1 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 10/10/2015

Just purchased this vehicle two months ago from dealer in NJ. We had a hard rain about a month ago, and the Durango wouldn't start immediately. I turned it over again a few hours later and it started with a hard rumble, but it started up. It drove fine for about a month, and just as the wife and I were leaving a gas station, we drove about fifty feet and heard a loud bang. Smoke was coming out of the passenger side of the engine, and the Durango was making a noise like metal was rolling around in the engine. I stopped the car, pulling over to the side of the road. I looked under the Durango and saw oil dripping out from the engine. I got under the car to inspect it a little further and saw a dime size hole in the engine block. I got the car towed back to my home as it was Saturday and the mechanic was not open. The tow truck driver told me that this was the third Durango he picked up that day. Not saying that all of the other cars were towed because a blown engine, but you get the idea. Dealer wouldn't warranty vehicle because of mileage. I couldn't get anyone to warranty the Durango because of the mileage being over 150000. Now im told I will have to buy a remanned/new engine for this clunker. I will be making a complaint to the manufacturer. I know it may not go anywhere. I have read all of the complaints here and on the internet, forums, etc. All the result of blown engines due to "hydro-locking", and the wiper cowl defect were water would get into the engine during heavy rains or car washes. I hope our government would intervene on behalf of its citizens and force Chrysler to issue a recall or at least be responsible for a defect that they created, but I won't hold my breath. My Durango currently has 160131 miles on it, and I guess it's gonna stay that way now because it can't move, and I still owe money on a SUV that I cannot drive. Nhtsa do the right thing.

2 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 05/10/2015

Engine making noise at start up. Had it looked at by several mechanics, including the local Dodge dealer. Said it is probably piston. Had valve covers and heads taken off for possible stuck lifter and found plenty of rust etc. That would indicate water in motor. Several people indicated this is an issue with this model and make with leaking cowling at windshield leaking water onto motor in bad spots causing this failure. Should not be needing new motor at 107k.

3 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 07/27/2013

I only had the darn SUV since 02/12. It rained very bad Friday night 7-26-13 and when I went to start the car the next morning the engine sounds like a hammer is in it or something I know I always had engine problems whenever I got a carwash but nothing like this time it's not driveable and I hope someone can get everyone a recall on these no good engines or motors whatever now I'm stuck in debt!!! its ticking and I dont know the next step to take.

4 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2013

Driving north bound on I 95 in south carolina the check engine light came on and a flapping sound followed by a loss of power and a very rough idle. Pull to off ramp, shut car off, and called for a nearby Dodge dealer and a tow. It seems a "new" engine is required. Dodge does not supply new engines with replacements they use remanufactured engines. The cost with labor will be $7,500. Upon requesting the true cause and broken parts I was told Dodge requires all parts be sent back with the broken engine to remanufacture a future engine. Very convenient to prevent any independent examination of the problem. Research on various sites like edmunds illustrates that this engine failure of the 5. 7l hemi in the second generation Durango's is prevalent. Dodge refuses to help with the repair because of the age of the vehicle.

5 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2013

I went out one morning to due my daily running for the day and when I turned the key and the vehicle started it made a sound like the starter was stuck. I turned it off and called my husband and when I started it again there was a loud pecking in the motor. I took it to a local garage and the man listened to it and told me that the noise was coming from inside the motor and that he did not do motor work. So I found another garage and took it to them and they told me that it was the starter that was bad and that they wouldn't be able to get to it for a week or so. So I called the lot that the vehicle was bought from and he sent me to his garage and the man there told me that he would take a look at it and get back to me. Well he called the next day and told me that all of the noise was coming from the transmission and that it was the fly wheel so he replaced the fly wheel and the called me back and told me that the torque converter was what was making the noise. That the veins in it was bad and rattling around so I had to wait another three days for the part to come in. After he replaced that part and put it all back together and called me and told me that it was done and that it was still making that noise, and that he could not figure out where it was coming from. He started that he called the Dodge garage and talked to the about it and they told him that the crank was bad. And that there was nothing that they could do about it. So I asked them about rebuilding the motor and he laughed at me and told me that if I could find someone that would attempt to rebuild it that he would shake their hand that no one will attempt it. All I could do is have another motor put in it. We have had that 2004 Durango 5. 7 for only a year and we still owe the bank for the vehicle. And an engine is going to cost us 3400. 00 not to mention labor fee for putting it in.

6 Engine Noise problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2010

The contact owns a 2004 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that upon starting the vehicle the engine sound was similar to a "lawn mower". There were no warning lights illuminated on the instrumental panel upon starting the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer who informed the contact that she needed to replace the engine due a piston fracturing a block in the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 96,000. The VIN was unavailable.
