear. Recall 04v596000 on ball joint wear was issued. . . . .

My tires started to wear in an unusual pattern. After hearing about the 2000-2003 recall of the Dodge Durango I had my 1999 checked and found out that all four of my ball joints are bad. The same thing that they are recalling the 2000-2003 Durangos for. It will cost approx. 650. 00 to fix. I think they need to extend the recall to 1999. Has anyone else had any failure with the Durangos other then the recall years? how do they determine that only the 2000-2003 Durangos are the only ones affected by the ball joint failure? apperently the 1999 have the failure too. Please let me know if anyone else has had trouble with their 1999 Durango. Thanks.

The consumer had to replace all four ball joints due to them being worn. The consumer was aware of Dodge's recall for ball joints. Nhtsa's recall #04v596000.

The vehicle was taken to a dealership for heating problems and failure of starting. The vehicle was towed to a dealership which could not repair the problem. While at another shop, a mechanic replaced the upper/lower ball joints. This vehicle is out of the remedy scope for year NHTSA recall 04v596000 ball joints, but still had failure. Please provide details.

After 14 months, I have had to replace the upper and lower ball joints again in my 1999 Dodge Durango 4 x 4. It has 79,000 miles on it. Dodge only warranties parts for 12 months. I started hearing a loud squeaking noise coming from my front end. I took the vehicle to the dealer, thinking it was some problem with the shocks. It turns out that both sets of ball joints should be replaced. I have the worn out ball joints.

While having a maintenance inspection conducted, the lower ball joints were found to be defective. The consumer has to have the ball joints replaced.

Dodge Durango 1999 ball joints failed, replaced upper and lower ball joints on both driver and passenger side. Consumer stated that the 99 models have the same problem as the recalled vehicles 2000-04.

We have replaced at least two complete sets of ball joints on our 1999 Dodge Durango in the last 5 years.

Failed front upper and lower ball joints at 70,000. My mechanic syas that it is unsafe to drive, as the wheels could fall off. He also states that the ball-joints should never be totally worn at only 70,000 miles. There is a rball-joint related recall for all 2000 - 2004 model year Durango's, but mine is a 1999. Dodge/Chrysler have been less than cooperative. I see many, many other 199 Durango owners with the same problem and am looking for some recourse/compensetory response from Dodge to fix the problem.

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango that at 80,000 had to have both the upper and lower ball joints replaced on both front wheels. This condition was validated by 2 independant mechanics. Both thought this condition was premature. The replacement cost near $1000. Recently Chrysler recalled Durangos for 2000-2004 for the identical condition. Is it possible that this condition exists in earlier Durangos as well.

Premature ball joint wear. Took vehicle to dealership for 60,000 mile oil change. Service represenative informed me that the ball joints were worn out. They also informed me to file this complaint because it is a common problem on this vehicle.

The upper and lower ball joints, were discovered defective while consumer was having the vehicle engine tuned. The consumer was not included in the ball joint NHTSA recall campaign 04v596000.

Heard of recall of part on later models. Tires wearing very badly. Had mechanic check out the ball joints.

While driving 30 mph vehicle jerked and vibrated uncontrollably. Driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. Mechanic determined that both frontal and rear upper and lower ball joints needed to be replaced.

I hear that you have recalled 600,000 Dodge Durangos,and I cannot find what vehicles are involved and your web site has the information buried so deeply as to be criminal. I need information on my 1999 Durango and what the effects can be. I am concerned about the front ball joints. Failure of upper and lower ball joints on my 1999 Durango. I was told if I didn't replace the uppers my tires could fall off and if I didn't replace the lowers I could loose my ability to steer.

My wife has a 1999 Durango with 48000 miles and had to have all 4 ball joints replaced in the thing since she purchased the vehicle. Now the are saying one of the ball joints are no good!!! granted the first 2 were covered under warranty but she had to pay for the other 2 out of her pocket and now looking to pay out of pocket again!!!!.

During a routine oil change and inspection, it was determined that the upper and lower ball joints on my 1999 Durango are in need of replacement. I have less than 71,000 miles on this vehicle. The recent recall of year models 2000-2003 should also include at least the 1999 and possibly 1998 models that are constructed with the same faulty ball joints. This issue must be addressed by the manufacturer as it is a serious safety concern for anyone riding in one of these vehicles.
