I had let my Durango sit for about 3 months starting it once a week. One day I went out to start it when I heard a loud knocking shut it off then try to restart the car then I heard a loud bang with really loud knocking. Immediatly I knew it was a rod. I am so angry with Dodge. I am the original owner I took in to the dealership multiple times for the water issue and of course they didnt find a problem or one that they wanted to share with me. Now the Durango sits in my driveway until I decide to get it fixed not sure I want to if its going to happen again. Thank god I bought a kia optima right before this happened or I would be without a car. People wonder why we no longer buy american cars the cost then they dont stand by the product. . . This is not a cheap fix!!!* husband has a Dodge 1500 but we will never by Dodge again!!!!!!.
Vehicle was in driveway after running fine the day before. Started it up and it threw a rod through the motor and oil all over the ground. There were no lights on and vehicle had been properly maintained. Read online that there are hundreds if not thousands of people with this problem.
The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that the vehicle was parked and would not start. The contact shifted into neutral and was able to restart the vehicle. The failure was recurring and on some occasions, the vehicle would not restart until after several attempts. Additionally, the vehicle would hesitate to engage when the brakes were applied. The exterior body and the undercarriage exhibited extensive rust. The vehicle was taken to a repair shop where it was diagnosed that a rod had penetrated and damaged the engine, which would need replacing. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 90000.
Ran great when I parked it. Came out next morning went to start it and heard loud bang. When I got out to see what happened seen oil on the ground. Engine seized. Had hole in the block. Cost to fix this $4300. When will something be done about this. I can't afford to fix it so it will sit till they have a recall.
Rod pierced thru the bottom of engine and locked up (110k miles), family on board and happened while turning at busy intersection. . Had to replace engine used( found one with 70k, waiting on this one to do the same) consumes tons of oil. Electrical within driver seat and cd player are faulty/broken. Rust on rear outer wheel wells. (noticed this rust is apparent in every same model make year that I run across).
Water got into cylinder and bent rod. My understanding is this is a common issue with the 2004 Durango hemi due to design issue of water draining around the engine. Required rebuild or new engine. Unacceptable for a well maintained engine to have this occur, much less, repeatedly occur for many vehicles.
The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that water penetrated the engine and caused a rod to bend. The vehicle was taken to a private mechanic where the failure was confirmed. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 120,000.
Tl-the contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while parked, the hydro extension cylinder fractured. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,000. Djr.
Truck was parked in the driveway and it was raining and without warning the lights turned on and smoke was seen from the hood, the key was not in the ignition or no one was near the truck at the time the fire departmnet was called in and the battery was disconnected. The truck was taken to the dealer for repairs and $1000. 00 was spent on repairs and when the truck was taken for a car wash the same thing happened again the Dodge dealer does not now what causes the water to go in to the engine I was told to change the spark plug wires and cables another $600. 00 but I was told that as water keeps going in the same problem may accur. Tests were done in the Dodge dealer shop and they confirmed that water in going in to the engine but can not explain why and how to solve it. If driving and it rains this may cause an accident if the truck turns off while driving.
My truck was parked in the driveway, it was raining and then the lights started flickering without the keys being in the ignition. I tried to move the truck to the inside of the garage and the smoke came out of the hood and from under the dash. I turned the truck off and the engine remained running, we had to call the fire department because it was smoking and the keys were off. The fire department came and removed the battery and said it may be a short when it rained. The truck is in the garage I cant drive it when it rains because water goes in to the truck from the front I can actually see water leaking into the floor. I owned the truck for 3 years and never had this problem until it reached 100,000 miles.
My wife and I purchased a 2004 Dodge Durango one year ago. Luckily the engine went out while the car was in our driveway. The engine only had 139,044 miles on it. Dodge has a history of the hemi engine going out. If this would have happened while my family was in the car in traffic and someone would have gotten injured or killed there would not be enough money in the world to fix it. Why hasn't Dodge admitted that there is a problem with this engine and recalled them?.
Throught my research I have found that the second generation Dodge Durango's, have a real problem with the front cowel, it seems that every time that it raines heavy or I drive through a an automatic carwash. Soing so caused the engine to run pretty horrible. On August 27 we got a very bad rain in town while driving home that night, I parked my SUV went into my house and a few hrs later I go to leavefor work and I start the enginer and after a few har knocks the engine goes boom. I sent it to a mechanic and they said that I blew a rod through the engine block on my number 6 cylinder due to hydrolock. I feel that Dodge should make a recall on the second genneration Durango's and replace the front cowl with a better design that does not allow water to leak through the cowl and kill motors. As speaking for the customer this we should not have to pay 185 dollars for a design updat for free along with labor.
Drove vehicle on 7-26-13 everything running fine went to drive on 7-29-13 and started truck just to hear a loud bang and thump checked out by mechanic and it has a busted #7 connecting rod and engine block is shot and cant even rebuild this is a real problem that needs to be adressed quickly before any more hard working americans have to dump 4500-6000 dollars in their vehicle because some one wants to cover up a real problem.
My 2004 Dodge Durango sat outside in the rain while I was away on a trip when it returned and restarted it, I heard a load pop and the engine idling rough, got out to check and seen and smelled oil coming out of the side of the engine block. Motors toast, good job Chrysler for a quality product!.
When starting engine piston connecting rod broke, this is a problem with the 2004 Durango with thr 5. 7 hemi engine.
The vehicle was kept in good condition oil changed ect. Vehicle threw a rod at around 30 mph.
Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while traveling 60 mph, the motor suddenly failed. The vehicle was towed to a private mechanic where it was found that a rod in the motor had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was 137,000. Kmj.
Went to start my Durango, heard a bunch of thumping, turned it off and looked under the vehicle and found 3 pieces of the engine.
Went to start up the Durango to go to the doctors. Heard a lot of thumping and shut it off immediately. My dad heard the noise and came over to look at it. Looked underneath the Durango and saw pieces of the engine sitting in the street. Also saw a small child's fist size hole in the engine. My dad is a mechanic so this Durango was kept in good shape, oil changed every 3,000 miles. This is a manufacture flaw that Chrysler needs to address.
When raining vehicle wants to shut off due to water running down the hood/ windshield cowl and directly running onto engine electrical components. Perform a search for vehicle and issue. I am not the only one to have this issue.
I turned the key to start the Durango and it acted like it had a low battery. I tried again and it started, but the engine began to knock badly. I have it now at the mechanic and beginning to look like will need new motor. I can provide more info later. I found on the net others have had the same type problem and thought I would report this. I have only had this car about a month ago. I have driven it with no problems and no noises in the engine. My son, who is a mechanic, says it sound freakish for I had no warning signs. He is high on the 5. 7 engine. I have not contacted anyone for I know the car is out of warranty and I bought it as is, but do not feel the dealer unloaded on me. The Durango seemed fine until that point. I too, might should add that during the week, we had received about three inches of rain, and from what I have read this might be a factor as it looks like there had been a problem with this model with a cowel that was not doing its job.
Went to a drive-through car wash . . . While car was rinsing - lots of water - the engine light came on and the engine started idling roughly. I got out of the wash and got on to the highway with the engine still cutting out sporadically. I drove about a mile and the engine smoothed out, but then I heard a warning bell and noted that my engine temp had shot up. I immediately pulled over. Engine coolant was everywhere. I refilled with new coolant and water and started the engine . . . Drove about another mile and the "hot engine" light came on. I immediately pulled into a parking lot. Called for a wrecker and had the car towed in. Diagnosed as a blown head gasket. $6000 for another engine. I have seen on other Dodge forums where these engines have failed after driving in the rain, or having driven through standing water. I simply went through a car wash. This is a known problem (water intrusion in the engine due to a poorly designed engine cowling) on the 2004 hemi - according to local Dodge dealer.
Engine connecting rod failure on well maintained engine during starting up in the morning. Rain occurred during most of the night.
2004 Dodge Durango with 5. 7 hemi, would always experience a slight engine miss after a hard rain and vehicle would shut off with engine miss if ran through an auto car wash. Had a very heavy rain last night, ran vehicle approximately 50 miles today with no real noticeable problems. Felt slight engine miss while sitting at idle. On my home from picking up our daughter from school, with no warning the engine blew a rod out the side of the block on the passengers side of the vehicle. From reading several different forums it appears this a common problem with this model. Have always had service maintenance performed every 3,000 miles! sounds like a manufactures defect causing engine to blow rod at same location on multiple vehicles! every vehicle in our driveway is a Dodge brand, mopar runs through our veins. Chrysler corp. Knows they have a component failure issue with this year and engine combination and it is time they do something about it before someone is seriously hurt or killed. I was very fortunate to get my vehicle off the highway, praising god our daughter was not driving who just got her learners permit. She (15 years old) most likely would not have been able to react quickly enough to the catastrophic failure to get the vehicle, which died instantly off the busy highway.
Went out to start 2004 Dodge Durango morning after a heavy rain, turned key and rod went thru block. Had problems with it when it rained (caused multiple misfires) found out later after the engine blew that the company was aware of the cowl leakage probelm that allows water to leak onto motor. Think there should of been a recall or letter advising us this needed fixed. Evidentally these complaints arent beeing read or no one is paying attention to them. Guess were all screwed by Dodge. Vehicle was maintained proper every 3000 miles just for information Dodge will not help anyone if engine is out of warranty, they will tell you your on your own. Sale, sale, sale, your Dodge Durango and dont buy another one. Sale it and dont keep because it will happen again. By saling it the problem is then solved because Dodge or these guys wont do anything for you.
I went to start the engine and heard a loud bang, I left it for a few minutes and tried again, and the engine was banging loudly. I got the car towed to the a local Dodge dealership and they said that the car has a blown engine and that I need a replacement.
My 2004 Dodge Durango was garage kept for the first 8 years of its life. We recently moved it to be parked outside and it began to have trouble starting. It was diagnosed as hydrolocking, but they could not reproduce it at my repair shop. After sitting outside again, starting caused a thrown rod ruining the engine and block. It requires a new engine. I have found out that my neighbor had the same thing happen. His vehicle would hesitate when going through car washes, then one day threw a rod when starting. Many other instances seem to be similar in online posts. Please investigate this flaw in the 2004 Dodge Durango vehicles. This is a financially devastating situation for families.
I've owned my 2004 Durango 5. 7 since it was new has had most service done at dealership a few at sears. The Durango was in and out of the shop on numerous occasions for rough idle when raining and loss of fuel mileage. The dealer couldn't find the problem drove the Durango on a Saturday before we had a lot of rain Saturday night and Sunday morning after rain stopped started the Durango only to hear a bang then something knocking in motor took it to the dealer only to be told after spending another 325 dollars that the motor hydra locked and broke a rod. Now the dealership and Dodge both say there is nothing they can do about it. Since it is out of warranty someone needs to hold them accountable for not fixing a problem they know exists. They now want to charge me another $8500 to replace the engine.
I have a 2004 Dodge Durango, when it rains it shake while driving and then the engine would make some noise have it check out it was nothing, at the end of February I had park at home for the weekend when it came to Monday wanted to go out car would not start, tried to power charge the battery started but died right after, had it check out mechanic guy said my engine is gone and I'm still making payment towards that car and it's about 3,000 or more to get another engine. It's not right that all of these people are complaining about the same problem, something need to be done right away. So now the car is just sitting there, while I'm making payments on it.
04 Dodge Durango with 5. 7 hemi engine would run rough every time it would rain. Has been doing this for several months. Mechanics were unable to determine the exact problem. On Feb. 13th went out to start car and it would not start. Thinking it was the starter we took it off had it checked and was told the starter was in perfect condition. So we had the battery checked. . . . . It was fine as well. After getting the starter and battery put back on, the car started and ran for a few days. On Tuesday Feb 26th the car would not start again- this was after a heavy night of rain. Let it set a couple of days. . . . Started right up. On March 12th this problem repeated itself so we took it back to mechanic. Mechanic asked us to let him keep the Durango so he could try to get the problem to repeat itself in order for him to see exactly what was happening when it was failing to start. And then today March 26th, after a couple of rainy/snowy days, he went out to start it and found that the motor is now definitely blown. (the bad thing is we still owe a year and a half on it!!).
I bought this vehicle in March 2012. I started noticing that during a heavy rain or a car wash that it would bog down, idle roughly. I took the vehicle in Feb 2013 to have it looked at since I had been stranded in parking lots, the side of the road and actually got stuck in a car wash because my vehicle cut off. The mechanic told me that my cowel panel needed to be replaced, basically this part was not designed correctly and rain water or water from a car wash was draining into my engine. Had the part replaced for a wonderful price of $236. 00. I started expeirencing the same problem again at the end of April, picked my kids up from school and was stranded in a parking lot for an 1hr bc of the hard rain. Took my vehicle back on may 6th to the vendor mechanic(still under a warranty, doesnt help:( ) and I was told that the part had been replaced that it should work, couldn't figure out why it wasn't working. Contacted Chrysler asking if there was something that could be done, Chrysler doesnt under stand why this newly designed part is not working. So I have at this time, 2 mech/techs telling me that they cant fix the problem because the part should work. Tried an alternate method with weather stripping and silicone to plug up the holes. I pick said vehicle up from the shop on may 8th, drive 3. 2 miles turn on my street an my vehicle completely cuts off! can not get it to crank back. Call the mechanic shop back explain to them what happened take it back the next day they believe that it is the throttle body, my warranty wont cover it. Have my vehicle towed to Dodge and because of this cowel panel leak my intake gaskets are messed up and the cm front and back need to be flashed and reset, totaling out to be $870. 00 but still cant fix the cowel panel. Im damned if I do damned if I dont. This is a huge saftey concern, I need someone to start taking this matter seriously.
I bought the vehicle 9-25-12. It ran great until 1-29-13 when went to start it to go to work it made a loud crack like metal snapping. Turned out to be to be it snapped a rod and ruined the motor. Chrysler is not taking any responsibility for this problem even though it is happening to hundreds of people. This is obviously a motor defect and needs to be addressed. Hundreds of people are losing thousands of dollars, most of which can't afford a new vehicle or the cost of the repair. Good luck to everyone with this problem. Hopefully Dodge will do something about this situation and stand behind their vehicles.
I crunk up my vehicle (Dodge Durango 5. 7l) and it threw an rod that busted my engine block and oil pan.
Similar to all other complaints I read. Was driving the vehicle during rain, engine started ticking. Stopped and had it towed to mechanic. Bent rod and busted piston.
Truck cut out would not restart had stopped at an intersection needed to roll to the side of said intersection with no power steering brakes or engine.
