We purchased a 2005 Dodge Durango used March 11, 2006 with 16,568, miles on it. On March 13th two days after we purchased it and 16,614 miles later (48 miles later) the truck broke down on the highway! we had the truck towed in to earnhardts Dodge, find out the ring gear and pinion set needs replaced, differential side bearings - all axles replace (includes case and side gears if necessary) this is quoted from all my receipts. 2nd time around (July 18,2006) - now has 24,795 miles on it, rear end issues again! again this is the repairs - seal, axle shaft oil - replace all other axles-right. Brake pads, disc brake-both sides rear replace due right rear axle seal leaking contaminated pads, rotor has fluid burned into the surface. Replaced right axle seal and brakes. Also had to replace watts link sway bar, replaced bell crank and links. Replaced both rear stabilizer bars again. 3rd time (January 10,2007) - now at 38,051 miles replace seal, axle shaft oil, replace all other axles - replace seal, drive pinion oil replace all others. 4th time, (January 29,2007) now at 39,329 again, replaced bell crank, watts link. 5th time (July 16,2007) - 52,058 failed bearing in rear diff, need to replace ring & pinion and all bearings- cost - $1,474, (why would I want to pay this much when they haven't been able to fix this problem?) told them to put the truck back together, we can't afford to fix it. 6th time - now after researching this vehilce, we found out, earnhardts Dodge/Hyundai in gilbert arizona (same placed we purchased it at) January 17,2006) (now 6 repairs) noticed the Durango had rear differtial leaks, they replaced seal, drive pinion oil and all three parts - then returned the vehicle to stock when it was finished at 16,614 miles! just 48 miles before we purchased the vehicle!!.

We were driving east on I-90, just east of gary, in. Our SUV caught fire, we could smell smoke, and we made an emergency stop at exit 17. Another car pulled up behind us, and the driver said he saw flames under the car. My wife and I ran from the car in fear. The car had a full tank of gas, and we felt our lives were in jeopardy. I told the toll booth attendant that my car was on fire, got a fire extinguisher from her, and she volunteered to call the fire department. I put out the fire that was on the driver's side of the front axle. We called our state farm agent to report the incident. The SUV was towed to gregory Dodge in highland park, IL to assess the damage, where it is still being evaluated. As a result of the fire, the front axle and drive shaft disintegrated.

While driving 20 mph rear axle shaft broke. As a result, rear passenger side wheel separated.
Two months ago, a new frame was installed on my 2002 Dodge Durango. On sept. 14, 2003 my daughter was in an accident on interstate 26 coming to my home. She said the car went out of control and she hit the concrete wall and ended up in the side of interstate. The driver side of the axle looks like it broke. The tire has not been found yet which has the studs, hub etc.

A loud howling noise was heard coming from the rear of the vehicle. Took the vehicle to the repair shop where I was told that the rear axle bearings and possibly differential ring and pinion were bad. I was advised by my mechanic to go back to the dealer since this was an original equipment material and workmanship defect obvious by the low (22,000) mileage on the vehicle that looks like the day it came out of the showroom. This vehicle has never been used off-road. I received no satisfaction from the dealer and was told since the vehicle is 9 months out of warranty that I was responsible for repair costs. I strongly disagree. There are several other complaints listed in this section with the same problem I experienced and I've been told by an expert that the rear differential in this vehicle has a serious design defect involving the ring and pinion not being capable of handle the forces imposed by the drivetrain of this vehicle. Repair costs are estimated at $1500 - $2000. Chrysler/Dodge should step forward and admit a design flaw exists. I will fight this in court if I have to. Dodge, you should be ashamed of yourself for not fessing up to this.
Vehicle was experiencing loud noise from the rear differential unit. Taken to dealer for repairs, and dealer replaced differential ring and pinon and rear axle bearing at consumer's cost. Also, dealer noticed that some of the bearings were missing when removed.
When driving at any speed front wheels are shaking due to front wheel bearing which has popped out of place, which could cause the wheel to completely separate from the axle at any given time. This was the third replacement.
All four ball joints have failed. Lowers replaced at 80000 miles and uppers at 100000. Seems excessive. Front axle inner bearings complerte failure which damaged front axle itself and needed replaced. From looking at the many other front suspension complaints lodeged, there appears to be a real problem that should be investigated. Front suspension is a real safety concern.
