This occurs at every fill up of the vehicle and is very difficult to prevent, even once I became aware of the issue. The gasoline exist the vehicle with considerable force the amount can vary but is typically equivalent to ~20 FL oz. Not only is this a obvious fire/explosion risk, but is also a hazardous chemical risk as the gasoline often makes contact with clothes and skin during refueling. I notified Dodge of this issue was given a case # however was notified that Dodge does not consider this an issue and will not fix the issue unless it is a recall. There is a very well documented evidence from the internet to support that this is not an isolated issue and that many other Durango owners are having the same issue. . Read more...

Apparently this is a widespread problem and a recall has been issued on 2006-2007 models but not 2005's like mine. . 29 Gasoline Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/08/2011

On 03-08-2011 while putting fuel into my 2005 Dodge Durango I was soaked in gas at the end of the fueling. My wife advised me this has happened before at different gas stations, some fuel escaping through the filler neck at the end of refueling and spraying persons fueling the vehicle, as well as spilling on the vehicle and the ground. I checked with NHTSA and found out that there are 2 recalls on 2005 Dodge Durango for this exact issue (NHTSA campaign id numbers 09v003000 and 05v034000). Per insructions on those recall summaries I've contacted Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 on 03-09-2011. I've advised them of the problem with my vehicle and the fact that there are two recalls on the same make, model, and year as my vehicle. Chrysler assigned me a case number 20513614 and a case manager identified as rosie with phone number 1-800-763-8422, ext. 66049. This case manager said that while 2005 Dodge Durango have been recalled due to the fuel spilling at the end of refueling, my vehicle didn't have the right VIN number to be recalled. The case manager told me to set an appointment with a Dodge dealer, steve white Dodge in hickory, nc, to see what was causing the fuel spill. On 03/15/2001 my vehicle was checked at the Dodge dealership. It was determined by this Dodge dealer that the fuel does escape at the end of the fueling and fits the description on NHTSA recalls 09v003000 and 05v034000. However, I would have to pay myself for the repair since my VIN doesn't match. I've contacted the Chrysler case manager. I've asked her specifically if the problem with my vehicle matches the ones that have been recalled. The case manager acknowledged that it was the same same problem, same make, model, and year, but not the right VIN. She offered to reimburse only $140 from my repair bill. Chrysler should reimburse the whole repair bill, since there are recalls on this vehicle.
