37 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 11/30/2009

My 2004 Dodge Durango has stalled on me 6 times now without 'any warning', it simply shuts off and I have no control over the vehicle. The first two times it happened, we dismissed as some weird 'fluke', as the two times were about a year apart, so we never thought much about it. When it happened for the third time we realized something was most definitely wrong. We were shocked to see how many people were having the same problem, when we began to research the problem on line. Right after it happened the 3rd time, we took it in to our local mechanic; who indicated that it might be part of a faulty cluster problem that had been recalled. They replaced the cluster, and I felt so much better and safer. Approximately 4 months later, it happened again! I sent an email to the service department of the dealership to tell them what I experienced, after several unanswered emails and 4 months later, I decided that I needed to go in person. Just this weekend, before I went; it happened again as I was entering the freeway. I am scared to death to drive this Durango anywhere but on the side streets now. I had a child in my car when this occurred this past weekend, and they were very scared. Each time it has occurred has been at a slow rate of speed and always making a right turn. It is extremely frightening to lose complete control of your vehicle, and it is only matter of time before someone is going to die or cause a horrible accident when this shut down occurs. Why is Chrysler/Dodge not being made to address this problem? I was shocked to see still more complaints about this problem, the most recent was June 12, 2012 however these concerns are dating back to 2005! what needs to happen before this situation can be addressed and dealt with appropriately. This is not a small problem, this is a problem with potentially life threatening consequences, and no one is doing anything about it.

41 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2008

Dodge 2004 Durango stalled while taking a right turn onto side street. Unable to finish turn or got off the road. I was panicked, found flashers to turn on, then instructed to by helpful passerby to turn key off, and restart car. This worked, hasn't happened again. I take this very serious, my young, new drivers, children are able to drive this vehicle and wouldn't know what to do if this happened to them. I want this taken care of at Dodges expense. Mary west.

42 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2008

The vehicle randomly stalls. It has done this several times since I have owned it. I have taken it to the dealer several times. They told me they couldn't replicate and diagnose the problem then one time they said they did provide a fix. The time immediately before the fix I was making a left hand turn into oncoming traffic and the car stalled. Had we been hit by the oncoming vehicle the impact would have been a t-bone into my young daughter's side of the car. The most recent time this happened was yesterday. I was driving approx. 35 miles per hour and I could feel the car as if I had let my foot off the gas when I had not. I went to make a right hand turn and the car died. I was not able to steer and came very close to hitting another car. I will note the most recent date of this incident.

43 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2008

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. While making a turn at less than 15 mph, the vehicle stalled and the steering became locked. On a separate occasion, while idling at a stop sign, the steering locked and failed completely. In addition, the oil warning indicator was illuminated on the instrument panel. The manufacturer advised him to take the vehicle to the dealer for a diagnostic. The dealer was unable to produce an error code because the check engine warning indicator was not illuminated. The dealer cleaned the carburetor in an attempt to correct the failures. The current and failure mileages were less than 51,000.

44 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/25/2008

While sitting at a red light the vehicle stalled. I put it in park and it started right up. There was no sign of running rough before the stall, it just was idling and cut out. A week later on the highway at approx. 60 mph the vehicle bucked like it wanted to stall but didn't. It did this three times in less than a minute. I accelerated and it seemed to help.

45 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2008

I have a 2004 Dodge Durango with 73,600 miles. For the last couple of months it's been acting up. The second I slow to a stop or put it in park, the rpms start jumping around. It has stalled on me several times. When I accelerate the rpms spike and it doesn't seem to want to go, but jerks like it is going to stall and then takes off. It's kind of scary. I've taken it to several shops, but they can't find why it is doing this. I took it to auto zone today and had it hooked up to their diagnostic machine. They said that it isn't coding anything to be wrong. When I googled the problem, I was amazed to see how many people are having the same problem. I'm wondering if Dodge has looked into this and why there isn't a recall ???.

46 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2008

I own a 2004 Dodge Durango. I was driving about 40 mph and it just stalled. I waited a few minutes and it started back and drove just fine. I took it to the dealership and they stated that it is a problem. They advised me to drive it and if it does it again, to bring it back. However, after doing research on the net I found that this model has the tendency to stall. I'm shocked that Dodge did not have an answer for me.

I was approaching a red light and was slowing to a stop. As I slowed down to maybe 10 miles an hour, the vehicle stalled or shut off. I had no power steering or anything. Managed to put the vehicle in park and it restarted. Never done it since, but I have recently learned of many others who have had this problem with their 2004 Dodge Durango. Thanks.

51 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/24/2007

We were traveling up an incline and reached it's peak at about 40mph. It was at this time that the vehicle stalled and lost power. No power steering and hardly any breaking power. We were able to pull the car over onto a side road. We put the car into park and it restarted immediately. Very dangerous as I was carrying my young daughter with me. This was the second time this has happened. The first time I shrugged it off but the second time was scary hence this complaint. After doing some research, I found that this is a pretty common occurrence and is under investigation by the NHTSA: ea05018.

54 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2007

My 2004 Dodge Durango which I purchased new, has stalled several times without any warning /lights coming on etc. This has happened at low speeds and I was able to restart the vehicle. I have not reported to the dealer yet as it has just started happening and I checked NHTSA website for recalls/complaints to research first. Apparently I am not the only one with this issue. Vehicle only has 37000 miles on it. This could be a safety issue!.

58 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2006

2004 Durango. V6 3. 7 l engine. After sitting over night vehicle is hard to start as if it is out of gas. Turns over for a very long time before starting. When accelerating from a stop vehicle stalls, or sputters or hesitates everytime. Makes a slight ping noise when engine eventually takes off. Took to dealership they suggested change plugs I did that. Said I used wrong kind changed to there brand. Still no difference. They cleaned throttle body and injector still no change. New dealer still no idea vehicle has been in shop 7 days now. Dodge no help what so ever. Dealership rude unhelpful and dented my hood trying to close. Afraid problem will get worse or cause an accident for my wife.

59 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2006

Finally got truck back from body shop (9 weeks) and service after a total of $13219 in damage. All caused by this stalling problem on 2004 Dodge Durango limited with a hemi. Still after the accident they are not able to tell me why this happened. The typical answer is "sorry but we cannot duplicate this problem and no codes are coming up". So to make a long story short, it has happened again !!! I have not even had the truck back for 1 month !!! got in the truck on Saturday around 10:00 am (5/20) with my wife and 2 children after a haircut. Started the truck, put it reverse and nothing. It stalled !?!?! tried twice more and the same thing happened. Finally the truck stayed started on the forth try. Started down the road doing about 30-35 mph, coming up to a traffic light and the truck stalled. Imagine that !!! stopped and put in park and started right back up. Got back to our house and called dealer. He said bring it up. Got a call today (Monday 5/22) from dealer and you will never guess the answer I got. Your right !!! " sorry but we cannot duplicate this problem and no codes are coming up". Not sure what to do at this point. We are scared of this vehicle and we are afraid to drive it. No one seems to care.

60 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2005

On three separate occasions over the past 6 months our 2004 Dodge Durango stalled while traveling at speeds up to 45 mph. We took it to the dealer each time and they can not identify the problem. This is a safety issue which is not being addressed. I talked to another dealership service department and they said it is a common problem and "they have no idea what is causing it or how to fix it". I am very concerned what will happen when my wife is driving it on an off ramp at 50 mph next time. . . She will go right off the side and probably roll it with no power steering or brake.

61 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 07/07/2005

2004 Dodge Durango ltd. 5. 7 hemi fails to start, after several attempts and stepping on the gas, the car starts, but idles very rough. Dealer (stanley motors, old saybrook CT) could not fix the problem, after having the car for seven days- they installed new valve springs. The car is still not starting easily, and is idling very rough, condition seems to be getting worse. I'm concerned there will be long term damage to the engine, and I will be left stranded with the family.

64 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2005

I bought a 2004 Dodge Durango in September of 2004. I have since driven the vehicle 35500 miles with no problems until now. The vehicle stalls prior to stopping. A vehicle was turning left in front of me and I slowed to prepare to stop. The vehicle turned left before I reached them and my vehicle stalled. The vehicles behind me were not expecting me to stop and almost rearended me. This happened 4 times. It also stalled at the top of exit 87 off I-40 near jackson. I restarted the vehicle. Upon attempting to turn left, the vehicle stalled again, this time with oncoming traffic in both directions. I was nearly hit by one of the oncoming vehicles. This is very dangerous! I also should add that I had left the dealership who "fixed" the problem 6 hours prior to these occurences. It happened once the day before and I took it to service immediately the morning in question.

65 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 04/21/2005

Stalling without warning in middle of intersection. Has stalled three times. Dealer says no codes found. Can not duplicate. Through research I have found this is a common problem with this vehicle and daimler Chrysler has not been willing or able to fix it.

66 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 02/02/2005

Our Durango had experienced numerous problems, since we purchased it new in 5/04. The engine surged, it stalled, and it felt like the brakes did not grab in the rear. It also racked up more miles on the odometer, than it actually drove. On 12/16/04 we brought it in to the dealership for a recalled battery cable. The next day the engine caught on fire while driving. It was towed to the dealership, the transmission was replaced, and we picked it back up 12-28-04. On 1-16-05 we had a second fire in the engine while driving. This time it was in the shop until 2-1-05. The dealership overhauled the transmission, but did not replace it. On 2-2-05 again while driving, our Durango's engine caught on fire, this time the fire was so big, and so fast my husband barley had time to get our kid out before it exploded, and burned to the ground. It took the fire department over an hour to get the fire out. I had sent a certified letter to daimler Chrysler, asking them to buy the Durango back under the lemon law on 1-20-05. To this day there has been no response to that letter. My husband and children were almost killed!.

67 Car Stall problem

Failure Date: 01/07/2005

Consumer states that in January her vehicle stalled while slowing with no warning during the day. She then pulled over to the side of the road, put the vehicle into park and was able to restart it. Then on February 6,2005, this happened again, while going 60 mph, there was no slowing involved. This happened at night the dash board lights stayed on but she did lose all power to the vehiclet, she put the vehicle into park and the vehicle did restart restart. At that time she took the vehicle into the dealership and was told that because they couldn't duplicate the problem they couldn't do anything but she should check back for computer updates. The vehicle is currently in the service department and they are trying to find the problem with the vehicle.

I was getting on the freeway and accelerated to get on the freeway, car in front of me slowed to exit the freeway so I had to lift my foot of of the gas - rpms dropped, oil pressure light came on and the car stalled in the right lane of the freeway - luckily I was able to pull over to the offramp. Restarted the car with no problem. I have taken the car to the dealer several times for this problem but they say they cannot fix it because they cannot duplicate the problem.
