I almost died, I escaped my car moments before it completely exploded into flames. I was driving down the interstate and it said it was overheating for a couple seconds and then the car went completely dead going 70 miles per hour. My steering wheel locked up so I fought to pull it off the road and stop it, I had a bad feeling so I checked the front of the car but it was inflamed once I got out and my seat was consumed in fire.
Was driving 2005 Dodge Durango when it stalled and stopped running at a bottom of a hill. Would not start . Replaced idiole control sensor, starter, battery, crank shaft sensor and relays. Started ran for 30 minutes again just died in the middle of the road. Will not start. If someone would of come over the hills could of hit us with sever injury or possibly death. Still wont run crank over wont run.
Engine is intermittent stalling when driving or taking a sharp corner at low speed. The vehicle engine has just stalled when driving at different speeds. No check engine lite on at all the engine just stalls and I can restart the engine almost all the time right away the repair facility has no idea what is going on. Need to get this figured out before an accident happens.

My car caught on fire from the hood area (I have photos) and air bags never deployed . I took my car in and the air bags were replaced but never deployed and car is a total lost due to fire.
After coming to a complete stop at a stop sign and allowing children to cross in the crosswalk, my vehicle try's to accelerate/jump forward even though my foot has the brake pedal completely pushed down. The schools in my town get packed with traffic and you have to kinda of stop and go at a slow pace for long periods of time. My 2005 Dodge Durango try's to nudge forward on its own when slowly stopping and going in traffic. Very dangerous for this to be happening around elementary schools with children around. I hope this known safety issue is able to be resolved. This is a daily occurrence, whether I'm picking up or dropping off kids at school, or I'm creeping along very slowly stopping and going looking for a parking spot, or at a red light or slowing down before entering a driveway, or anytime I'm in a driverhru and I have to creep along and stop and go. Would love for this to be resolved. I will even pay for it, I just would like it to be fixed because it's dangerous.
It is a awd car but sometime the 4lo light comes on with a very annoying noise from the bottom of the car or engine, then the speed being slowed down significantly, the car becomes hard to keep going. The streaking sound and the speed being reduced like the break being stepped on abrubtly makes me pull over for safety.
I was about to enter a storage facility and was slowly easing my foot off the brake when when the engine revved loudly my SUV lurched forward and accelerated out of my control tore through the storage gate that didn't finish opening totally destroying the facilitiy main gate. The SUV kept accelerating as I was hitting the brake then finally stopped.
Engine cuts off at any speed, but especially at low idle, when nearing an intersection, or turning the vehicle at a lower, safer speed. This happens on highway, residential streets, stoplights, basically anywhere at anytime.
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango with the 5. 7 hemi engine. . It has 80,000 miles and just recently the engine started shutting off at random times when driving, mostly when I hit a bump in the road. . I have researched this with the national highway safety board website and see there is a hundreds of complaints from feburary 2005 thru present . . There was an investigation opened in 2005 pe05-027 then it was transferred to an engineering analysis ( ea05-018) and then nothing. . I would like to know if the NHTSA dropped the ball on this?? there is no further answers to the complaint. . Please advise me what do I have to do to get a n answer to this problem, which is a manufactures error that is going to get me killed or someone else.
When in motion, vehicle's rpm will drop to 0 (randomly, no way to tell when coming), along with a loss of power steering and various electronics within the vehicle. Problem is usually fixed by restarting vehicle, but it has been very dangerous - especially on the highway. Has happened at least 5 times during my ownership of the vehicle (4 years).
When stopping or turning at slower speeds my car dies all of a sudden this has put me in situations where I have almost wrecked , after taking it to the dealer a few times and then telling me nothing is wrong I find out that this has been investigated on 2 occasions but no recall !!!!! this is putting my family , myself and other people on the road at risk this happens when I am slowing down coming to a stop.
The contact owns a 2005 Dodge Durango. While driving at any speed, the vehicle lost power without warning. The vehicle was pulled over and restarted. The dealer was unable to diagnose the failure. The failure recurred several times. The manufacturer was made aware of the complaint, but did not assist. The failure was not remedied. The failure mileage was approximately 86,000.
Opened the drivers door after a storm and observed standing water in the drivers side floorboard. Tried to start but the battery was dead. (daily driver w battery @ 1yr old). Placed battery on a charger and was able to start motor. Engine was reving between idle and 1500 rpm rapidly and would not respond to throttle inputs. Instrument cluster lights all on and navigation display was on but not legible. Looked for the source of the water, and it appears to be coming from around the drivers side front pillar area and leaking down the inside kick panel.
While driving at variable speeds my 2005 Dodge Durango slt 5. 7l truck, without warning, will shut-off making it hard to stop & steer to safety. This has happened several times but the most recent & severe time was yesterday, I was at a speed of 55 mph on 695 when my Durango shut-off without warning. I was able to pull onto the shoulder without causing a accident. My Dodge was able to restart without warning lights flashing or indication but will randomly shut-off without warning at least 4-6 times a week while driving.
Durango quit runing wile going 45 mph.
The transfer case shifts by its self. The vehicle shifts into lock all on it's own, then the svc 4wd light comes on. Sometimes when the vehicle is turned off you can hear the transfer shift back and forth from awd to 4 lock now its stuck in 4lo this happens stationary and in motion.
Vehicle would high idle then when put in gear it would not take gas and would continue to run even after putting it in park and turning the key off and taking it out. This is a very serouis problem I would like an investigation to see if anyone else has had this same problem. I would like a response please this scares me alot.
The Dodge Durango 2005 model in my case will shut off very often now when the steering wheel is turn. . . This often times happen when pulling in or backing out of a parking lot and the vehicle would take up 5-20mins to restart. This happen when the vehicle is cold or warm it doesn't matter. I have seen online this is a wide spread problem with the Durangos and I'm wondering why are folks allowed to suffer through this issue in the mean time the dealership pretend as if they're not aware of the issue which is clearly a lie from all the complaint I've seen online about this very issue. . . Going back for years. . . .
Engine will without warning lurch forward. It will also completely shut down making steering and braking extremely difficult. This vehicle had no codes showing and repair shop can't replicate the problem this lurching of the vehicle has occurred almost daily. And has completely shut down twice. I drive with two kids in the car and this is extremely dangerous. Their are several complaints with the exact same problem.
While I'm driving down the road it could be the interstate or in town, doing 30 to 55 miles per hour depending on where I am, my husband's engine light will turn on in his 2005 Dodge Durango after the wheel begins stiffening and my lights all shut off and I am costing into opposing traffic lane or in the middle of traffic with my 4 children and myself, sometimes it is just me and once it was with my husband and children. The engine light will stay solid and all of this happens after when SUV will cut off with no warning, instantly my steering wheel gets stiff and I cannot turn, my lights go off and the radio and headlights shut off. I have no control over the vehicle at the time. This us happening more and more. This also has happened when I am coming to a stoplight or a stop sign other times when I'm coming out of a stop and the SUV is still running at that time. Very unpredictable and dangerous. No warnings, he has had the SUV 1 year.
Vehicle misfires during acceleration. Almost caused vehicle to be rear ended pulling out into traffic. After having it looked at by the dealer, found out I am not the only one with the problem. It stems from a design defect in the rain cowl that allows water to pass through the windshield wiper opening where it runs onto the engine and pools in the spark plug holes, causing a short. Chrysler redesigned the cowl to correct the problem but did not notify owners or recall the vehicles to fix the issue.
I was on my home from work going about 40mph. I got to a redlight before I stopped the SUV jerked. And when I press the gas paddle to go , the SUV would not move. I then tried to put it in another gear it was on but it still would not move. The police officer that pushed it out of the street said that it was the transmission. Also you can jst be driving the SUV would just stop. This is very dangerous, and can cause accidents. On one occasion I had to nearly run off of the road to keep from having and accident. I think that Chrysler llc should replace my 2005 Dodge Durango. Being that I'm a single grandparent and now I have no transportation. So I can't get to work to provide for my granddaughter.
While cruising a back road near home the Durango suddenly shut off leaving me no lower steering or brakes. It was terrifying. I was lucky to be only going approximately 25 mph as I was just cresting a hill. I was able to have enough momentum to guide the truck onto a side street. It restarted immediately upon putting it in park again. And I was able to drive it to my parents house without incident and then again back to my house later in the day. There was no warning lights that lit on the dash and no other indication that there was a. Malfunction. The rpms were smooth, no rough engine. Terrified to drive this truck now.
Started Durango and let it warm up at idle for 3 mins. Started to hear a squeak then a slight tapping and now sounds like loose metal in the engine. Oil changed every 3-4k miles. Had oil changed today and now worse.
Every time it rains the car rides rough. It's scary. We own 2 of these and found out that this isn't being addressed by Dodge. Totally disappointed in lack of consideration by the Dodge corp.
While driving on interstate from work, oil light come on. I immediately pulled over and checked the oil. The level on the dipstick was in the safe zone. I then had it towed to my mechanic that told meth the motor would need to be replaced. I never had any other problems with the Durango until then. Oil was always changed at 3,000 miles. The mechanic told me that there is sludge build up because of the design/angle of the ports that doesn't allow the oil to move freely. Apparently is this an ongoing problem and this should be a recall for this, no one has the money to put almost $4,000 inanother engine.
I was in nyc last week. I was making a turn in the city the truck cut off. A tractor trailer and several cars were behind me. I was able to put the car in park and re-start it. However, if someone behind was not paying attention that accident could have been terrible. Prior to that I was driving on the fdr and truck cut off on me again, while in traffic. Again I had to put the truck in park and start it up again. I know good and well Chrysler knows about this problem because I see too many Durango owners with the same problem. Please create a recall we and our families lives are depending on it!!!!.
Driving in my neighborhood at 35 mph and the engine turned off completely! I coasted to a full stop, turned off the ignition. . . Waited 10 seconds and then turned the ignition back on and drove off. Vehicle also feels very sluggish especialy driving over 55 mph. You must really push the pedal down to accelerate. Engine shutting off is soooo dangerous. God for bid this will happen when im driving with my children in the car while on the freeway!!!.
2005 Dodge Durango hemi. When driving approx 30 mph my Durango just died in the middle of a very busy intersection. I lost all steering and brakes. Its a miracle I didn't cause a 20 car pile up. I was just about to get on a major highway. I have 3 kids who were luckily not in the vehicle with me. They towed my Durango to a local shop who could not determine what was wrong. They inturn towed it to a Dodge dealership where they told me right away that the valve spring went and now I need to replace the engine. I cannot believe there has not been a recall on this, especially when I see how many other have had the same issue. Dodge needs to step up to the plate and take care of all of us with these engine problems. At this point I'd rather buy a Toyota that another Dodge. At least they recalled their vehicles and took ownership of the problems they were having. As it stands I have been out of a vehicle for 2 weeks now and no signs of getting it back soon. I have been told that the new engine I had to buy at $8,000 is backordered and cannot get until Dec!!! I have 3 kids and no longer a vehicle to fit everyone in. I asked about a rental to help me out but was also told Dodge won't do that either.
I have a 2005 Dodge Durango that was purchased from cars plus in lenoir, nc in March 2010. Starting about three weeks ago the vehicle began to lose all power while it was being driven if you start around a turn or hit the brakes. This does not occur every time you take a turn or hit the brakes. In the past three weeks it has happened 8 times. When this happens the vehicle looses all power. You have no brakes and no power steering. There are no warnings this is going to happen. We have had it to the local Dodge dealer twice and someone else once. Nothing pulls up on the computer and they can't find anything wrong. Dodge has told me this is my problem, even though there are about 800 complaints about this problem in the 2005 Durangos on the computer, because my warranty is out. I am afraid to drive this vehicle because I don't want to be in an accident. I don't want any injury to come to my children or someone else's children. I am paying payments on a vehicle I can't drive and don't want to trade it in and someone else get stuck with this vehicle and possibly get injured driving it. I don't have any more options and would like to know what to do. My insurance company has told me I would be responsible for any accident in this vehicle because they can't find a defect. I don't want to trade my vehicle in to the dealership and just pass the problem along, but I need a dependable vehicle. Please advise me what to do with this safety issue.
For the fourth time in as many months, my 2005 Dodge Durango has completely lost power without warning. This past February, I had the dealer put in nearly $2000 worth of work in addition to fixing the recalled issues of the instrument cluster and fuel tank. The power loss happened after this and after having taken it back once to the dealer I will not take it to them again due to poor service. I have also had my local mechanic run a diagnostic test on the car, but nothing comes up. The car simply loses power and I am forced to try to steer it to the side of the road, put it in park, and start it up again. No "check engine" or other warning lights come on. I am now very concerned for my safety. This car is 5 years old, very well maintained, and has only 56,000 miles on it. If someone from NHTSA cares to check on the edmunds. Com forum, they will note many similar complaints with the hemi 5. 7 engine on the Durango. I would like for the NHTSA to further investigate this dangerous situation.
Our 2005 Dodge Durango with a 5. 7 hemi engine shut itself off out of the blue while driving home. It is the third time it has happened in the last 3 months. Driving speed was around 35 mph. It happened as we let up on the throttle. It does restart but it is very hard to stop and control when it happens.
The vehicle bucked, as if misfiring. It occurs frequently since that time. It also has a starting issue. Sporadic non-response when attempting to start.
