36 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2017

Check battery light came on, battery lost charge, replaced battery and it lost charge again before able to test alternator. Alternator was red hot. Will need new battery and alternator. Was a recall in 2014 for alternator as well (appears that recall was already done on this car). Car died at intersection waiting to turn.

37 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/24/2017

Alternator short, serious sudden loss of all electrical and engine control. Serious safety issue that could have potentially caused fatal crash.

38 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2017

The battery light indicator illuminated in the driver's information panel. Within another minute the drivers seat belt warning began chiming & flashing in the display also, even though the driver's seatbelt was buckled. At this time all of the indicators in the driver's information panel began sporadically flashing. Within the next few minutes, the power steering stopped working & the car shut completely down. I had the vehicle towed to a mechanics shop. There, they replaced the battery & alternator. Upon replacing the parts, the mechanic listed "more issues exist, vehicle still does not stay running. Possible issue with ecm and/or cac". The mechanic also pointed out to me safety recall p60/NHTSA which was for a 2012 Dodge Durango (same model year as mine). When I contacted the Dodge dealer about this recall, he instructed me that it was only for the 160 amp alternator. Mine contained the 180 amp alternator & was built about a month before the recalled vehicles. However, both the 160 amp & the 180 amp alternator seem to suffer from the same problems. With only a short check of the internet, I was able to identify over 100 cases of 180 amp Dodge Durango suddenly losing power while being driven & causing catastrophic electrical failure; some traveling as fast as 40-50 mph. Lucky for me, I was only going 10-15 mph within the city limits of bloomington, illinois. Although it was around a curve the issue began while I was driving straight on a 6 lane bypass driving between 40-45 mph. I can not begin to explain how unbelievably frustrating it is for the automaker to deny their culpability on an issue that is putting thousands of families in grave danger & equally as disappointing to force their own customers to foot the bill for their own careless mistake.

39 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2017

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. While driving 50 mph, every indicator on the instrument panel illuminated, the windshield wipers activated independently, the power steering failed, and the vehicle stalled and lost all power. The vehicle was towed to crossroads Chrysler Jeep Dodge ram (4510 whitehill blvd, prince george, va 23875) where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and stated that the contact would need to pay out of pocket because the VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). The approximate failure mileage was 112,000.

40 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2017

As vehicle was being parked in drive way check engine light came on. As driver walked past vehicle on the way in house he smelled something so popped hood and noticed smoke coming from what appears to be alternator and noticed burn marks. Power seemed to be gone as remote would not work to lock doors. Roadside assistance came and when he connected a little battery pack type thing to battery to try and charge there were sparks. When he attached jumper cables, they got fried to the point the handle was separated from the cable and just short of catching fire but the other car was turned off to avoid the fire. Truck was towed to shop. They said they could not get car to even jump or start using battery pack and when they replaced the battery all together whatever the issue is fried that battery. Again was able to smell something. Was advised it appears to be associated with the wiring. On 5/10 car was taken to Dodge dealer for check engine light and was told fuel pump was issue since relay had been previously replaced as part of recall but when they took relay off they found burn marks on it as well and replaced it.

41 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/23/2017

While driving, the alternator failed causing a near crash with myself, my daughter, and two granddaughters in the vehicle. I never received a recall notice for this issue, but have never heard of an failed alternator actually shutting down a car while driving! with a little research I found that there is, in fact, a recall for this exact issue, on this year vehicle, and yet somehow my VIN is not included in the recall?? it's a $1700 repair. . Besides the expense, it's a huge safety issue. My alternator failed, exactly as warned in the recall -- the repair should not be at my expense. This is not ok!.

42 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2017

My battery light came on. Within minutes all the other lights on my dashboard came on, my air starting blowing hot and then it started to stall. Luckily I was on a small road and was able to coast off onto the grass. The car was dead and smoke was pouring from the alternator. I went and bought a new battery and alternator. Within in 2 minutes of installing both, my car did the same exact thing. I had to have it towed to the dealership. I was told it was the alternator. I explained that I had already replaced it and think it could be more severe. They told me they would replace the alternator with labor I'm looking at $1200. That's not including if that doesn't fix the issue. They sais it could have fried my (pcm) power control module which could cost me at least $1000 more plus labor. How is it they aren't recalling the 2012 Durango with 180 amp alternator but all the others? this car is only 5 years old, I shouldn't have had to replace the alternator going on 3 times now. I don't feel safe driving my son in this car anymore. I've seen enough complaints saying this caused accidents since the car just dies while driving.

43 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/08/2017

My Durango died while driving. I had just had the battery tested and was told it was probably the alternator. I did not make it home 2 miles away. It was towed to a firestone who replaced the alternator and battery to discover the pcm was ruined. They told me that there was a recall for a 2012 Dodge Durango but it was for the 160 amp alternator and not for hte 180 amp alternator. They said the recall number was p60 and everything that happened to my Durango matches the signs and symptoms of the recall. My Durango was later towed to the dealership who replaced the battery, alternator and pcm.

44 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 03/30/2017

Upon arriving home, a strong odor of electrical burning was present coming from the engine compartment. The electrical light came on and smoke was visible coming from the engine compartment. The car was parked in the garage and was immediately turned off. Similar to recall p60; however our car was not included in the recall because of a different alternator and slightly different engine type.

The failure mileage was 56,000.

48 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2016

Car wouldnt start from being parked, smelled burning under hood. Was able to take a battery jump, but could only go half mile before stalling without warning. Had alternator tested bad. Replaced it twice& still having problems all testing bad. Had no warning except battery icon flashed on briefly & then went off prior to incident.

49 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2016

2012 Dodge Durango. Consumer writes in regards to alternator shorted out and caused the entire electrical system to fail. Consumer VIN# not listed for alternator recall notice information. The consumer referenced recall # 14v630000. However, he was informed his vehicle identification number was not included in the recall.

50 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2016

I smelled burning while driving on a city street. The car just died. I got out raised hood. Smelled burning at alternator. Car is completely dead. Called tow truck. . Next day. Car towed to all tech auto. Disgnosis- 180amp alternator bad and caused extensive damange to timp and pcm. Paid 760. 00 for replaced alternator. Towed to dealership - timp and pcm shorted out, 2066. 00 to repair. My car is currently at the dealership waiting for me to earn the money to repair. Im praying that I will have an additional 2066. 00 in two weeks so I can get repairs completed. Fca recalled 160amp and 220amp. How do they skip over the 180amp in the Durango crew? you won't have as many comiants because there weren't as many manufacturerd as the other models - unfair! send someone to investigate before repairs are made.

51 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2016

In November of 2014, Dodge issued a recall of the 160 amp alternators due to early failure and risk of fire. Saturday, August 20, 2016, the alternator on this vehicle failed with the same symptoms: high heat, burning smell, and the vehicle suddenly stopped running. However, this vehicle has a 180 amp alternator. There are other reports of the 180 amp alternator failing in very similar ways as the 160 amp. The recall must be expanded to include all alternators for the dogdge Durango. A failure at less than 60,000 miles, and a failure in a manner that presents a risk of fire is a major issue and needs to be addressed quickly.

52 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 08/18/2016

Alternator failed in my 2012 Dodge Durango. I have only had my vehicle for 4 years 3 months, 48,904 miles and do mostly city driving. The vehicle was in motion when I began to smell a burnt scent. Soon after I noticed the air conditioner power minimized rapidly and the burnt scent continued. Luckily at that point I was getting home and therefore I immediately parked my vehicle. Was inspected by a mechanic who confirmed the problem was with the alternator.

53 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. While driving 55 mph, the low battery, abs, and traction control warning lights illuminated. The failure recurred twice. In addition, a burning odor emitted in and outside the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed and burned the serpentine belt. The vehicle was repaired. The VIN was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system). The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 66,500.

54 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/28/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that while driving at 30 mph, the vehicle stalled. The contact was unable to restart the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The vehicle was then towed to a dealer for inspection. The technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The contact was aware of NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system) but the VIN was not included. The failure mileage was 50,000.

55 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/21/2016

Driving on a major highway in NJ on 7/21/16 , all the car warning lights went on randomly and unexpectedly, windshield wipers went on on their own, radio shut off, all power was lost and car shut down almost immediately with limited or no braking or steering power and the car would not turn on any longer. I tried to make it safely to the side of the road (left shoulder was the closest) with big trucks and fast moving cars going by. Had it towed to an auto body shop which took 2 days to diagnose the problem which they deemed a failure of the main board which caused the alternator to fail which caused the battery to seize and fail as well. The costs of repair I had to pay to fix the issue on my 4 year old car with 92k miles on it was approx $1,500. The symptoms and diagnosis were almost identical to the p60 recall issued by chrylser but when I inquired with Chrysler about getting my vehicle covered under the recall and reimbursed for the costs of repair, they claimed that the recall did not apply to my car bc it is 180 amp vs 160 amp (?) but it is very obvious and clear to me that what happened to my car was exactly the same as the p60 recall. Not to mention it was a very dangerous situation that I encountered with my car stopping in the middle of a busy highway. It could have been tragic had I not been able to navigate it well. Chrysler is basically refusing to extend the recall to my VIN # and not reimbursing my repair costs.

56 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. While driving 55 mph, the battery warning light illuminated and a whining sound was heard. In addition, while parked, an odor of burnt wires was noticed in the vehicle. The failure recurred intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the alternator failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The VIN was unknown. The failure mileage was 58,000.

57 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/02/2016

The alternator in my Durango failed suddenly. We luckily had just arrived at my daughter's day car when the car shut off on its own and we noticed smoke. When we got out to check under the hood, the alternator was smoking! I had to have the Durango towed to my dealership as there was no power to the Durango at all. The dealership attempted to start the vehicle, and could not start the car using a jumper box, or by jumping it with another vehicle. The alternator had completely drained the battery. We were told a few days later that they were attempting to locate an alternator as it was back ordered, and it could be up to 6 weeks or more before they could get one. When we inquired as to why, we were told there was a recall on the alternator for many Chrysler and Dodge vehicles and that even though our Durango falls in the specific years, it was not part of the recall. When they finally called to let us know the Durango was ready to be picked up, we drove maybe a half mile down the road and the battery light came on. We returned it immediately back to the dealership. A couple of days later, they informed us that because of the alternator failure, the engine control module was bad and needed to be replaced. Now, the dealership is telling us that the ecm is no longer functioning properly because of the issues with the alternator and that we will not be able to drive the vehicle without it. They contacted Dodge to inform them of the faulty alternator that caused the ecm failure and Dodge told them, too bad.

58 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Dash lights started flashing car shut off, charged battery, alternator started smoking, replaced alternator, replaced battery, battery is still draining.

59 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2016

Alternator failure as common with the p60 recall. The alternator in my Durango failed suddenly and we lost all power. We were lucky in that we were on a residential road at low speed and able to pull to the side safely. The alternator was smoking. My Durango is not covered by this recall so I felt it important to report this is still happening with other alternators with the v6. I did call into Chrysler and they confirmed my vehicle was not covered by p60.

60 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2016

My 180 amp alternator stopped working while my wife was driving the vehicle on a city street. The current p60 recall only covers the 160 amp alternator, but it should cover both pieces of equipment. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where it is sitting, waiting to get a new 180 amp alternator installed. I was quoted $900 parts and labor for the repair.

61 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 02/15/2016

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. While exiting the highway, the vehicle lost power and various warning indicators flickered. The vehicle was coasted to the side of the road and then towed to the contact's residence. The contact replaced the battery and drove the vehicle to the dealer. The mechanic diagnosed that the alternator assembly needed to be replaced. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 15v879000 (electrical system, interior lighting). The contact notified the manufacturer. The failure mileage was not available. Parts distribution disconnect.

62 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/31/2015

While driving battery red light on dashboard light up make it home just 1 mile away. Next day when start the car to see if anything change or find anything wrong that I can see. The car start no battery light, no longer on, after like a minute I start backing out of my driveway and I heard a noise (like a buzzing) noise I drive back in my driveway, while engine running I open the hood to look from where the noise was coming and I see lot of smoke was coming from alternator I went shot off engine and it got the throttle body red light on the dash board on and the smoke intensified I shot off the engine and disconnect the battery to prevent the car to got on fire . The smoke still coming out of the alternator for approximately 15 to 20 minutes after I shot off and disconnect the battery. Now I don't even want to connect the battery back. This is avery unsafe situation if I would be driving on a highway and the alternator fail it would disable the engine making it hard to steer the car and apply the brakes the power steering pump in this car is electric no electric power no steering assist , no engine running no break assist and the chance the battery fail because of short or burn alternator can cause the battery to overheat the battery is inside the car under passenger seat. I was lucky that I notice the situation right away and take action to prevent an accident or a fire .

63 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 08/13/2015

When the gas pedal was pushed down to accelerate there was a high pitched whizzing sound that was associated with every rev of the engine. After driving approx. 8 minutes the battery light came on the dash panel. Took the car to a repair shop and the battery was replaced. After replacing the battery, it was deemed the alternator was bad and in need of replacement. The alternator was replaced the next day and the problem was fixed. Dodge currently has a recall (p60) on Durangos from the same years as ours. However, Dodge says my alternator does not fit the recall because it is 180 amp and not 160 amp. When the alternator was replaced, there was a backorder on the alternator that fits my Durango. I found this ironic and questioned why there would be a shortage of alternators if this type wasn't experiencing failures. My issue fits the same symptoms as many other Dodge owners. I feel the alternator was bad and perhaps this is just one of many that Dodge isn't recognizing at this time. There is no recourse as of now through Dodge but I want to make someone aware of this issue to prevent someone from dealing with the same issue. If we would have driven too far the car may have shut off and caused a hazard on the roadway. I feel this is too new a vehicle to have such detrimental failures. Dodge has been of very little help. In fact, fiat Chrysler made it abundantly clear that my vehicle did not fit the recall and when I asked why a group of people had to be affected to care there was no response. Please do not let this die! thank you for your time.

64 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2015

Immediately following a scheduled oil change at the dealership, the check engine light came on and I noticed a burning smell as I was going down the slight decline from the dealer lot onto the street. I returned to the service department where they inspected the car and diagnosed the issue as a failed alternator. Because of the costly repair, I opted to get a second opinion. This mechanic also diagnosed the issue as a faulty alternator. He checked the VIN for a recall, and did not see my VIN listed, though there was a recall for the alternator on Dodge Durangos made in 2011-2014, matching the specs of my auto. Because the car was a 2012, I asked if this is common for such a "young" car. He did not think it was a typical issue. What he also thought was odd was that tracking down a replacement alternator to fit the vehicle was difficult; there was only one compatible part available within a six state radius, and was informed that they were not presently being manufactured to accommodate the need. We were lucky to secure the item and have it overnighted. The lack of parts and alleged hold on manufacturing drew the assumption that 1) there were several of the same model experiencing the same issues and/or 2) additional recall was imminent. He strongly encouraged me to contact Chrysler to request reimbursement and offered to act as an expert witness and testimony to what he encountered. Fca (Chrysler) was not responsive.

65 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2015

I had an alternator replaced after my car completely died while driving in November. I found out that they put in a similar part but didn't put in the official replacement part until 8 months later. I could have had the car for again and put myself and son in danger if it would have happened on the highway like the first time. Now they are finally doing it but didn't tell me it wasn't complete until I brought my car in for another issue. During that time I started getting a bad key message and the red security system dot on my indicator panel wouldn't shut off. At times leaving me stranded and wouldn't start. I took it in 3 weeks ago and they said they fixed it. Then out of the blue it started happening again and I had to request a tow since it wouldn't start. They are saying it's the win module. , but I am not convinced. I want to know if this can be an effect of the alternator zapping the system when my car died and all the electrical components went haywire. It zapped my battery and it had to be replaced. The same win module in my car that is in other makes and models has been recalled in several other cars but not mine. This needs to be looked into.

66 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 04/11/2015

First incident: I drove about 80 miles out of town. Once I made it to my destination I returned to my truck to find out that the doors wouldn't unlock. I was able to take the key out of the remote to open the door. My truck wouldn't start. It was towed to the nearest Dodge dealer. I found out that the alternator had a recall and I was experiencing a known problem. I had to purchase a new battery and they replaced the alternator. I drove 5 minutes away from the dealership and my truck started to shut down on the highway. The sensor lights started coming on for the battery, breaks, etc. And the windshield wipers came on. After about a minute later my truck completely shut down. It is back at the dealership and I'm waiting for solution.

67 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 01/15/2015

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system); however, the recall remedy was not effective. The contact stated that while driving into a parking space, the engine warning light illuminated and an abnormal noise emitted from the engine. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician diagnosed that the alternator needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 31,800.

68 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2014

This vehicle has 2 recalls on it. The first is the brake booster. We were told we would be notified when the part was available after calling the dealer in February of 2014. It was fixed Dec 29, 2014. In Dec of 2014, we received another recall notice for the alternator, and were told parts were not available. On December 20th, 2014, we were leaving on a family vacation, loaded and ready to go when the vehicle failed. The car was completely dead and would not start. The dealer picked up the vehicle while I loaded my family in 2 different trucks to make a 90 mile drive to the cruise terminal where we paid $55 to park each truck. I came back Sunday the 28th of February and they had not repaired the car, stating they wanted $90 labor to replace the battery and $275 for a new battery, which was damaged by the alternator. After hours of calling, Chrysler finally approved a new battery, but the old one was put back in and charged. Due to being out of the country, I had to use e-mail to my mechanic to get things authorized. We did not get a rental for the entire week and my mother-in-law was left home without a vehicle for the week(christmas week). The alternator that was put on the car is still under recall and could fail again and we were told we would need to bring it back in for a new alternator at a later date. The new alternator is starting to make a humming noise like the last one and neither Chrysler or the dealer will do anything about it because it is still working. My wife will not drive the vehicle until it is fixed due to the warning of the car dying or catching fire and having our 3 year old with her if it happens. The trade in value is down due to so many being traded in and I will be left $10000 upside down on the vehicle. I asked for a rental until it is fixed correctly and was told that could not happen.

69 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2014

The contact owns a 2012 Dodge Durango. The contact stated while driving approximately 70 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The engine failed to restart and the vehicle was towed to the dealer where the alternator was replaced. The failure recurred the same day the repair was performed. An additional repair was performed and the dealer replaced the alternator connector. The VIN was included in NHTSA campaign number: 14v634000 (electrical system) however, the part needed was unavailable. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 75,000.

70 Alternator/generator/regulator problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2014

To date I have not received a recall letter from fiat Chrysler America (fca) re; the alternator assembly must be replaced and the tipm contains an internal fuel pump relay that can fail. In oct 2014 I was verbally informed by lustine Dodge in woodbridge va about these recalls, but told that they had no remdy or parts to fix the issue. Following the news report it appears that fca is dragging their feet to fix the issue and putting drivers of the the vehicles in question in danger.
